2. Deaths In Hot Cars Nearly Triple Summary
In the article Deaths in Hot Cars Nearly Triple, Steve Visser claims that the number of children
who have died due to being left in hot car is quickly increasing in this year. There have been a lot
of suggestions from experts about how to prevent these accidents, but a lot of similar cases still
continue to happen. The claim of the article is explicit because it clearly and directly shows the
topic which is the increase of hot car deaths, the explanations, and the recommendations for the
problem. The author gives some interview results to support his claim. For example, according to
Amy Artuso, program manager for the council, there were 11 death cases in this year compared to
4 cases at the same time last year. Despite the fact that many parents... Show more content on

The death case in East Baton Rouge is an illustration of this point. The father who is a baseball
coach left his eight month old daughter in the car instead of dropping her off at day care.
WBRZ reported that the temperatures in Baton Rouge could reach 110 degrees in 10 minutes
and 120 degrees in 20 minutes. This caused the baby died of hyperthermia and elevated body
temperature. Her father then was arrested and charged with negligent homicide because he was
too careless in taking care of his daughter. This reminds people of a similar case in Atlanta two
years ago. Twenty two month old Cooper Harris died after being left in the sweltering back seat of
a car in June 2014 while his father, Justin Ross Harris, was at work. What seemed like a tragic
accident took a shocking turn when, three months later, a Georgia grand jury indicted Harris on
charges of murder. Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide, said The Harris case

3. The Aeneid By Virgil, The Oresteia, And Sappho By Sappho
Rationality affects the way we behave, but emotions change our behavior and drive us to behave
the way we do. People are driven by emotions, yet we can not allow them to be the only thing that
controls our actions and behaviors. Rationality helps control our emotions and prevents them from
getting too out of hand. There are three texts from seminar that demonstrate this idea of emotional
power: The Aeneidby Virgil, The Oresteia by Aeschylus, and Sappho by Sappho. In The Aeneid,
the text discusses Aeneas journey to Italy and the many encounters he had. It was in this text that
the females displayed emotional power. The Oresteia is a play about murder, revenge, and justice
within the royal family of Argos. Emotionis what drives this play... Show more content on

Rational, only in appearance, Dido tells her sister, Anna, to go build her a pyre in secret, deep
inside our courtyard under the open sky to obliterate every trace of the man (144; lines 618,
623). Anna does as her sister tells her to and is deceived by what the pyre was really meant for.
Dido attempts to rid herself of her emotions by burning every trace of Aeneas, yet her emotions
eventually take over. With her heart torn apart, Dido commits suicide. Dido s sister on the other
hand is hurt but still emotionally stable. Anna is stunned, grieving, and hurt by the actions of her
sister. She states, how very cruel... You have destroyed your life, my sister, mine too (151; lines
847, 848). Despite playing a part in her sister s death, Anna remains levelheaded and requests help
to bathe [Dido s] wounds in water and hopes that if a lingering breath still hovers that she should
catch it on [her] lips (151; lines 851, 852). Similar to The Aeneid, The Oresteia also demonstrates
characters caving into their emotions. Clytemnestra, the Queen of Argos, lacks the power to
prevent her daughter being used as a sacrificial lamb to the gods. The misery she felt when her
husband, Agamemnon, sacrificed their daughter was immense. So immense that it led her to
murder, for she thought that

4. The Eighth Amendment and Death Penalty Essay
The Eight Amendment to the U.S. Constitution Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive
fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted , proposed on 9/25/1789 and approved
on 12/15/1791. The cruel and unusual punishment confines the harshness of penalties that state and
federal governments may inflict upon ones who have been condemned of a criminal offense. The
excessive fines phrase restricts the amount that state and federal governments may possibly fine an
individual for a specific offense. The excessive bail phrase limits legal judgment in setting bail for
the discharge of persons indicted of an illegal action during the time following their capture but
prior to their trial. Mount, Steve, The Bill of Rights... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Contrary to popular belief deployments are a common occurrence in the United States Air

times to the Middle East, and they all begin the same way. First comes the unfounded rumors of
the next place our unit is being deployed. Next is the announcement of the teams. This is a
pivotal moment since you learn the identity of your fellow team members you ll be stuck with

