the blues. To him, they were very important to African American history. It also
subliminally indicates what Boy Willie s plan was. He wants to sell the piano so
that he can buy land and grow his own cotton. He s doesn t want to continuously
work for other people and wants something of his own. Symbols: The Piano The
most significant symbol is the 137 year old piano. It is an object that displays and
showcases years of their family history. It has numerous meanings and symbolizes a
lot of things from those 137 years. Originally, It symbolizes the horrors of the system
of slavery showing how exchangeable a human could be during that time. The piano
continues to represent the hardships of that family and all they endured and
ultimately is the emblem for that family and their history. It s what keeps their family

She made her statement that day on the bus. She was tired and her feet hurt and she

African Americans had to fight for their rights. December 20,1956 was considered

The Jackhammer Syndrome Poem Analysis
Society s conventions teach that immoderate desires are unappealing manifestations
of basal instincts that individuals must learn to control. However, a certain sense of
liberating freedom is also attached to the idea of living in uninhibited by the
guidelines that society imposes. The Jackhammer Syndrome , a poem by Al Purdy,
and Susan Orlean s The Orchid Thief present two different narratives concerning the
pursuit of personal desire and deal with the consequences that ensue from this
behavior. Their characters experiences suggest that the unchecked pursuit of personal
desires, at the expense of conformity within society, does not produce lasting
gratification. The Jackhammer Syndrome is narrated by an individual who recounts
various memorable events in his life. He mentions such instances as hide and seek
and run sheep run/in my old hometown/where the kid was pretty funny and
swimming across a river meeting a girl halfway/along the wet footpath and going/on
together to the other/side for an hour doing/nothing dizzily balanced in the moment.
These memories, which seem ordinary and pleasant, are described by the narrator in a
way that causes the reader to question his true feelings towards them. Throughout the
entire poem, the author does not use a single mark of punctuation, dividing thoughts
according to verse instead. However, the more the narrator reminisces, the less
coherent the verses become, combining multiple ideas that lack an obvious
connection. These
Essay on On Roman Military Matters by Vegetius
On Roman Military Matters, commonly referred to as De Re Militari, by Flavius
Vegetius Renatus is essentially a field manual focusing on Roman military
organization and how to field an army in a time of war. Vegetius discusses not only
the development of the Roman soldier, from recruitment to final training, but also the
organization, weaponry, strategy and tactics employed by the Romans legions.
Though Vegetius, through evidence, had no military background or experience, and
it is unclear on what evidence he based his argument, he accurately and in great detail
described the structure of the Military of the late Roman Empire. Vegetius was an
author of the 5th Century Roman Empire with only two surviving works, De Re
Militari and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the recruit failed the examination, a ceremony that Vegetius fails to describe, a
better candidate would replace them. Initial training, according to the author,
consisted of marching, running, jumping and swimming. Vegetius placed great
importance on what seem like basic human actions and believed that those skills
were essential in the development of a fit soldier. Following the initial training,
levies were outfitted and trained on the use of the primary Roman weaponry, the
short sword, javelins, bow, sling, and introduced to the wear of the requisite Roman
armor. Vegetius concluded with the subsequent training of the soldiers in order to
sustain their level of readiness. The author contended that his purpose for Book I
was to point out methods required to field a good and serviceable army and
discussed that some nations lost their sense of military discipline and that fact
caused their downfall on the battlefield. In Book II The Organization of the Legion,
Vegetius described the composition of the Roman legions. He began with the
explanation of the differences between legions and auxiliaries, legions being Romans
and auxiliaries being drawn from barbarians. Here, Vegetius discussed the decay of
the legion and stated that it was up to the eEmperor to restore the Roman army to
greatness, a
Analysis Of The Man In The Money Suit
The image being examined, The Man in the Money Suit, is a hand drawn sketch
by R.H Burnside for a costume design idea, which was put into play at the Billy
Rose Theatre in New York. The theatrical production for which this costume design
concept originated, transpired in 1939; however, the image itself was drawn in
1923. The drawing portrays a man, positioned front facing, wearing a matching
tuxedo and hat holding his arms out wide with white gloves on. The design of the
suit coat, pants, and hat are all a simple checkerboard pattern with alternating white
and black squares with each white space having a dollar sign inside of it. The man
seems to be of a fairly white complexion suggesting that the man to play this role in
the playwas white. In itself, the image, is simple with minimal shading, a small
shadow of the man and a blank background.
The production for which this costume design was made was titled Better Times and
told the story of a small town facing economically adversity as a result of the
introduction of a charging tax hike. Ultimately, the citizens of the suburban area
united as a community to help each other repay debts, fines and taxes to finally
negotiate with the man in the money suit. The man in the money suit was a
government agent in charge of collecting debts. His role was to remind struggling
locals that they had outstanding debts and make threats of the consequences they
would face if they did not make timely payments. The man in the money suit

