5. Some facts about Yemen
• Yemen has seen a number of
economic, political and social changes
over the past five decades. The most
important of these were the revolution of
September 1962 against the Imamate in
North Yemen, and that of October 1973
against British colonial rule in South
Yemen.
• The 1970s and 1980s involved periods of
conflict between the North and the South.
• Yemeni society is characterized by
tribalism, especially in the northern and
eastern parts.