Reflections on Class Discussions Reflecting back on previous class discussions has brought my
focus on the effect that Disney World has contributed to the homelessness. The world is one
great big fantasy once you enter into the Magic Kingdom. Everyone is happy and there are
smiles, dancing and laughter in all directions. Perhaps we should look on the outside of the
Magic Kingdom where the world and the people are real; real just like you and me. The
discussions were quite interesting as we shared the misconceptions many had on how Disney
World would bring major changes to the economy. There would be jobs, jobs, jobs. However, to
our realization those hopes and dreams were quickly diminished and people were coming to
recognize that the stars they were seeing were just magical that quickly disappeared. What was
to be the happiest place on earth was slowing becoming a drawing card for the people hoping to
make a new start in their lives. A place where jobs would be available and their families could
have a better upgraded standard of living. But it seems that everyone in the class agreed that this
did not happen. We all agreed that many obstacles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My Reading Response There is a famous saying Every time you open a book, you learn
something . Nevertheless, I had never imagined that reading could be fun, meaningful, and
creative. The more I read, and the more I was attached to the books. After I discovered a few of
the readings, I realized how the authors wanted to introduce their ideas without telling the story
directly. This is fairly new to me. In my earlier English classes that I had studied at the City
College of San Francisco, I read mostly textbooks and non fictionreadings. In this English 1B class,
I started reading the poem and fiction materials and they are much harder to understand.

For my first thought, I assumed white elephant should be connected as a precious gift or something
that is rare to obtain. I was surprised that the author used this term as a different meaning. It still
contained the ingredient of precious gift , however, he twisted to unwanted precious gift. After I
read this story about two times, I was happy that I was able to visualize the scene of this story and
I believed the conversations had helped me the most. I had also found some similarity and
connections between this story compared to the others.
Comparably, The Road Not Taken , by Robert Frost, also enclosed the mystery behind the
reading. Nevertheless, this reading was totally different than the Hills Like White Elephants . In
my opinion, poem is not something that everyone can easily handle and it s meant to be
metaphorical. Everyone can use the expression unlike than the others. As a result, it will become
with different meaning. Here s the example that I found in The Road Not Taken , and it clearly
provided me the two different meanings in sentences, although the words are the same, such as,
Some dirty dog stole my wallet at the party (Frost) and You can t teach an old dog new tricks.

very similar. Therefore, it requires effort and time to understand the meaning. On the same note, a

8. St. Thomas Aquinas s Ten Elements Of Human Law
St. Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican monk who wrote on many aspects of law writings. This
paper will ultimately discuss St. Thomas Aquinas s ten elements of human law, and how
humans have consciously came together to bind different variations of eternal and natural law
to create now our human laws. Aquinas s focuses mostly on the natural laws and in the laws
which derived from the eternal laws that were ultimately produced by God. He also focuses on
understanding God and all the relationships between him and his creations. Aquinas describes
the law as a dictate of reason from head ruler of a particular community, equally to God who is
the ruler of his people which in turn created eternal laws to control the masses. This dictate of
reasons is created and put into place by the head of that particular community and are created
according to the reasoning of that particular head ruler. Each law is created is according to what
the head ruler thinks is best for his community. However, some of the rules that he set into place
result to non functionality of the community and can cause some friction. However, all this can be
changed with laws adapting to the request of particular ideology in a community. Aquinas also
says that God has an idea on how he governs the earth. He governs using eternal law and uses his
intellect to make the earth a better place for his creation (Dimock, 10). Hence, this is where begin
to notice the mergence of natural law. Aquinas says that the law is not only

15. Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephant By Ernest Hemingway
A symbol is anything that stands for, or represents, something else. Many everyday objects we see
symbolize or stand for something deeper; our wedding rings represent love and commitment, teams
like the Sharks or Giants are named after animals and mythical creatures that symbolize strength,
power, and stability. Similarly, in literature, symbols are used to give an object, character, or
situation a deeper and more significant meaning. In literature, symbols can be ambiguous and
difficult to understand because the same symbolcan have different meanings; therefore, it is very
important to know when and where to use symbolism in a story. For example, the color red can
mean love, anger or danger depending on the context of the text.