names mean different things depending on the origin of them. Many names we hear
have been pasted on throughout history. Some have been given in the name of a

their name be of English, Polish, or Russian origin. Well, the name Daniel has an
origin of ancient Babylon. The city of Babylon was the best known city from the

Bob Marley And The Wailers
Bob Marley and The Wailers: The Influence
Bob Marley and the Wailers were an influential reggae group from Jamaica. The
group produced music that was inspiration for the people of Jamaica. Both in their
struggles for freedom and equality. The one inspiration for the musicians was the
teachings of Rastafarianism: a type of monotheism religion. Monotheism literally
means the belief in only one God. Rastafarians believe in one God called Jah. They
believe that Jah sent his son in the form of a man named Haile Selassie I.
Rastafarians also believe that speech is very important, because through speech
they can feel the presence and power of God. When the Wailers released their first
record called Simmer Down it sold over 80,000 copies ( Early Wailers ). Rastafarian
teachings also influenced many of the later albums the band would produce. Robert
Nesta Marley and the Wailers developed great music full of love and inspiration. The
band produced music with strong messages, high energy performances with proactive
audiences, and high levels of performer engagement.
During the 1960 s Bob Marley and Neville Livingston crossed paths. Neville was
known by another name Bunny Wailer. Joe Higgs then set up an opportunity for
them to meet Peter Macintosh while taking singing lessons from Higgs. They grew
close and at first called their group Juveniles but brothers in the ghetto said. You

False Killer Dolphins
According to Vancouver Aquarium, the false killer whale was first discovered as a
skeleton, not as a live dolphin. Because its skull looks similar to a killer whale s skull
scientists called it a false killer whale (Pseudorca).
Despite having whale in its name, the false killer whale is actually a large dolphin
like its namesake the killer whale . The difference between a whale and a dolphin is
much like the difference between a ship and a boat . It has more to do with size than
science. In fact, false killer whales are large dolphins. They prefer tropical to
temperate waters that are deeper than 3,300 feet (1000m) and occur in the U.S. in
Hawaii, along the entire West Coast, and from the Mid Atlantic coastal states south.
The species can also be found in all tropical and temperate oceans worldwide.[4] The
young false killer whale in Vancouver Aquarium Chester was rescued by the
Vancouver Aquarium Marine Rescue Team with help from local residents and
Fisheries and Ocean Canada (DFO) after standing as a month old calf on Chesterman
Beach in Tofino in July 2014.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They feed during the day and at night on fishes and cephalopods, and they are
known to attack smaller dolphins that are involved in the tuna purse seine fishery in
the Pacific Ocean.[4] This species is listed as Endangered under the Endangered
Species Act, in 2010, NMFS initiated a status review in response to a petition to list
the Main Hawaiian islands insular population of Hawaiian false killer whales as an
endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
AlВthough false killer whales are hunted by huВmans and there are anВnual mass

My Experience At Starbucks And Drinking Coffee
I sit in my kitchen every morning, with one eye open, listening to the sound of the
dripping water as it fills the clear decanter with black liquid gold. The smell of
hazelnut aroma fills the air and a sigh of relief escapes my breath knowing that it s
almost time to taste the delicious coffee that will awaken my senses and help me start
the new day. Coffee, also known as Joe, Dirt, Brew, Java, Jitter Juice, and Liquid
Energy, has been a staple in my family since I was a small boy. I still remember my
father hunched over the kitchen table reading the morning newspaper while drinking
a fresh cup of Joe. As an adult I have come to appreciate coffee especially in the

