Who is Greg Mortenson??
-He was born in Minnesota , December 27 , 1957 and grew up on the slopes of Mt
Kilimanjaro,Tanzania
-American professional speaker,writer,veteran and former mountaineer and is also a
author
-co author of The New Yorks Times Bestsellers, Three Cups Of Tea,which stayed on
the bestseller list for 220 weeks!

Mortenson has written and spoken a lot about the importance of education and
literacy for girls and has also further stated that the education of a girl is the most
important investment all countries can make to create stability,socio economic reform
and decrease infant mortality.
He thinks the global priority of the world is to promote education and literacy for
everyone with an emphasis on educating girls.
4. History of why he decided to change the world
In 1993, Greg Mortenson travelled to the northern pakistan to climb the world’s
second highest mountain.K2 which was also a memorial to his sister Christa.After
spending 70 days on the mountain range,He failed to reach the summit and descended
the mountain to head towards the nearest city.

He then stated that he took a wrong turn and ended up in a small village of Korphe.
He was physically exhausted without energy and was ill. Alone when he reached the
village, He was cared for by the residents there while he was recovering and after he
saw local students studying outside without proper materials. As a guesture of
gratitude for their assistance,he decided to help them build a school there

He co founded the organization the non profit organisation Central Asia Institute
The Main aim of this organisation was to promote education and literacy especially
for girls in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan

The organisation , Central Asia Institute was founded after he experienced frustration
in getting funding for the school he wanted to build in Korphe.He then convinced
computer pioneer Jean Hoerni to fund the building of the school.
He was then invited by Hoerni to serve as the first executive director of the company

The CAI has several programmes to help it carry out its mission to promote education
and literacy.
Such as :
- School building, maintenance, equipment, and supplies,Scholarships
- Teacher support,Public health and Women’s literacy & vocational centers

9. School building, maintenance, equipment, and supplies,Scholarships
-Projects in this category are related to the direct costs of building new schools, updating and/or
maintaining existing schools, and providing necessary materials for the schools. This often includes ongoing
support for uniforms, school equipment, and individual school supplies for students. Each of these projects
includes local people.
-CAI provides scholarships for advanced education.
10. Teacher support,Public health and Women’s literacy & vocational
centers
-CAI funds teacher training in some areas. CAI pays teachers' salaries when support is not provided by the government.
-CAI provides funds for maternal health care , nutrition and hygiene awareness, disaster relief projects, and the installation
of clean water systems. These efforts have included education for the victims of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake. The quake
killed 74,000 people, including 18,000 students, and displaced 2.8 million people. CAI has rebuilt or re-established 16
schools destroyed in the earthquake.
-CAI supports literacy centers, where women of all ages get free lessons in reading, writing, and math, bringing them to
about a 4th grade level of education. These centers also teach hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, and money management. CAI
also supports vocational centers that train women in sewing, weaving, knitting, and provide equipment and materials.
11. Community support and Global outreach
-CAI will occasionally fund small community projects when the community requests them. These projects
include building bridges, establishing museums, providing porter training, among other projects.
-CAI promotes the importance of education and literacy via the organization's website as well as other
social media venues. The organization also publishes an annual magazine, "Journey of Hope," about its
programs and projects. CAI created the Pennies for Peace curriculum to teach students about the
importance of service learning.
12. The Present
As of 2014, CAI reports it has established or significantly supported over
300 projects, including 191 schools, in rural and often volatile regions of
Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.