Underachievement in schools can be heavily linked to factors that are internalised within the
school. Both internal and external factors can contribute to the underachievement of pupils who
belong to a working class background, and they may be equally as effectual on the
underachievement of the pupil.
One of the major causes of underachievement is the lack of economic capital, proposed by Pierre
Bourdieu (1984), that a working class family possess. As item A states, sociologists claim that
factors outside the school, such as parental attitudes and parental income, are the main causes of
working class underachievement. Children who belong to a working class background may not be

This is due to the elaborated code being used by teachers, as well as questions and textbooks being
written with more complex vocabulary. As well as this, Bernstein said that the elaborated code is a
more effective tool for analysing and reasoning and for expressing thoughts clearly and effectively,
which are all essential in achieving highly during education. This, ultimately leads to higher
achievement for middle class children cause they are comfortable with more complex language,
and therefore have the necessary understanding to achieve highly. Comparatively, working class
children struggle to understand the elaborated code, because they simply haven t been brought up
in a household where this type of speech is used frequently. This leads to underachievement
amongst the working class. Due to the use of the restricted code, these pupils may be labelled by
teachers as less able and therefore streamed into lower sets, leading to a self fulfilling prophecy.
These lower sets may consist if pupils who belong to an anti school subculture, which can disrupt
the learning of fellow pupils, thus leading to a higher chance of underachievement.
Thirdly, parenting style is also a hugely contributing factor for underachievement. As item A states,
factors outside the school, such as parental attitudes and parental income, are the main causes of
working class underachievement. Educated parents emphasise consistent

1. During the 1980s, the air express industry was a medium to attractive industry to already be a
major player in, but not a very attractive industry to try and break into. The industry can be
characterized by high rivalry from competitors who compete on the same services with very little
differentiation, medium power from suppliers who supply the resources necessary to run the

Thus, threat of substitutes is low because air express still dominated the shipping scene and
electronic transmission was not yet perfected. Threat of entry is low because it requires large
capital investments for a firm to startup and thus it can impede the entry of new firms into the
industry. Lastly, it would be hard to break into the industry because the other firms already have
economies to scale, are further along learning curve, and may have certain airspace leases that

Therefore this industry is a pretty good one to already be in, but would be very tough to try and
break into. Since established firms do not have to worry about threat of entrants or substitution,
they can focus on making their core business practices cost efficient and profitable. Although
firms have to deal with high buyer and supplier power, every firm has to deal with these issues.
Therefore this leaves only rivalry to compete on, which forces firms to stay sharp, observe the
competition, and provide excellent service to the firm s customers to generate profit. Industry
competition intensified from 1988 to 1989 because there was a significant slowdown of the growth

22. The American Political System Is Built On A Foundation Of...
The American political system is built on a foundation of checks and balances, yet there is one
branch which has somehow evaded this practice. The federal court system is defined by Article III
of the Constitution, it represents one of three of the most powerful hands in the federal
government. Unfortunately, the article which outlines its functions and limitations is extremely
vague in nature. As stated in Article II, Section 2, Clause 2, the President holds the authority to
appoint a federal judge, should there be a position open. Furthermore, the Constitution states that
The judges, both of the supreme and inferior courts, shall hold their offices during good behavior,
and shall, at stated times, receive for their services, a compensation, which shall not be diminished
during their continuance in office. The usage of the phrase, during good behavior is indicative of
a lifelong tenure. In the younger years of the constitution, when the average lifespan was 35 to 50
years old, long tenures were not an imminent threat to democracy, nor was it reasonable for the
founding fathers to foresee the development of such an issue. For this reason, the founding fathers
only outlined three ways in which a Federal judge could constitutionally be replaced, including;
death, voluntary retirement, and impeachment. However, when the position of SCOTUS was
newly formed, the average tenure of a judge was 7.5 years, unfortunately now it is closer to 26.1
years. (Calabresi 2006) Alexander