In addition, carbohydrates play an important role in the coffee bean.
Carbohydrates serve as an aroma binder in raw coffee beans. They help the quality
of coffee by contributing to its thickness and consistency. In other studies
carbohydrates in coffee have also been known as dietary fiber to assist probiotics
within the digestive system. Coffee is also the number one source of antioxidants.
This simple drink is concentrated with a group of antioxidants that are called
flavonoids. According to medical journals flavonoids possess antiviral, anti
allergic, anti platelet, anti inflammatory, and antitumor activities. Coffee has been
around for many first discovered in 850 A.D by a goatherder who noticed an
energetic change in the goats after eating the red berries. The name coffee comes
from the Kaffa region of Ethiopia where coffee trees grow wild (). Ethiopia is
considered a major exporter of Arabica coffee beans. Arabica trees grown in the
wild have been known to produce coffee beans for up to thirty years. Whereas the
shrub or small tree also known as Coffea, that grows 15 to 20 feet high, will produce
a mature fruit that looks like a cherry and contains two seeds that is surrounded by a
sweet pulp. In addition, coffee has been cultivated in warm climates

The artifact I selected is a public service announcement from the American Heart
Association. The American Heart Association has produced various health issue
ads and campaigns geared towards educating individuals on health risks,
symptoms, prevention and facts about heart related conditions. In the beginning of
this video, NBA player Paul George is seen playing basketball on a court by
himself reflecting on how his mother s stroke was devastating and sudden. Paul
George then stresses the importance of knowing the signs of a stroke. This is
known as the acronym F.A.S.T., Face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty
and time to call 9 1 1. He desires to make sure that every person is knowledgeable of
these signs so they will be prepared to act fast and possibly save someone s life. I
came across this video while looking up information about heart related issues
caused by high blood pressure. The message delivered in this video has become a
reality for many in our nation. From this video, we learn that early detection is
critical in increasing the stroke survival rate.
The health issue that this artifact discusses is the significance of knowing and
recognizing the warning signs of a stroke. The American Heart Associationhas made
it their mission to provide unlimited health information and research in the hopes of
eliminating cardiovascular diseases as well as helping society in maintaining a
healthy lifestyle. Stroke is the number 5 cause of death and a leading cause of
Business Law Problems
1.What are the four elements of a valid contract? A contract is an agreement between
parties, with terms and conditions that describe the agreement that constitutes a legal
obligation (All Business). A valid contract requires four elements and these are:
a.Mutual agreement В– there must be a meeting of the minds between parties. There
should be an offer and an acceptance. There should be an agreement to enter into the
contract b.Consideration meaning that every party is conferring a benefit on the
other party or himself sustaining a recognizable detriment, such as a reduction of the

Cost of contracting will be lower which will definitely impact businesses. Another
impact of electronic contracting is the impact on government regulations. With the
advent of this new kind of contracting, governments would also have to update their
regulations to adapt to electronic contracting. In order for electronic contracting to
work, the necessary support and infrastructure should also be implemented. There
should be firmer and specific laws to regulate these kinds of transactions. 2.What are
the potential pitfalls you see with electronic contracting? One major pitfall of
electronic contracting is the potential legal impact that can ensure from such
negotiation. Currently, not all states have an electronic contracting law. As such,
these contracts may not be recognized by everybody. Also, the admissibility of
evidence of an electronic record or signature may be unconstitutional; contracting
parties should consider adding clauses expressly providing for the admissibility of the
constituent electronic records (Reid Priest). Another pitfall that could ensure from
electronic contracting is the huge possibility of fraud and mistake which is
minimized in traditional contracts. Also, ecommerce information has the potential of

Comparing Beggar Woman by William King and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew
Marvell Beggar Woman (William King) and To His Coy Mistress (Andrew
Marvell) are two poems written in the 17th century when society was very
different to how it is today: women had no status, rights, or independence. All
aspects of society were male dominated, they ruled, and so all laws and acts were
in the favour of males. The poems are great examples of how society was when they
were written, they also mirror the roles each gender played in the various aspect of
life, the males active and controlling, the women passive, and they had to be
compliant. At the beginning of this poem, there is a description of a gentleman out
hunting, which is an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the man first exchanges with the woman he uses a speak when you re

the woman is made to walk by his side, still wearing the baby. I do not believe it
crosses the mind of the gentleman to offer the woman some help with her burden,
even though it is slowing him from getting what he wants, he will wait, for
principal: he must not be seen to assist, or sympathise with the lower classes in
anyway, even when not in public. It probably also makes him feel big, and he
thinks, makes her feel as if he s in control, a show of supposed power. Conversation
which then follows is suggestive of the woman s profession. Sitting says she s not

physical aspect, I believe because she has neither the income nor the lifestyle to
bring up the child in any kind of security. The Beggar Woman tricks the man into
taking the baby by making every excuse so as to force him to take the baby, if he
wants sex; however she does this not particularly skillfully but the man is under the
illusion he is acting of his own free will. Out of desperation, he says Were the child

