Introductions:
• Please can you introduce yourself with the
following information:
– Your name
– Company you are from
– And what you want to gain from the workshop
Part 1: What is Resource Efficiency
• Part 1 covers:
1) What are resources?
2) Why it is important to use them efficiently?
3) What are the benefits?
4) What do YOU use and why?
What are Resources?
• Anything your business uses in order to
function, for example:
– Electricity
– Gas
– Raw materials
– Water
– Petrol or diesel
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
• Main resources we use are:
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
All of these produce:
Part 1: What is Resource Efficiency?
Why is this important to my business?
• The average business uses 20% of these
resources inefficiently
• Simply, saving 20% on your costs = larger
profits!
• So, how does this effect your profits….
Part 1: What is Resource Efficiency?
In real terms:
If your turnover = £100,000
And 10% of this is profit = £10,000
Your costs currently amount to 25% = £25,000
So, if you reduce your costs by 20% = £5,000 saved
Now your profit is £15,000, which is equivalent to a
50% increase in turnover!
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
• As a bonus, you can help save the planet as
well
Cost = Consumption = Carbon
14p = 1 kWh = 0.5041kg CO2e
Use less, spend less, produce less carbon
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
Some examples:
• Marks and Spencer Plan A
– Top management dictated new policy
– Started in 2007 – 100 commitments in 5 years
– Now extended to 180 by 2015
– Reduced energy use by 28%
– Move towards Carbon Neutrality
– Generated £185M in benefits
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
Other benefits include:
1) Open new opportunities in the market
2) More productive workplace
3) Tap into a growing “green” marketplace
4) Feel good about yourself and your business
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
Workbook exercise and discussion:
Your Resource Use
• Consider the resources your business uses
and how these are used
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
Part 2 covers:
1) Why you should start measuring?
2) How you can measure and monitor usage
3) How to decide where to focus your
attention?
4) Use the workbook to start saving
5) Writing and following your action plan
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
• Why measure?
“You can’t manage what you don’t measure”
Measuring and monitoring enables your business to:
-Establish a baseline for your current usage
-Start to control usage
-Locate areas of intensive resource use
-View positive effects of changes in practice
Can provide some instant savings, for example:
Measuring your usage - Electricity
• Examine your bills
– Record units (kWh) used, not money spend
– Note any standing charges
• Use your electricity monitor
• ass
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
• Examine your bills
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
• Single shift office
Measuring your usage - Waste
• Examine you waste streams
– Record what is currently thrown away
– Record what is currently recycled
• Review segregation opportunities
– Anything with larger volume
Measuring your usage - Gas
• Examine bills
– Record kWh of gas, not money
– Check standing charges
– Remember contract expiry dates
• Take meter readings and record
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
Thermal Energy Use
How to use this recorded data
• Assess the areas of highest use
• Assess which areas have least control on
them
• Look at work that has already been
completed
Types of changes – Behavioural or Process
• Low or no financial cost
• Can be easier to implement
• Try to be creative
• Carrot can work better than stick!
• Involve all staff for suggestions
Types of changes – Capital spend
• Expenditure on some sort of energy saving
equipment
• Need to consider savings balanced against
cost
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
• Payback period
– This is the length of time that the capital cost of a
project is recouped by the saving in expenditure
by that project
– E.g. total cost £10,000
– Annual saving = £2,000
– Payback = 10,000 / 2,000 = 5 years
– This doesn’t account for other savings, such as
increased productivity or decreased maintenance
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
Whole Life Cost
Setup costs
• capital equipment cost
• delivery
• installation
• building alterations
• staff training
End of life costs
• decommissioning
• disposal
Resource efficiency (or going green!)
• Local example
– Manufacturer of wood packaging and pallets
– 24hr operation, large, high ceiling space, no natural
light
– Annual lighting costs of over £17,000
– Total cost, including installation was £15,500
– Annual saving of £10,000 in electricity, plus lower
maintenance costs
– Plus annual carbon saving of 65 tonnes!
