This talk was for a social group exploring how to make a more systematic method to make strategy to drive social change - with inspiration from the business and military world, in addition to the social impact world.
Team Hughes and Dann argue that negative political advertising is damaging and driving voter cynicism. They propose that politics should be marketed more positively, like soap, to appeal to voters' emotions and clean up disillusionment. Data from positive political ads showed high audience interest and positive emotions like happiness and compassion. The future of politics requires selling positive policies and reinforcing benefits to cut through with optimism and build trust in candidates. Hughes and Dann advocate collaboration on measuring ad emotions and analyzing candidates' social media to advance positive political communication.
4 other ways to influence the governmentdumouchelle
There are several ways for citizens and groups to influence government besides voting: contacting elected officials, joining like-minded groups, forming pressure/interest groups, using lobbyists and the courts, protests, civil disobedience, and influencing the media. Pressure groups specifically try to influence policy changes, and can include non-profits like Greenpeace or Amnesty International. Effective tactics include lobbying politicians, litigation, demonstrations, and generating media attention for their cause. However, well-funded groups can have disproportionate influence.
This document provides guidance on developing an effective campaign strategy. It discusses that campaigning is about challenging the status quo and changing power dynamics to make what was previously impossible now possible. An effective strategy identifies clear goals and objectives, maps the landscape of supporters, opponents and those who can be influenced, and determines the appropriate tactics to mobilize different audiences to achieve objectives and work toward the overall goal or vision. Key elements of strategic capacity include developing motivation around an issue people deeply care about, generating and applying salient knowledge through ongoing learning and analysis, and leveraging creative processes to devise and refine strategies.
A proposed financial solution to the problem of girl-child hawking in Nigeriarufaidabo
This document proposes a financial solution to address the problem of girl-child hawking in Nigeria. It defines girl-child hawking as children under 18 engaging in street vending and highlights that an estimated 20,000 girls in northern Nigeria participate. The causes include poverty, religious practices, and trafficking, while the effects are prostitution, health issues, and lack of education. It argues that stakeholders should help address the human rights violations, poverty, and health impacts. However, obstacles to solving the problem include widespread poverty, lack of funding, and inadequate policies and enforcement. Potential solutions proposed include raising funds, implementing child protection laws, poverty programs, and awareness campaigns.
This document outlines the agenda for a class on government policy, protests, and civic participation. It includes: discussing turning off cell phones and taking attendance; petitions and protests; lobbying and political parties; and an assignment to reflect on what policy one would be willing to protest to the point of going to jail. It then discusses the constitutionally protected rights to dissent and petition, examples of successful protest movements, and the roles and impacts of lobbying and the two-party system in the US.

Importance
The Internet is a globe that involves virtually all levels of the political communications,
now a days.
Social media has caused major changes in the political communication and has become
useful resource often used by the politicians in order to strengthen their visibility.
In Pune Municipal corporation election social media is the biggest technique and game changer in terms of cast more vote, candidates data, daily work done by candidates and campaigns during
election.
All the new media resources viz., the websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus , YouTube, Pinterest and etc…of the politicians or the political parties allow the declaration of a informal
identity in form of daily works, rallies and contribution to the society.
Online Surveys, questionnaire on different media website, mobile apps and social pages are more approachable than newspaper reading and mouth whispering.

Self-Training Jobs & Interfaces that Teach - Whitehouse Maker to Manufacturer...Nick Pinkston
The idea here is that the economy is becoming more and more complex over time, and that means we need to change the way we think about education because curricula become outdated too quickly.
My answers to this are: training self-learners, new forms of on-the-job training, workplace / workstation interfaces that teach you how to use them. The full implementation of this would be called a "self-training job".
I gave this presentation at the Whitehouse on June 20, 2016.
Make: Society @ The Red Vic - Embassy NetworkNick Pinkston
In this talk, I discuss that social implications of the Maker Movement. I cover the future of Education & Manufacturing and its ability to influence society.

Cities for Making, Making for Cities - MakerFaire 2015Nick Pinkston
The document discusses how cities can embrace making and manufacturing through desktop makerspaces, job shops, and mass production. It outlines the different types of parts that can be made from off-the-shelf to custom and how scales of manufacturing from desktop to mass production can be applied. Specific examples discussed include Shenzhen's electronics market, tiny houses, prefabricated mass housing, automated construction, and how society can adapt through constant training and specialization.
Manufacturing the Future - MakerCon - May 13, 2015Nick Pinkston
This document discusses an exciting time for hardware engineering and manufacturing. It introduces Nick Pinkston, founder and CEO of Plethora, which aims to provide engineering superpowers through rapid and flexible manufacturing with real-time feedback, automated setup, and quality control to turn CAD designs into parts within one day. The document promotes Plethora being live now and offers free parts.
Narratives are often used to manipulate others and are not always accurate representations of complex systems and knowledge. Books are becoming outdated and irrelevant as a learning tool due to their linear format and slow production process. New forms of media like decks and hypertext along with improved user interfaces are better suited for learning because they allow information to be presented in an easy and non-linear fashion without narratives that oversimplify complex topics.
Manufacturing the Future - MakerCon 2014Nick Pinkston
My talk from MakerCon 2014. The idea is how to look at manufacturing from a "base principles" approach. The idea is that if you want to see how manufacturing works in the future - you need to look at the physics and economics of the matter / energy / information that makes up products.
Plethora's Talk for the 2013 NY Hardware Innovation WorkshopNick Pinkston
Went over Plethora's take on where design / manufacturing are going by using the software analogies and bringing them into the hardware world.
Here's the talk: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/38936643/highlight/453065
IDEO Show-n-Tell about Plethora, Hardware and the Future of ManufacturingNick Pinkston
Nick Pinkston gave a presentation at IDEO on August 22, 2013 about hardware engineering and manufacturing. Some of the key points from the presentation include that prototyping has become easier with tools available, but manufacturing processes have not changed much in 100 years. The presentation discussed how engineering disciplines could benefit from adopting aspects of software development practices. Pinkston also covered topics like making CAD programs function more like integrated development environments, challenges with democratizing technologies, and the potential of hybrid manufacturing approaches.
The Future of Making Hardware - Ignite FooCamp 2013Nick Pinkston
The document discusses the future of hardware making and prototyping. Prototyping has been solved through 3D printing and other technologies, but manufacturing has not changed in over 100 years. The author argues that development environments need to integrate CAD tools and part libraries similar to integrated development environments for software. This would allow engineers to more easily design, validate, quote, and share their hardware designs. The author believes automating manufacturing processes through hybrid vertical integration of hardware and software could help democratize access to making hardware and picking all three of "good, fast, and cheap" rather than just two.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