23. Essay On Gelato
Gelato has an interesting history and originally dates back to frozen treats and desserts of Sicily
in Italy, Egypt, and even ancient Rome; in which it was produced from the ice and snow of
mountaintops before being brought down and preserved below ground level to keep it cold.
Gelato soon became popular among a large portion of the population of Italian cities, one in
particular was Florence. Nevertheless, its popularity only began to increase between the 1920s and
1930s before the first gelatocart was developed in the city of Varese.
1. Gelato was produced back in the 16th century
That s right, gelato dates as far back as to the 16th century. However there has always been a
minor amount of confusion as to where gelato first originated from and who really invented it.
Typically credit has always been handed to a man native to Florence, called Bernardo Buontalenti;
who supposedly delighted the court of Catherina dei Medici with the tasty frozen dessert.
Nevertheless, Italians have always been credited with introducing gelato to America and also the
rest of Europe.

healthier than traditional American style ice cream, this is due to all the natural ingredients it

24. New Born Infants And Visual Acuity
New born infants have poor visual acuity as opposed to adults. Visual acuity measures to what
extent an individual can detect visual detail. Their lack of visual acuity means they see the world
a more ill defined manner. Adult visual acuity is thirty times the visual acuity of a new born (Van
Hof van Duin Mohn 1985). Atkinson Bradrick (1981), supported this and found that new born
infants could only detect the separation of lines if they are 30 times wider than the minimum width
adults can detect. There is at least a five fold improvement by 6 months of age in acuity, though it
takes several years for it to reach adult level, Brown Yamamoto 1986. New born infants also have
poor visual accommodation, needed to make sharp retinal images at different distances. Although
infantperceptiondiffers in terms of acuity, infant perception on size and shape constancy requires
less development. Adults understand that objects have a constant shape and size, regardless of their
distance, and the angle of perception. The developmental question lies on whether size and shape
principles guide infant perception, or whether constancies are developed through experience. This
argument is one of many in exploring whether infants learn through cognitive adaptations, or
whether they learn through experience and what the environment offers them. Previous
assumptions by Piaget, state that these principles were not present at birth, but developed towards
the end of the first year. This

The output is based on a function, usually a step function or sigmoid function (basically a
rounded or differentiable step function). The neuron should output a 0 until it fires when it
should output a 1. This allows it to be used as a logic function. For this case the neuron should
fire for only one letter/character (and an interfered equivalent) and for all other possible cases it
should not fire. The strength of a neural network is that it can learn or be taught a pattern and
recognise this pattern. From this it should be able to make decisions for cases it has not seen
before. There are many methods for teaching a neuron, most relying on derivation to find the
slope of the so called weight space (some rely on brute force, but these are seldom used). The
basic Gradient Decent rule acts on the slope of the weight space and will be used for this report.
Method Teaching The code was written in m code and implemented by MathWorks Matlab
R2011a. The artificial neuron is taught by manipulating the values of the elements in the weight
matrix (W in the code) until the error in the output matrix (from the dot product of the teaching
set (X) and W) is lower than a set number (0.005). This is achieved with a while loop. Within the
while loop is another while loop which loops another error checking loop though each of the
vectors of the X matrix. The code edits each of the elements of the W matrix by using the equation:

30. Canterbury Tales Masculinity Analysis
In this paper, I will explore various discourses that shaped the understanding of male gender in
medieval England and the notion of masculinity in Canterbury Tales.
The medieval concept of maleness was heavily influenced by the writings of the classical period.
The physiological and other medical theories that constituted this concept were not restricted to the
domain of medicine. They were supported by the religious doctrines. All of these rhetorics were
based on a common assumption that men are physically, morally, and intellectually superior to
women. A key component that defined maleness was virility. Men were charged with the duty of
taking care of women s health by regularly performing sexual intercourse so that their uterus did not
dry up and she remained fertile. So important was this trait to the idea of masculinity that it was
considered as a valid reason for divorce. This caused a woman s chastity to be inextricably linked
with her husband s honor. Adulterous behavior on the wife s part was considered to be a sign of
weakness in a man. A disobedient daughter also tainted a father s honor and diminished his
masculinity. A consequence of this was that a woman s body became a site of sexual violence to
avenge one s honor. The Reeve s Tale presents an instance of this, where two Cambridge
undergraduates are determined to teach the dishonest miller a lesson and achieve their motive by
sleeping with his daughter and wife. Another parameter on which manhood was judged was the sex
of the child he engendered. In his writings, Aristotle had claimed that male semen was the source of
life. This belief was reinforced by the medieval physicians. If a man begot a male heir, his
masculinity was bolstered. These discourses resulted in a strict division between the two sexes.
While women could transgress this code of conduct without severe repercussions, men were
forbidden from exhibiting any feminine behavior. Many instances of cross dressing among women
have been found both in literature and reality; however such impersonation was not permitted for
men.
The definition of masculinity has been broadly divided into: heroic, Christian, courtly, and
intellectual. The varying definitions of masculinity often gave rise

