Chapter 1: Structure and Function of Organisms
Lesson 10: The Importance of Bacteria p. 68
Objective:
- Explain the importance of bacteria in
the human digestive system.
6. @ASG 2023-2024 6
What are bacteria?
Bacteria are tiny organisms that we cannot see.
We need a microscope to see them, this is why we say that they are MICROSCOPIC.
7. @ASG 2023-2024 7
Where can we find bacteria?
Everywhere!
In the air, on objects, in food and water, and even in our bodies.
8. @ASG 2023-2024 8
Are all bacteria harmful?
NO!
Some are harmful and some are useful.
9. @ASG 2023-2024 9
What do harmful bacteria do?
They can cause diseases/ illnesses like sore throats and stomach problems.
10. @ASG 2023-2024
10
What about bacteria that are HARMLESS?
They help keep nutrients
in soil to grow foods.
They can cause disease to animals and plants, but do not harm humans.
Other bacteria can be used
to make food such as yogurt.
Some bacteria even live in our
bodies, and help with digestion.
11. @ASG 2023-2024 11
Where do bacteria that help with digestion live?
They are found in the small intestine and large intestine.
There are more than 300 different kinds of bacteria in our digestive system.
12. @ASG 2023-2024
12
What do we call a group of bacteria and other small
organisms that we have in our bodies?
13. @ASG 2023-2024 13
How does our microbiome help us?
- It breaks down carbohydrates and fiber in food so our body can use them.
- It keeps harmful bacteria and diseases out of our bodies.
15. @ASG 2023-2024 15
Answers Let’s Think p. 70:
- Bacteria are found in
the small and large
intestine.
- They make up part of
the microbiome.
-The microbiome helps
us break down nutrients
and keep harmful
bacteria out of the body
