The University of Arizona
Global Micro-Campus Network
1
What’s the Idea?
2
The UA Global Micro-Campus Network is a network of
micro-campuses, or UA-spaces on the campuses of partner
universities.
Micro-campuses take first-rate UA education to students at
partner universities around the globe.
other forms of
abroad, service-
Micro-campuses serve as hubs for
internationalization including study
learning, and joint faculty research.

International Branch Campuses
Around 600,000 students enrolled in international
branch campuses (IBCs) in their home countries.
Major Critiques of IBCs:
Require large, risky investments
Take a long time to establish/build and then locked
in indefinitely
Costly for students
In competition with local universities
Only focused on revenue, and insufficiently
attuned to research mission of home university
7
A New Model:
Micro-Campuses
8
Guiding Principles For New Model
Mission-Centered: Further the university’s educational, research, and
service missions.
Affordable and Accessible Education: Meaningfully expand global
access to international education by allowing non-US students to
affordably earn a global credential without the need to travel abroad.
Self-Sustaining and Scalable: Generate sufficient revenue to sustain
over time without the need for outside support, and scalable to
multiple locations to ensure global impact.
Aligned Incentives with Partner: Non-competing, expand the reach of
partner universities, develop partner capacity, and further the
educational and research mission of our partners.
What is a Micro-Campus?
A micro-campus is a UA-designated space on the campus
of a partner university. The space gives students a sense
of place, a sense that they are students at the University
of Arizona, wherever they are in the world.
10
How Does it Work?
SHARED CAMPUS – The partner university allows use of its
physical campus and classrooms, and provides a designated
space for the UA.
SHARED STUDENTS – Students maintain their student status at
the partner university, while enrolled in for-credit UA courses,
offered on location at the partner university.
SHARED TUITION – UA tuition is shared with partner
AFFORDABLE – UA program fees are set near in-state tuition
rates to increase access and affordability.
FULL DEGREES – Students earn a UA degree, either as a dual
degree with partner university, or a stand alone degree.
11
COLLABORATIVE TEACHING –
Courses are co-taught by a UA
and a local professor through a
flipped classroom model, or a
locally-basedUA faculty member.

Leading Innovation
Commentary on the UA Micro-Campus Network
“It’s Arizona’s deft alternative to the financial and reputational risks
of a branch campus. No huge capital investments. No enormous cost
outlay into facilities, services and employed teaching staff… It is as
agile as it gets.” – University World News
“The last couple of weeks have seen the unveiling of two massive but
interesting strategic gambles taken by a couple of US public
universities. I am speaking, of course, about … the University of
Arizona’s attempt to create a global set of “microcampuses.”... It’s a
smart move all around.” - Higher Education Strategy Associates
“It is an innovative approach… Such a global footprint, therefore, has
real impact … This real and comprehensive international impact
though is therefore about much more than just the money”. –
WONKE
“Higher ed can expect to see rising interest in micro-campuses in
2018”. – Education Dive, January 2018