A lot of the time, children and young people will resolve issues themselves without the
intervention of an adult. The key is to observe and know when to step in. You need to remain
neutral and allow each person to explain what happened in their own words and without being
interrupted. Listening is vital in managing disagreements successfully and the volume/tone of
voices should be kept to an acceptable level. Assertive discussion/negotiation is required from
you to ensure both children are happy with the outcome. If a child becomes overwhelmed by
emotions they may act in an inappropriate manner displaying rage or frustration. This is known as
an emotional outburst. In this case a child should be removed from the situation and taken into a
quiet and accepting environment where they have time to calm down. You should speak to the
child in a reassuring manner and ask them to explain what has happened. If they are unable to do
so then simply talk about what upset them suggesting what they could do in future if they
experience similar feelings. Conflicts with adults are more complex as they could involve
children, parents or staff. That said, many of the principles for managing these disagreements

represent the foundation of a continuously improving organization. It is the application to improve
all the processes within an organization and exceed customer needs issues of customer satisfaction
and guidance on implementing the marketing concept.
Total quality management deals completely with the quality word. It focuses on the quality of
products, quality of services, quality of management of staff, quality of services deliver to patrons
and so on. So the question is arising what is quality? In general terms quality relates to the feature

Attempts to implement TQM regularly fail because top management does not lead and get
committed instead it delegates and pays edge service. Commitment and personal involvement is
required from top management in creating and deploying clear quality values and goals consistent
with the objectives of the organization, and in creating and deploying definite systems, methods
and performance measures for achieving those goals. These systems and methods guide all quality
activities and encourage participation by all employees.
Continuous improvement
Continuous improvement of all activities is at the heart of TQM. it is recognized that customer
satisfaction can only be obtained by providing a high quality product, continuous improvement of
the quality of the product. It is seen as the only way to maintain a high level of customer
satisfaction. As well as recognizing the connection between product quality and customer
satisfaction, TQM also recognizes that product quality is the result of process quality. As a result,
there is a focus on continuous improvement of the organization s processes.

hopes of reaching women struggling with body image issues. Dove s campaign began as a way to

love. In the cultural background of unexpressed lovewhere food becomes the channel of the
message, food in turn becomes a sensitive topic and therefore can serve as a catalyst for arguments
in relationships between people of that culture. In a case study observing a couple of Korean cultural
background Peter and Elli I attempt to uncover the metamessages underlying their arguments
involving food. In Korean culture, along with many other Asian cultures, people typically do not
show love and affection straightforwardly through touch or words. Instead, we show it more subtly
through different channels, the most common of these being food. This cultural experience is
precisely illustrated in a video titled What Asian Parents Don t Say... by Wong Fu Productions a
YouTube channel by Asian American
creators producing Asian American stories in which they
juxtapose scenes of what an Asian parent says, and what they actually mean by what they said.
At one point in the video, an Asian mother asks her son, Did you eat yet? which gets translated
to I love you, but I don t want to say that, so I m making sure you re well fed. That s how my
parents said I love you to me... And it s less awkward. With the comments section flooded with
statements of identical incidents upon the video s release, there is evidence of wide cultural
experience. I personally have felt this too as I have never heard the words I love you from my
parents, and I have never said those words to them either. Yet, we know we love each other; we
just show it through more subtle ways, such as doing errands and buying gifts, or simple
questions of concern such as Are you cold? or Did you sleep well? , and, of course, the most
common way: through food. In this culture, food is the way our parents show us love, which then
gets transferred to the way we show love to others. Therefore, food has become a sensitive topic to
many Asians and Asian Americans, so

