GLOBALIZATION AND TECHNOLOGY OF PAKISTAN
Globalization Challenges for Pakistan
• The major fault lines which one can identify in terms of globalization and
human development are as follows:
o The cultural implications of globalization
o Growing asymmetry in income distribution
o Growing unemployment because of stress on quality control and
standardization of manufactured goods
o Growing rural-urban divide
A few Questions
asked about the
Globalization of
Pakistan
• The response of Pakistani state to various
cultural globalizations has been
inconsistent, contradictory and confusing.
• For Islamists, globalization is a threat to
the traditional family system which
encourages women to seek
independence from the closely knit
family system.
• For modernists, globalization is an
opportunity to reshape Pakistan’s cultural
paradigm by breaking traditional taboos.
Cultural Globalization of Pakistan
Economical Globalization of Pakistan
• After the inception of the WTO regime in 1995, the process of linking Pakistan’s
economy with the global economy was accelerated.
• Pakistan got able to achieve a sustainable average economic growth rate of 7.5 %
from the year 2005 to 2007. Foreign debt was reduced to US $ 36.5 billion and the
economy no longer depended on foreign aid.
• Exports increased to over US $ 17 billion and the country attracted over US $ 3
billion foreign investment.
__________________________
• In 2008, worldwide economic recession and soaring oil prices created grave
problems for Pakistan’s economy.
• Unprecedented rise in the oil prices adversely affected the prices of all essential
commodities especially food.
Technology in Pakistan
• Science and technology is a growing field in Pakistan. Pakistan has a large
pool of scientists, engineers, doctors, and technicians assuming an active
role in science and technology. Liaquat Ali Khan the first Prime Minister of
Pakistan, made various reforms to initiate improvement in higher education
and scientific research.
• The real growth in science in Pakistan occurred after the establishment of
the Higher education Commission in 2002 which became the major sponsor
of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences under the leadership of Prof. Atta-ur-
Rahman.
• On the request of Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, Intel initiated a nationwide
program to train school teachers in Information and Communication
technologies in March 2002 which has led to the training of 220,000 school
teachers in 70 districts and cities across Pakistan.
• A 15-year tax holiday was approved on the recommendation of Prof. Atta-
ur-Rahman which has resulted in growth of IT business from $30 million in
2001 to over $3 billion.
• Pakistan has been known internationally for some of its major
achievements in science and technology such as successful development of
media and military technologies and a growing base of doctors and
engineers, as well as its new influx of software engineers.
Fun Fact
• Chemistry remains the strongest subject in the country with the
International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences playing the lead
role with the largest postgraduate research program in the country having
about 600 students enrolled for PhD.
Physics (theoretical, nuclear, particle, laser, and quantum
physics), material science, metallurgy (engineering), biology,
and mathematics, are some of the other fields in which Pakistani scientists
have contributed.
Comparison of Pakistan with
China
GLOBALIZATION AND TECHNOLOGY OF CHINA
Economic Growth
• Globalization has been a powerful force for economic growth.
Research from the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) finds that the
movement of goods, services, finance, data, and people across
borders adds to GDP and fuels productivity growth—
• and China has been one of the world’s major beneficiaries. The
nation’s period of double-digit GDP growth in the mid-2000s was
fueled by even faster growth in the flow of goods, in and out of
China. As exports surged from just $257 billion in 2000 to $2.4
trillion in 2016,
and China became the world’s top exporter
Culture of China
• Chinese culture also has reaction on global
culture. In recent years, China is making an
effort to introduce its traditional cultures
and values to the world.
• By the end of 2009, there have been 282
Confucius institutes and 272 Confucius
Classrooms established in 88 countries,
• and the Confucius Institutes/Classrooms
adopt suitable teaching styles to teach
Chinese language as well as promoting
Chinese cultures.
Technology in China
• Technology of China is at the peak level in the whole world.
• There are various companies which operate in Pakistan and are one of the
leading brands in Pakistan.
o Xiaomi
o Vivo
o Oppo
o Huawei
o Telephone Communication Limited(TCL)
•3 Chinese Major Technological
Projects
1. Construction of the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope
(FAST) in Guizhou will be completed in September. The FAST will be the
world’s largest single-dish radio telescope with three times the sensitivity
of the Arecibo Observatory built by the United States in Puerto Rico. A
major mission of FAST is to look for radio signals sent out by outer space
intelligence.
2. China is also developing its first deep sea station which will allow three
crew members to live and work at depth beyond 1,000 meters for two
months. The deep sea station is expected to strengthen the nation’s ability
to explore and exploit minerals and energy resources on previously
inaccessible ocean floors. The project is expected to be completed before
2020.
3. China will launch the world’s first quantum communication satellite in
June, bringing the technology of quantum teleportation in science fiction a
step closer to real life. The satellite is expected to create an unbreakable
link of encrypted communication between China and Europe.
CPEC(China-Pakistan Economic Corridor)
• China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is a collection of infrastructure projects
that are currently under construction throughout Pakistan. Originally valued
at $46 billion, the value of CPEC projects is worth $62 billion as of 2017.
• Longer term projects under CPEC also includes construction of the 682
kilometer long Khunjerab Railway line between the city of Havelian to the
Khunjerab Pass on the Chinese border, with extension to China's Lanxin
Railway in Kashgar, Xinjiang. The railway will roughly parallel the Karakoram
Highway, and is expected to be complete in 2030.
• The cost of the entire project is estimated to be approximately $12 billion,
and will require 5 years for completion.
Historical Background:
GLOBALIZATION
Globalization is relatively new term used to
describe a very old process
 It is a historical process that
began with our human
ancestors moving out of
country to spread all over the
globe
 Distance has been largely
overcome and human made
barriers lowered or removed to
facilitate the exchange of goods
and ideas
• In this age wide spread
development took place in
field of infrastructure and
connectivity.
This led to more interaction
between the nations and sharing
of ideas, culture and tradition took
place
• After spread the world there are numerous instances where trade links
where established between various countries like INDIA , Egypt, China,
Roman Empire and so on
• There were regular business links between the parathion Empire ,
Roman Empire
Medieval:
In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages (or medieval period) lasted from the 5th to
the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged
into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery
An important history of globalization where jewish and the muslim
traders start going different part of the world to sell various items
In china first postal service was introduced and paper was invented. Which
change the history
• The industrial revolution in the 19th century was
one of the major period s in the history of
globalization
• Significant increase in quantity and quality of
the products
• This led to higher exports
• Better trade
• Good business relations
• Due to better products and
colonization lots of the countries in
the world became the consumers of
the European markets
• The phase of pre-globalization
perhaps came to end after the first
world war