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
• LED Bulbs
• For 8 lamps, running 8 hours per day
Bulb kWh per year Cost (at 14p per
unit)
CO2 (kg)
Halogen 1168 £163.52 631
LED 164 £22.89 88
How to go green – Measuring and Saving
Workbook exercise:
Writing your own green action plan
• List the biggest uses of resource in your
business
• Using this list, use the workbook to decide
on a few simple actions that you can
implement right away to start saving
Green marketing, funding and what’s next
Part 3 covers:
1) Where can I find funding?
2) Why tell people about your green improvements?
3) Raise awareness
4) Environment Policies
5) Environmental Management Systems
6) What should I do now?
Green marketing, funding and what’s next
• Sources of funding
• Capital
Bristol IYRE Grants
• Invest in renewables
• The Feed in Tariffs (FiTs)
• The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
Green marketing, funding and what to do now
Why tell people?
1. Important to your customers, and opens new
opportunities
2. Increases staff productivity
3. Growing sector of the market (EGS sector grew 4.7%
between 2009/10 – 2010/11, non EGS was 0.7% within
same period)
4. CSR
Green marketing, funding and what’s next
Raise awareness:
- Internally
- Environmental policy or EMS
- Integrate into your company’s:
- emails
- website
- Make it relevant to your audience
- Press releases
Green marketing, funding and what’s next
Environmental Policy – should include:
• An introduction to the business
• State company commitment
• Clearly identify and specify environmental
impacts
• Clearly identify the actions to be taken to
manage environmental impacts.
• Be signed and dated by the director and
communicated to the relevant stakeholders
e.g. employees, contractors, suppliers.
Green marketing, funding and what’s next
Environmental Management System (EMS)
• Externally accredited, usually to ISO14001
• Control environmental performance through
documented processes
• Follow a plan-do-check-act cycle
• Ensure legal compliance
• Requires continual improvement
• Recognised credential for business tenders
Green marketing, funding and what’s next
Other options:
• Join a local cluster group
• Engage your colleagues
• Be realistic – no one can do it all straight away
Aims and Objectives
• Understand about resource efficiency
• How you assess the “greeness” of your
business
• Some initial steps you can take to become
greener
• How your business will benefit from these
actions
• Possible sources of funding available
• Where you can go for further information
Forms!
• Now the exciting bit!
• Thanks for coming and good luck with your
saving!

  • 7. What are Resources? • Anything your business uses in order to function, for example: – Electricity – Gas – Raw materials – Water – Petrol or diesel
  • 8. Resource efficiency (or going green!) • Main resources we use are:
  • 9. Resource efficiency (or going green!)
  • 10. Resource efficiency (or going green!)
  • 11. All of these produce:
  • 12. Part 1: What is Resource Efficiency? Why is this important to my business? • The average business uses 20% of these resources inefficiently • Simply, saving 20% on your costs = larger profits! • So, how does this effect your profits….
  • 13. Part 1: What is Resource Efficiency? In real terms: If your turnover = £100,000 And 10% of this is profit = £10,000 Your costs currently amount to 25% = £25,000 So, if you reduce your costs by 20% = £5,000 saved Now your profit is £15,000, which is equivalent to a 50% increase in turnover!
