El Greco was born in Crete but traveled extensively, including to Venice and Rome before settling in Toledo, Spain where he lived out his life. He developed a distinctive style that emphasized imagination and intuition over proportion. He believed color was the most important element of painting and liked using crude, unmixed colors. The Herrerian architectural style is characterized by geometric rigor and clean volumes without much decoration, as seen in the building that exemplifies it, El Escorial.
