2. Defining Food Science:
– What does “science” mean? What are some
examples of science?
– What do you think the term “food science”
means?

3. Defining Food Science:
– Food science is, simply put, the science behind
food! This can mean anything from molecules and
chemical reactions that occur when we pair
different foods together, to how bacteria and
mold can grow on food and affect us when we
leave food too long!
– Today we’ll begin with the basics: Food Science
safety.

4. What is Food Science Safety? The
first rule of food safety is

Hands
But of course you are all are pros at that by now.
Who can tell me why we all need to wash our
hands? When do we wash them? Can you ever
wash the too much?

5. Bacteria in Foods that are Good for You
–We know that when we mention the
word “bacteria, “ it’s usually referred to
something that is bad for you, right?
–What would you guys think if I told you
that there is bacteria that’s actually
good for you?

6. Bacteria in Foods that are Good for
You
– Well, believe it or not, there are certain
bacteria that certain foods have that are
actually great for your health if you eat them
moderately and in good portions.
– What do you think are some foods that have
bacteria that is good for you?

7. An example of a food that
contains Good bacteria is yogurt:
How many of you here like yogurt? How many of
you eat it often?

8. An example of a food that contains
Good bacteria is yogurt:
Yogurt is one of the most popular foods to eat that
has good bacteria in it. These bacteria are called
lactobacillus, bifidus, and acidophilius. (write these
for children to see) practice saying these words.
These bacteria help you break down and digest your
food better and can boost your immune system so
that you fight off germs better and get sick less.

Good bacteria is yogurt:
Yogurt can also help your bones get
stronger, easing arthritis, lowering
cholesterol, and improving bad breath!

10. Today we are going to make a healthy
recipe using yogurt-our bacteria friendly
food!