The Overcrowding Of The Correctional Facilities
There is a constant struggle in corrections to balance the safety of the public and
achieve rehabilitation of criminal offenders. The greatest threat to maintaining this
balance is the overcrowding of prisons. In 2011, the United States Supreme Court
ruled that massive overcrowding of California prisons violates its prisoner s eighth
amendment right protecting them from cruel and unusual punishment (Boylan, 2015,
p. 558). At the time California s correctional institutions were at double their
capacity, housing over 155, 500 prisoners in only 33 institutions (Specter, 2010, p.
194). The overcrowding of correctional facilities is one of the biggest problems
facing corrections policy makers in the United States. The overcrowding of prisons is

Overcrowding affects nearly every correctional institution in the United States and
Canada. In British Columbia some maximum security institutions are at 200 percent
over capacity. A Saskatchewan ombudsman found that Saskatchewan provincial
facilities are running at double capacity. And in Prince Edward Island, a facility
that was intended to hold 80 prisoners currently holds over 130 inmates (John
Howard Society, 2014). This overcrowding is occurring at the same time that
correctional spending has increase. In five years spending on correctional services
has increased by 17 percent (Kennedy, 2014). The situation of overcrowding in
American and Canadian facilities is so dire that it is having adverse effects on
prisoners and prison staff.
As determined by the United States Supreme Court, prison overcrowding is
extremely detrimental to inmate s physical and mental well being. Thomas McNulty
(2005, p. 494) argues that prison overcrowding has turned facilities into warehouses
where correctional services and rehabilitation are sparse due to lack of resources.
Prisoners in overcrowded prisons have reported experiencing insufficient medical
attention, security, and rehabilitation programs (McNulty, 2005, p. 494).
Furthermore, prison overcrowding places employees of these facilities in unnecessary
danger. Many overcrowded prisons are understaffed, meaning there are less people to
handle growing populations of dangerous offenders. When you put hundreds of men
Wife Of Bath Essay
The Wife of Bath, a modern liberated woman, is one of the more refreshing
characters among some of the pilgrims. Her doctrine on marriage and a woman s
place invokes contempt from some of the devout followers of the Church, namely,
the Parson and Clerk; she s bold and confident, especially for a woman in medieval
times. However, while the Wifeof Bath is a confident and intelligent woman, she is
power hungry and will use whatever means necessary to obtain control; her doctrine
on marriageis reflected in the marriage of the knight and the transformed old
woman in the tale. As seen in the narrator s physical description of her in The
General Prologue, as well as the her self characterization in her prologue, the Wife of
Bath is a bold and
Why Do Rivers Cause Of War
While Rivers initially emphasizes his duty to his country, over the course of the
novel he comes to recognize the destruction his research has caused and continues to
cause on young men. Rivers commitment to his country first appears as Rivers
couldn t agree more with Graves assessment that when you put on the uniform, in
effect you sign a contract to be loyal and fulfill one s duty to their country (23).
While Rivers was expressed his devotion to his country, he recalls an experiment he
performed where the patient stabbed Rivers arm in retaliation for the severe pain
Rivers inflicted upon him. Though Rivers felt distress at the amount of pain he was
causing, he still struggled in his own internal debate between his duty to continue the
experiment and a reluctance to cause pain (47). Rivers anxiety to cause pain
develops as he realizes that by treating men like Sassoon, he enables the British
government to send men back to the source of their traumatic experiences.... Show

Rivers draws parallels between the story of Abraham and that of the British home
front. Abraham enters into the bargain with God as both the young and strong and
old and weak will obey me in exchange for obedience between both ages (149).
Rivers believes that English society is breaking the bargain as the old and weak, does
not care about the destruction of the young and strong on the front lines (149). Rivers
recognizes the irony in British society and realizes he must depart from the duty he
once embraced. In an emotional cry, Rivers exclaims nothing justifies this. Nothing
nothing nothing in relation to the carnage the war has
Analysis Of The Prologue Of The Canterbury Tales

