The global child care assignment discusses the history and current state of child care in England. Early childhood care emerged in England in the late 18th century. Currently, centers are called "day nurseries" and provide care for children over age five, similar to models in Canada. There are approximately 409,000 children in child care in England, with 94% attending privately operated centers run as businesses. Subsidies are limited compared to systems in other countries like Canada.
