3. 1. WEATHER IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
(IN THE PRESENT)
The climate is typical European continental climate with
warm, dry summers and fairly cold winters. We have 4
seasons:
1) Spring
is usually cooler, the temperature is around 10°C on average.
In these months the rainfall/snowfall is averages about 161 mm.
From March to May there are approx. 479 hours of sunshine.

4. 2) Summer
The average summer temperature is about 17°C. However, this
also includes mountains. In the towns the temperature in June,
July and August can be 35°C.

5. 3) Autumn
The first of the autumn months is September, which is still quite
warm. However, the beginning of October brings more rain and
the average daily temperature falls to 10°C.
The leaves on trees change colour and fall off. In the Czech
name of November is “Listopad” meaning “leaf-fall”.
In the late autumn the first ground frosts are possible.

6. 4) Winter
lasts from December to February. Temperatures in towns may
drop as low as -20°C, and in the mountains it can be colder.
However, recent winters have been milder with temperatures
slightly below zero – yet still cold enough to enjoy skiing, cross-
country skiing or just taking a walk through snow-covered cities.

8. 2.2. VISIT TO THE HOME FOR ELDERY PEOPLE
(INTERVIEW)
We have visited the Home for Eldery People to ask about the
seasons in the past.
We have asked these questions:
1) What was the weather like in spring?
Winter finished. Temperature was changeable. Everything was in
blossom. On the yard, there were ducks with ducklings.
Sometimes there were floods.
Children played football, ball games, hide-and-seek.
2) What was the weather like in summer?
It was sunny and dry. Childern had holidays and fruit ripen.
People liked going to holidays. Often there were storms. The
temperature didn´t change so often. Children swam in ponds,
ate strawberries, slept in a tents.
9. 3) What was the weather like in autumn?
It was warm, often with rain. People went to the forest to collect
mushrooms. On 11th November it started to snow. Children flew
kites, which made themselves.
4) What was the weather like in winter?
It was very cold the whole winter. There was a lot of snow.
Children went sledging and skating on a frozen lake. Sometimes
there wasn´t school, because there were problems with heating-
it was called coal holidays. People celebrated Christmas, made
decorations and parents and grandparents told life strories and
fairy tales.
5) Were there sudden changes in the weather?
No, there weren´t. The weather was more stable, the
temperature didn´t change a lot during the seasons.

12. 3. EXTREME WEATHER (FLOODS)
In the Czech Republic we have problems with floods.
The most extreme was in year 1997. It was called "the flood of
the century" .
It took 50 lives and cost damages for 63 billion crowns.
The largest and most devastating floods of the 20th century
affected a third of the Czech Republic - 536 towns and
municipalities in 34 districts. In the Morava and Odra basins,
falls within a few days, somewhere over half the annual rainfall.
13. 4. SOME WEATHER PROVERBS
Czech English
Medardova kápě 40 dní kape. When it rains on 8th June, it will
rain next 40 days.
Je jako aprílové počasí. He is like weather in April. (It
changes a lot).
Chladné ranní rosy - polední žáry. Cold morning dew - noon heat.
Studený máj,v stodole háj. Cold May, wealth in a barn.
Po Bartoloměji žádné teplo více. After Bartholomew (24th August)
no more heat.