English IV, Sixth Hour
Mr. Adcock

The Religious Vows In The Prologue of The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer
has some religious characters who break the vows they pledge for, to get a place in
the Church. Many characters in the story seem to have an awkward characteristic
that the writer did not notice. Why do the religious characters break the vow? How
do they break it? For example, the monk was a primary part of the church, but as you
keep reading, the characters start to change in ways you could never imagine. Some
character do not interact with each other depending upon their social class level.
The vows that the religious characters break are the Vow of Poverty, the Vow of
Chastity, the Vow of Obedience, and the Vow of Stability. The vow that is probably
the most frequently broken is the Vow of Poverty. According to the Prologue of The
Canterbury Tales, Chaucer says; I saw his sleeves were garnished at the hand/ With
fine grey fur, the finest in the land. / And on his hood, to fasten it at his chin/ He
had a wrought gold cunningly fashioned pin (197 200). As a religious figure, the
monk probably should not be expensively dressed in fine fur or gold jewelry. He is
also showing others that he is rich with all this jewelry. Later Chaucer says, He did
not rate that text at a plucked hen/ Which says that hunters are not holy men (181
182). He ignored the rules of the monk and acted on his. Also he is
The Romance Of The Rose Analysis
The Romance of the Rose was written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris
and Jean de Meun. De Lorris was a French poet that wrote the first section of the
poem, while De Meun was a French author that wrote the second section. After de
Lorris wrote the first section, he died, which lead to de Meun finishing it. Their
parts are related but have many differences. As de Lorris section is very
comprehendible, de Meuns is vaguer and requires more critical thinking. The poem
has created an abundance of arguments surrounding the topic of a women s dignity
and role. These arguments had immense impacts on today s pop culture. The book
developed the notion of lovenot being an emotion, but more of a pose. They did
this by making characteristics, such as Courtesy, Beauty, and Wealthy, as
characters themselves to see how they would act in certain circumstances. This
helps the reader believe that the authors are trying to display how these traits are
treated in real life. The author states, FIer color made her look like a new rosel and
her skin was so tender that one could tear it with a tiny thorn (de Lorris 42), which
helps the reader understand how the characters names will be a big part of the poem
and the moral surrounding it. It also suggests that some women are less fragile, and
harder to pursue than others which is directly related to how people perceive women
outside of the poem. The imagery and descriptions of the narrator s thoughts controls
how the whole poem is
Summary Of Driving To The Funeral By Anna Quindlen
The short story Driving to the Funeral by Anna Quindlen discusses about the
appropriate age to start driving. The author starts out by stating that car crashes are
the No. 1 cause of death among 15 to 20 year olds in this country. Many teenagers
start driving at 16 and that is the reason why the number of car crashes continue to
go up for their age group. Quindlen questions why parents of 16 year olds allow their
kids to start drivingright away without giving it much thought. Their recklessness
only leads to missing countless high school memories that last a lifetime. Teenagers
who start driving early are known to break protocols, which is one of the reasons of
fatal car crashes. One protocol is that they are not allowed to carry more

Sage 50 Accounting Report
Reflection
I have learnt how to use Sage 50; how to recognize and record correct transactions
based on source documents; if HST is required, whether it is HST payable or HST
recoverable; using accounting principles to check each transaction; correcting errors
according to general ledger; I can analyze the difference between balance sheet and
income statement.
To begin with, I have learnt how to use Sage 50 to record transactions, and have
realized the benefits and drawbacks of using this software. As we have each
transaction sheet, we have to recognize the debits and credit account first, and record
the corresponding amount into each account. Then we record the source of the
transaction, date of the transaction and explain each of the entry. ... Show more

After I have record every entry I found that my net income is off 40350 dollars. It
really freaked me out. Then I checked the general ledger, I found after I borrowed
$40000 from bank, it became credit balance. I realized that I must have put the debit
40000 in to the wrong account. Thus, I checked, and it was the exact same error as I
have thought. Secondly, there was still $350 less than expected. I firstly checked
whether I have put the amount into the wrong side or have I missed $350.
Eventually, I found it was not simply just putting into the wrong column, but I have
selected the false account. I chose to debit equipment account instead of the expense
account. Thus, after adjusting these 2 entries, the figures reached the expected