40. To Kill A Mockingbird, And To Kill A Mockingbird
What does it mean to be oppressed? To be oppressed means to be have rights taken away, as a
result of discrimination. People can be judged by their race, financial situation, gender, etc. and
can do nothing about this discrimination because so many other people strongly believe in
segregating the community by the standards that they ve set up. The image of a tiny person next
to a large thumb, the poem I Look at the World by Langston Hughes, the excerpt from Never Fall
Down by Patricia McCormick, and the novel To Kill a Mockingbirdby Harper Lee all illustrate
what it means to be oppressed. The tiny person in the image, the person from the poem, the person
from the the excerpt, and characters from To Kill a Mockingbird have been discriminated by the
people in their society.
Source #1, an image of a small person standing under a giant thumb, depicts a scene where the
person is ultimately helpless. The hand is about one hundred times larger than the person. If the
individual were to even try to fight against it, the thumb would squish it in an instance. The hand
also wears a cuff, indicating that it must belong to a person of high status. Because of it s high
status, it can treat people that he feels are inferior to him any way he wants, and it knows that it
wields more power than the person it s got under it s thumb. Consequently, the person under the
thumb is forced to stand still and behave the way society, or the hand, wants it to. Moreover, his
rights have been

41. Was The Demise Of The Titanic, The “Unsinkable” Ship,...
Was the demise of the Titanic, the unsinkable ship, actually caused by an iceberg? People have
been told for centuries that the Titanic s catastrophic sinking was caused by the ship hitting an
iceberg. Hundreds of movies have been made and thousands of articles and books have been
written about the infamous sinking. However, the cause of the sinking is very different than most
people have been told all along. The Titanic, which was regarded as unsinkable, was the largest
ship of its time. The ship was owned by the White Star Line, and departed from Southampton
England on April 10 1912, scheduled to bring its 2224 passengers to New York. In the early hours
of April 15 1912, the ship sank, killing 1500 people. Most historians believe that... Show more

One major piece of evidence that supports the fire theory is the images discovered by Molony
that reveal a thirty foot long, diagonal black mark on the hull s front starboard side. These
marks resemble scorch marks caused by a fire at almost exactly where the iceberg struck the ship
(NY Daily News). The pictures Molony references were found at an auction house and were
taken by chief electrical engineer of the Titanic, John Westbeech Kempster. Kempster took these
photographs on April 1 and April 2 at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern
Ireland, just over a week before the ship sailed (CNN). At first, Molony thought the black mark
could just be a reflection, but after careful examination, he found that the mark did not change
places between photographs. One thing that caught Molony s eye about the mark was that it was
facing the sea, not the dock. Molony believes that the ship was strategically positioned so that
the passengers were not able to see the mark, so as not to raise questions (New York Times). Dr.
Guillermo Rein, who specializes in studying coal fires, also examined the photos with Molony. In
a documentary about the coal fire entitled Titanic: The New Evidence , Dr. Rein states that the
marks could definitely be from a coal fire. Since the photographs were taken about ten days before
the ship s departure, the fire must have been going on for at least that

42. Pertussis Case Studies
Bordetella pertussis, causes fairly mild symptoms and a prolonged cough in adolescents and adults
that have been vaccinated, however in very young, unvaccinated children the infection typically
develops into an acute disease called whooping cough, which can become life threatening (1). Often
times it is the older, vaccinated family members that unknowingly bring the bacteria home.
Bordetella pertussisdiverged from Bordetella bronchiseptica fairly recently, however they are so
closely related that they should be considered different strains of the same species, rather than
separate species (2). The biggest difference between the two lines are their host populations. B.
pertussisinfects humans, while B. bronchiseptica has a very large range... Show more content on

pertussis exhibits a clear preference for ciliated cells and alveolar macrophages found in their
human host, it is capable of forming colonies anywhere between the nasopharynx cavity and the
lungs (3). Human nasopharynx creates a great environment for the bacteria to first colonize and
infect (1). Bps polysaccharide is necessary for B. pertussis to form a biofilm in the nasopharynx,
however it is not involved in the colonization of the lungs (1). The biofilms are the reason the
bacteria is able to survive for such extended periods of time within the host (1). C terminus of
mature filamentous hemagglutinin mediates bacterial adherence to epithelial and macrophage like
cells of the host (2). It is necessary for colonization of the respiratory tract, these experiments were
performed with rats using B. bronchiseptica, however it is believed that the rat models should also
apply to B. pertussis
