This document provides an overview of graphic novels and comics. It begins with definitions of comics from Will Eisner and Scott McCloud, and then defines graphic novels as a narrative work conveying a story through comics. It provides a brief history timeline of comics from cave paintings to modern works. It outlines several major comic publishers and notable works. The document discusses reasons for including graphic novels in libraries, such as their educational value, ability to depict real situations, and potential to get more people reading. It concludes with recommendations for starting and displaying a graphic novel collection in a library.
This is a slide show from a March 2010 presentation, "An Introduction to the Graphic Novel." The presentation covered the definition of a graphic novel, how to read a graphic novel, the history of graphic novels, and suggested further readings. It was published by B-Sides (http://ir.uiowa.edu/bsides/11/) however the file seems to have been lost there.
With the proliferation of series books for children and young adults today it might come as a surprise to many librarians that for many years series books occupied a dark corner of librarianship--the books were deemed unacceptable forms of reading material and were often ignored for purchase despite their popularity with young readers. In this webinar, you will be introduced to the history of series books as a format and then learn specifically why these books are not only important to the history of youth literature but to American history and pop culture as well. Speaker: Lindsey Tomsu, Teen Coordinator, La Vista Public Library.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

12. Comics get people reading
• At the end of the day that is what counts.
Comics encourage people who wouldn’t
normally read, to pick up a book.
• Therefore, stocking a selection of Graphic
Novels adds greatly to the number of people
taking out library materials. In fact, Graphic
Novels have some of the highest issues in
many collections.
13. How to use Graphic Novels
• Start a GN reading group.
• Introduce reluctant readers to the Classics
(Classical Comics, Classics Illustrated & Self
Made Hero Press).
• Attract more young readers to your library –
get them to suggest stock items.

16. Dalen
Dalen primarily publishes Welsh adaptations of works previously developed
and published in other languages. In particular, they specialise in
adaptations of comic strips and graphic novels.
•
Every good cartoon strip needs three equal constituents:
a good story
good writing
good illustration
All of Dalen’s books exceed these benchmarks in an attractive reading
medium for pupils whose first language is Welsh, who are learning Welsh
as a second language, for students of modern languages, as well as
students of art and design.

18. Starting & Displaying a Collection
• If in doubt seek advice from local professionals
(dealers, readers or publishers)
• Be aware of age appropriate materials
• Start with superheroes & mainstream titles
before looking at esoteric titles
• Display face on if possible
• Shelve related titles together
• Keep adult & teen collections separate from
children’s collections