The passion they have for each other, though, overtakes any kind of desire to stay

majority of the narrative in the The Storm implies that testing ones boundaries in
human sexualityis one of the more passionate forms of asserting one s own
independence. This approach greatly contradicts the opposing beliefs of traditional
cultures that have an extreme disapproval of any kind of experimentation or heavy

Being alone with this prior lover, though, brought back that longing for him and it
was stronger than ever before. There was something she had with Alcee that was
not present in her relationship with Bobinot. She loved him, but one thing was
missing that she at the time could not put her finger on. It was passion. The zeal
she shared with Alcee overtook her and she was the first one to initiate the situation
that her and Alcee found themselves in when ... she [Calixta] rolled up a piece of
bagging and Alcee helped her to thrust it beneath the crack (532). As with the rest of
the story, the imagery in this quote is extremely sexual. Calixta knew what she
wanted and she was anything but shy in going out of her way to get it. Alcee may
not have been aware at first, but as he helped her thrust the bagging under the door to
keep out the storm brewing outside, he was also aiding in keeping in the other
obvious storm about to erupt inside.
Alcee started feeling the tension soon enough though and he began noticing every
beautiful physical aspect of Calixta possible. It may not have been intentional, but
Alcee himself did not have the power inside of him to stop it, nor did he even want
to stop it. In describing the way Alcee had started viewing Calixta, Chopin wrote:
Her lips were as red and moist as pomegranate seed. Her white neck and a glimpse of
her full, firm bosom disturbed him powerfully. As she glanced up at him the fear in

disadvantages has been discussed in [28] among them multi terminal, multi infeed or

flexibility and efficiency. In a AC powergrid several DC lines can be connected with
existing AC line in this configuration with additional converters inverters connected

Hemostasis Research Paper
Hemostasis is the process that causes bleeding to stop. It also changes blood from
a liquid to a gel. It consists of three processes, vascular spasm, platelet plug
formation and blood coagulation. Vascular spasm is the first step in heeling in the
wound. Vascular spasm is when the damaged blood vessels constrict due to
tightening of muscle cells on the inside wall. This helps decrease bloodflow, thus
minimizing blood loss. Then plateletplug formation occurs. This is when platelets
adhere to the damaged endothelium and form a plug. Normally platelets do not stick
to the endothelial lining but during an injury collagen is exposed. The exposed
collagen activates the platelets to stick together and form a plug. Once the platelets
are stuck together
Chin A Nation Of Varying Size Dating
Unlike the United States, China has been a nation of varying size dating back over
4,000 years with over 20 different ruling dynasties. Within relatively recent history of
the past 175 years, China has undergone considerable economic shifts including a
heavy communist push. Many times, the causation for these events was war. This
idea was seen numerous times in ancient China; for example, the Ming treasure ships
that were sent out for monetary and military conquest were a result of a naval and
military dominance in the Eastern Hemisphere, which allowed them to gain new
countries as tributaries with ease. Although these ships were successful in their
missions, they eventually had to destroy the ships to offset the large cost of the

Prior to 1810 Western nations had been spending 350 million Mexican silver
dollars on porcelain, cotton, silks, brocades, and various grades of tea, by 1837
opium represented 57 percent of Chinese imports, and for the fiscal period 1835
36 alone China exported 4.5 million silver dollars (England and China: The Opium
Wars, 1839 60). This demonstrates how the illegal opium trade largely imbalanced
the trade with the West. It was estimated that between four and twelve million
Chinese males under the age of 40 were addicted to the use of opium. Tensions grew
rapidly following the Kowloon Incident, where drunk British sailors from several
opium clipper ships rioted in Kowloon, killing a Chinese man and vandalizing a
Buddhist temple (The First and Second Opium Wars). Lin Ze xu, the Emperor s
special emissary, ordered the seizure of opium and closing of ports. In response, the
British superintendent of trade, Charles Elliot, ordered the blockade of Pearl River,
thus initiating the war. Economically, China cut off trade with Britain and the
Western nations. This reinforces the idea that they were an isolationist country with
respect to trading with the West.
The first Opium War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Nanking on August 29,
1842. Some of the most important economic parts of the treaty included, Ceding the
island of Hong Kong to Great Britain, opened five Treaty ports to Western trade and
residence, and paid nine million dollars in reparations to the
The Pomegranate
Eavan Boland s poem The Pomegranate utilizes the intricacies of the Greek myth of
Persephone and elegantly intertwines the story to detail the bond of daughter and
mother and the cyclical journey from daughter to mother. The myth of Persephone
deeply resonates within Boland due to the versatility and impactful meaning of the
story. Which in turn gives the poem a ambivalent and bittersweet emotional narrative
with a reflective tone. Boland immediately manipulates the cyclical essence of the
poem through juxtaposing the little girl in the myth, Persephone, to the little girl
reading the poem, the narrator. The author does this by seemingly mixing the two
together as displayed in the following lines, I can enter it anywhere and have. As a...

