- Data life cycle
- Journalists are some of the best local government data liberators around. In their investigative research and watchdog capacities, they go through great lengths to wrangle data from government agencies, clean it, visualize it, and get it into the public sphere. Once their story is published, what happens to all that data? It might be on the newsrooms’ servers, on GitHub, or even on CDs in someone’s office. These approaches do not address long-term access or preservation of the data, much less use of the data in other ways such as historical context or aggregating for greater public policy impact. Local government data that journalists, researchers, and even government agencies collect and publish are ephemeral and at risk of being lost, forever.
- The success of the archiving endeavor, however, ultimately depends on researchers’ willingness to deposit their data and documentation for others to use.
- How do we leverage the solutions that already exist? My sense is that this is what this Hyddra - in-the- box extend the existing Hydra project codebase and its vibrant and growing community to build, bundle, and promote a feature-rich, robust, flexible digital repository that is easy to install, configure, and maintain.
