This document provides guidance for student teachers in their music lessons, including developing a basic lesson plan structure with warm ups, reviewing past material, introducing new concepts, incorporating fun elements, and assigning practice. It recommends determining students' abilities, acquiring necessary materials, taking the lead while encouraging students and providing clear explanations. Student teachers are advised to schedule lessons, use classroom spaces when possible, and seek help from captains, instrumental teachers, or the document authors if needed.

2. Where to begin?
Preliminary assessment…
Can they make a sound on the instrument?
If so, what range of notes are they able to play?
Can they read music?

3. What materials will you
need?
Beginner books/note charts etc
PLAN your sessions - what do you want to achieve
each lesson?

4. In Lessons…
Take the lead, ask questions, and don’t be shy
Play with them - show them how it’s supposed to sound
Encouragement and praise at every stage
Overcome the weirdness
Repetition and variety
Be clear in your explanations - think about how you want to
explain something

5. A basic lesson plan…

practised)

Set practice

6. Rooms and times…
Use a normal classroom where possible
Schedule your lesson with your teacher and make
sure you BOTH put them in your planners - DO NOT
MISS A LESSON YOU HAVE SCHEDULED
After school practice room timetables will be posted
up outside the office. Priority to pianists, drummers,
and singers (in that order).