As the narrator progresses through motherhood Boland symbolizes the end of the
mother s journey with winter which is associated with cold, harsh, barren, and grey
conditions. The metonymy of wrapping a complex thought, such as the conclusion
of motherhood, with the word, winter, is made more powerful. Ultimately, Bolands
use of winter and its imagery allows the reader to understand the pain and
desperation of a mother letting her child lose into the world. The idea of the
inevitability of the cycle of life is further pushed by the core motif of the
pomegranate. In the myth of Demeter and Persephone the pomegranate exemplifies
temptation, procreation, and evil. Boland takes advantage of the connotation of the
pomegranate established by the myth through the juxtaposition of the pomegranate
with modern day representations of adulthood such as, her teen magazines, her can of
coke, and her plate of uncut fruit. The pomegranate. This quotation demonstrates
Boland s intention to illustrate the child s desire to grow despite what the mother
may feel. This is further supported by the line, a child can be hungary. I could warn
her. There is still a chance. The quotation supports the idea that I child will hunger to
become an adult regardless of the implications. Which leads the mother to come to
terms with her daughter beginning the journey into, ultimately,
Social Life In Hamlet s View On Suicide
Moreover, in Hamlet, Hamlet s decision on suicide is impacted by the view of
society during his time. The social life in Hamlet is based on a Christian lifestyle
and around the church. Due to everyday life being based on the church, suicide is
greatly looked down upon in the society. On page 253, Act Five, Scene One, lines
244 and 245 when the Doctor says, No more be done. We should profane the service
of the dead... The Doctor is saying that he can do nothing more for Ophelia s death
and that it needs to be profaned, which means to treat her death secular rather than
religious because she has committed suicideand that is against the bible and their
society. Societies view of suicide can be found on page 241, Act Five, Scene One,
lines twenty seven to thirty when the Gravedigger says, Why thou sayst. And the
more pity that great folk should have count nance in this world to drown or hang
themselves more than their even Christian. The Gravedigger is saying that it is
not fair to the rest of the Christians that Ophelia gets a proper Christian burial as a
response to Other because he is talking about that since Ophelia is rich she gets a
proper Christian burial and if she is poor she would not have gotten that because
she committed suicide. This shows that the rich in their society receive benefits
that the poor do not get, even when it comes to tragic things such as suicide, yet, as
mentioned previously the Doctor could not do much for her because suicide is so
badly looked upon. Ultimately the view societal view of suicide effects Hamlets
choice to not commit suicide because society is extremely religious. On page

pointless and unprofitable to him. To Hamlet, suicide seems like a desirable
alternative to life in a painful world, but Hamlet feels that the option of suicide is
closed to him because it is forbidden by religion and society, so he does not commit it.

ABSTRACT
Watermarking is the process of embedding new data into image, audio or video.
Digital Watermarking technique is used to hide a secret or personal message to
protect a products copyright or to demonstrate data integrity. To provide double
protection, after the watermarking process, the watermarked image tends to go
through an encryption process using CHAKRA symmetry key encryption algorithm
which encrypts the data with the concepts of Cartesian coordinate geometry and
circle generation. In this paper, we perform watermarking on different types of
images like BMP, JPEGetc.., and the input image is pre processed and converted
into JPEG LS format which contains enhanced quality.

