Determine what makes up the blood
Explain the functions of the different
components of blood
Explain the importance of blood
clotting
Let’s Do This
First
For a minute, count your pulse rate.
Now do these:
• Jog in place (16 seconds)
• Jumping jacks (16 seconds)
Again, count your pulse rate in
one minute.
slidesppt.net
Compare your pulse rate before
and after doing the exercises.
What happened?
At rest
Normal pulse rate
During & After exercise
Faster pulse rate
because heart is
pumping harder.
Why does our heart pump?
- Our heart pumps blood
- It sends blood to the
different parts of the
body
ARE THERE
ANY OTHER
ORGANS
INVOLVED?
- What are those?
- Since it has more than one organ
involved, what is this system
called?
Are there any other organs involved in
the transportation of blood?
Yes
Since there are more organs involved,
then it is already a system. What is this
system called?
Circulatory System or Cardiovascular
System
What is its function?
It is responsible for transporting
(circulating) blood all over the body.
What are the other organs in the system?
● Blood
● Blood
Vessels
● Heart
BLOOD
- Is considered an organ
Red blood Cells
- Because it is made of cells and essential fluids that sustain life
- It carries water, blood cells, nutrients, gases, and by-products of the
cells inside our body
- It is made up of the following:
White blood Cells
Platelets
Plasma
RED BLOOD CELLS or Erythrocytes
- disc-shaped cells that are biconcave in the center
Diffusion – the movement of
molecules from a higher
concentration to a lower
concentration
- Its main function is to carry gases oxygen and carbon dioxide
- The red color of the RBCs comes from the protein called hemoglobin
- It’s shape allows better oxygen diffusion while its flexibility enables
squeezing through even in tiny blood vessels
RED BLOOD CELLS or Erythrocytes
- Are made in the bone marrow of the flat bones like the sternum and long bones like the
humerus
- They are short-lived cells; they only live for about 120 days
- They are destroyed in the spleen or the liver
https://www.britannica.com/science/red-blood-cell
WHITE BLOOD CELLS or Leukocytes
- Also called soldiers of the human blood
- They protect the body from foreign bodies such as viruses,
bacteria, and fungi
- They are lesser in number compared to RBCs
PLATELETS or Thrombocytes
- Are tiny components of our blood that help with clotting
- Are our body’s natural bandage to stop bleeding
Clotting – a process that prevents excessive bleeding
when a blood vessel is injured
PLASMA
- Makes up to 55% of the blood.
- The yellowish liquid that contains water, salts and ions, and
enzymes
- Carries the nutrients, hormones, proteins, and water that the body
needs
- By-products and wastes of the cell also get dumped into the
plasma for disposal.
Blood transfusion is not a new
life-saving procedure. It has
been around for centuries. Using
online resources and other
books, explain how blood
transfusion was done centuries
back.
