Suxamethonium has been used in clinical anesthesia for decades despite many issues and attempts to replace it. It provides rapid onset and recovery of muscle paralysis enabling quick tracheal intubation. With the development of sugammadex, which can rapidly reverse the effects of the non-depolarizing muscle relaxant rocuronium, suxamethonium may finally be replaced as its key advantages can now be achieved through other means. Suxamethonium taught the field about neuromuscular pharmacology through its many side effects experienced over its long clinical use in billions of patients.
