1) Carl Montgomery and Dr. Sergio Mendez are researching green composite materials made from hemp or flax fabrics and resin as sustainable alternatives to carbon fiber for reinforcing concrete. 2) They used hand lay-up and vacuum resin infusion processes to fabricate composite panels, which were adhered to concrete beams to test their additional mechanical strength. 3) Preliminary results indicate the green composite panels do increase the strength of concrete beams, and using these materials would be better for the environment than carbon fiber composites.
