Global warming refers to the long-term increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. It is primarily caused by the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, mainly through human activities such as burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas), deforestation, and industrial processes.
