Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378-1455) was an Italian artist and sculptor during the early Renaissance period. He is best known for creating the "Gates of Paradise", the gilded bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery. Ghiberti won a competition in 1401 to design the doors and worked on them for over 20 years, completing them in 1424. Through his doors, Ghiberti helped establish a new realistic and emotional style that influenced other Renaissance artists like Michelangelo and formed the basis for the High Renaissance style. He also trained many important Renaissance artists in his large workshop.
