Kinder- und Hausmärchen) is a collection of
fairy tales published in 1812 by Jacob and
Wilhelm Grimm; the collection is commonly
known today as Grimm's Fairy TalesGrimm's Fairy Tales

•Jacob and Wilhelm published their first book of
fairy tales – “Children’s and Household Tales” - in
1812. There were 86 folktales.
•In the next volume of “Grimm’s Fairy Tales”, the brothers added 70 more
stories. It went on growing like this for six more editions. Finally, the book
contained 211 stories.
•The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were
called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children.
•Both brothers argued that folktales should be
recorded and presented in print in a form as close as
possible to the original mode. In practice they
modified folktales in varying ways.
Ex. In "The Snow White" the violence was removed by
later editions: in the end of the story the wicked
Queen is forced to put on red-hot iron slippers and
dance till she dies.
•The first volumes were much criticized because, although they were
called "Children's Tales", they were not regarded as suitable for children.
•Both brothers argued that folktales should be
recorded and presented in print in a form as close as
possible to the original mode. In practice they
modified folktales in varying ways.
Ex. In "The Snow White" the violence was removed by
later editions: in the end of the story the wicked
Queen is forced to put on red-hot iron slippers and
dance till she dies.