  • 14. Resource efficiency (or going green!) • As a bonus, you can help save the planet as well Cost = Consumption = Carbon 14p = 1 kWh = 0.5041kg CO2e Use less, spend less, produce less carbon
  • 15. Resource efficiency (or going green!) Some examples: • Marks and Spencer Plan A – Top management dictated new policy – Started in 2007 – 100 commitments in 5 years – Now extended to 180 by 2015 – Reduced energy use by 28% – Move towards Carbon Neutrality – Generated £185M in benefits
  • 16. Resource efficiency (or going green!) Other benefits include: 1) Open new opportunities in the market 2) More productive workplace 3) Tap into a growing “green” marketplace 4) Feel good about yourself and your business
  • 17. Resource efficiency (or going green!) Workbook exercise and discussion: Your Resource Use • Consider the resources your business uses and how these are used
  • 18. How to go green – Measuring and Saving Part 2 covers: 1) Why you should start measuring? 2) How you can measure and monitor usage 3) How to decide where to focus your attention? 4) Use the workbook to start saving 5) Writing and following your action plan
  • 19. How to go green – Measuring and Saving • Why measure? “You can’t manage what you don’t measure” Measuring and monitoring enables your business to: -Establish a baseline for your current usage -Start to control usage -Locate areas of intensive resource use -View positive effects of changes in practice
  • 20. Can provide some instant savings, for example:
  • 21. Measuring your usage - Electricity • Examine your bills – Record units (kWh) used, not money spend – Note any standing charges • Use your electricity monitor • ass
  • 22. How to go green – Measuring and Saving • Examine your bills
  • 23. How to go green – Measuring and Saving • Single shift office
  • 24. Measuring your usage - Waste • Examine you waste streams – Record what is currently thrown away – Record what is currently recycled • Review segregation opportunities – Anything with larger volume
  • 25. Measuring your usage - Gas • Examine bills – Record kWh of gas, not money – Check standing charges – Remember contract expiry dates • Take meter readings and record
  • 26. How to go green – Measuring and Saving Thermal Energy Use
  • 27. How to use this recorded data • Assess the areas of highest use • Assess which areas have least control on them • Look at work that has already been completed
  • 28. Types of changes – Behavioural or Process • Low or no financial cost • Can be easier to implement • Try to be creative • Carrot can work better than stick! • Involve all staff for suggestions
  • 29. Types of changes – Capital spend • Expenditure on some sort of energy saving equipment • Need to consider savings balanced against cost
  • 30. How to go green – Measuring and Saving • Payback period – This is the length of time that the capital cost of a project is recouped by the saving in expenditure by that project – E.g. total cost £10,000 – Annual saving = £2,000 – Payback = 10,000 / 2,000 = 5 years – This doesn’t account for other savings, such as increased productivity or decreased maintenance
  • 31. How to go green – Measuring and Saving Whole Life Cost Setup costs • capital equipment cost • delivery • installation • building alterations • staff training End of life costs • decommissioning • disposal
  • 32. Resource efficiency (or going green!) • Local example – Manufacturer of wood packaging and pallets – 24hr operation, large, high ceiling space, no natural light – Annual lighting costs of over £17,000 – Total cost, including installation was £15,500 – Annual saving of £10,000 in electricity, plus lower maintenance costs – Plus annual carbon saving of 65 tonnes!
  • 33. How to go green – Measuring and Saving • LED Bulbs • For 8 lamps, running 8 hours per day Bulb kWh per year Cost (at 14p per unit) CO2 (kg) Halogen 1168 £163.52 631 LED 164 £22.89 88
  • 34. How to go green – Measuring and Saving Workbook exercise: Writing your own green action plan • List the biggest uses of resource in your business • Using this list, use the workbook to decide on a few simple actions that you can implement right away to start saving
  • 35. Green marketing, funding and what’s next Part 3 covers: 1) Where can I find funding? 2) Why tell people about your green improvements? 3) Raise awareness 4) Environment Policies 5) Environmental Management Systems 6) What should I do now?
  • 36. Green marketing, funding and what’s next • Sources of funding • Capital Bristol IYRE Grants • Invest in renewables • The Feed in Tariffs (FiTs) • The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
  • 37. Green marketing, funding and what to do now Why tell people? 1. Important to your customers, and opens new opportunities 2. Increases staff productivity 3. Growing sector of the market (EGS sector grew 4.7% between 2009/10 – 2010/11, non EGS was 0.7% within same period) 4. CSR
  • 38. Green marketing, funding and what’s next Raise awareness: - Internally - Environmental policy or EMS - Integrate into your company’s: - emails - website - Make it relevant to your audience - Press releases
