This is a powerpoint presentation that discusses about the background of Iliad: the Golden Apple of Discord. It also discusses the symbolisms used and the summary of the Golden Apple of Discord
5. On the Mount Olympus, the home of the Gods, the king of the Gods,
Zeus, planned for a wedding feast for the sea nymph, Thetis and her
mortal fiance named Peleus. All Gods and Goddesses were all
invited, except for one, Eris, the Goddess of Chaos and Discord. Zeus
did not invite Eris because wherever Eris went, she only brought
chaos and misery. But Eris learned about the wedding feast, and she
was jealous and very furious. In the midst of the wedding feast, she
arrived at the great hall and flung a golden apple. In the golden apple,
there were inscriptions with the word kallisti meaning For the Fairest.
Now all of the goddesses rushed to claim the golden apple but they
started to argue and fight for the apple. But at the end, three
goddesses remain: Athena, Aphrodite and Hera.
6. The three goddesses turned to Zeus to choose between them who
was the fairest of them all. He understands that no matter who he will
choose, the other two will be in grief. He declared that Paris of Troy
will judge who will be the fairest of all. Zeus commanded his son,
Hermes, to lead the goddesses and Paris of Troy to Mount Ida. Paris
carefully inspected the three goddesses. The goddesses began to
bribe him. Hera told him that he would be the King of Europe and
Asia. Athena told him that he would be the greatest warrior who ever
lived. Last to step forward was Aphrodite, who bribed him that she
would make Helen of Sparta, the most beautiful mortal woman in the
world, to fall in love with him. Paris, then gives the golden apple to
Aphrodite, then raided the house of King Menelaus of Sparta,
husband of Helen. He abducted Helen, and Helen fell in love with
Paris.
7. But King Menelaus returned and noticed that Helen was gone.
Everyone vowed to make sure that Helen will return to
Menelaus as soon as possible. They would make sure that the
land of Troy would be destroyed as a consequence of the act
of Paris. This is the major cause of the start of the Trojan War.
