Driverless cars are being developed by Google through a project called Google Chauffeur. The technology was pioneered by Stanford professor Sebastian Thrun in 2005 when his robotic vehicle Stanley won the DARPA Grand Challenge. Nevada was the first state to pass a law allowing driverless cars in 2011. Google has now logged over 300,000 accident-free miles with its driverless car prototypes. While the technology is still being tested, it aims to eventually make commercial autonomous vehicles available.