Racial Tension In Do The Right Thing
In the finals scenes of Do the Right Thing, there is a bountiful amount of escalating
conflict that leads to Mookie s ultimate decision to throw a metal garbage can
through the shop window of Sal s pizzeria, which in turn leads to the entire
neighborhood in uproar over the racial tension that is established throughout the rest

the neighborhood (specifically the non white members). Mookie throws the garbage
bag away on the floor so that can carry the empty can to the front window and throw
it inside. The neighborhood reacts by charging in through the broken window and the

Matthew And John s Gospel
Jesus is the central figure of Christianity. He was born in Bethlehem, Israel, about
2,000 years ago, and at the age of 30, He began His ministry which lasted 3 1/2
years. He gathered 12 disciples who followed Him throughout Israel as He went
around teaching and performing miracles. Eventually His popularity and His views,
which conflicted with the legalistic Jewish leaders of the time.
The story of Jesus as Christians know and tell it, comes from that part of the Bible
called the New Testament. The first four books Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are
known as the gospels, meaning good news. They were all written between about
70 and 100 CE, about two generations after the death of Jesus, and are based on
stories of Jesus, told and retold by his followers. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are
called the synoptic gospels, because they present a common view of Jesus through
many common sayings, parables, and events. Both Matthew and Luke seem to have
used Mark s gospel in writing their own accounts. ... Show more content on

The gospels come out of early communities still struggling with their identity in a
Jewish context. The Gospel of Matthew, for instance, is most conscious of the debates
within Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. Although the gospels
differ in their accounts of Jesus life and ministry, sometimes in significant ways, the
early church did not blend them into one account, but preserved these four gospels,
with their differences. Together they provide four views of the life and teachings of
Effects Of Political Corruption In Nigeria
Political corruption is a significant problem in Africa. Many of the regions in
Africa were seeking for independence from European nations that had caused for
political views to differ. The ideas of leaders were not all similar which may have
created a majority of these countries in Africa to express their feelings and form
their own political parties. Besides wanting to be freed from European rule, the rise
of political corruption could also be faulted to the African leaders of different regions

The transformation of politics in Nigeria fell into the trap of military rule that caused
for chaos to occur across the country. Colonial chiefs were taking positions in
office which they were not qualified for and used force and bribery to win over the
people of Nigeria. The idea that Nigeria was being set up in this form of
government was misleading and did not let the people feel as though they were
independent. Regional leaders were seeking to take over local politics of this
country and were able to do so when it came to the national and local elections.
When Nigeria, revamped their constitution in the 1950s, which divided Nigeria into
three different regions caused a fight to see who would control the political party.
Nigeria located in West Africa is made up of three separate cultures in the area that
lead to disunity and issues with the government. The Hausa Fulani in the north, the
Yoruba in the west, and Ibo in the east. Amongst these cultures, they started to form
their political parties. There was the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons,
the Action Group and Northern People s Congress. The British should be held
responsible for encouraging these groups to compete against one another. The British
were responsible for favoring other political parties over others that would help create
cockiness to development in the long run. The British mostly supported the N.C.N.C

Bariatrics as a Discourse Community
Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on the causes, prevention, and
treatment of obesity ( Medical Dictionary, 2015). Bariatric surgeryis a specific
discourse community connecting individuals through mutual interests, shared
knowledge, and expertise of treating obese populations. The field of bariatric surgery
is a discourse community with several purposes. It encourages innovative surgical
and nonsurgical solutions in obesity care. It formulates hypotheses and develops and
conducts experimental designs to test the hypotheses reliability and validity.
Furthermore, it aims to stimulate discussion about its findings. Scientists,
researchers, medical professionals, and other experts in the field of bariatric
surgery submit their findings and must go through professional gatekeeping
measures like peer review before their work can be published. Once their findings
are published, they can be accessed in peer reviewed journals, magazines, articles,
and scientific databases. One example of a publication in the field of Bariatrics is,
The Journal of Obesity and Bariatrics, which is an online international journal,
published by the Avens Publishing Group, or APG for short. This journal was
published on August. 9 2013, and is composed of many scientific and scholarly
research articles about obesity treatment. The Avens
Social Rules For Dating
The social rules for dating have drastically changed over the years. In today s
society, dating has lost all of its meaning and has been overruled by the term hooking
up . Social media and texting have taken over the means of communicating face to
face and made our generation socially awkward. Since the arrival of new technologies
and the changing definitions of traditional dating, dating has become a more loosely
used term. According to The History of Dating , between the timeframe of 1900 and
1910 was the start of the dating era. As mentioned in the History of Dating, men
would address young women, who they were interested in, by stopping by their
house for a visit. The parents of the woman would oversee the couple s visitation and

media simultaneously become an integrated part of society, not to mention the
existence of new media like the Internet. In fact, this integration of Internet into our

wrongdoings of government and private enterprises (Gunnell, 2011, p. 32 ) is
believed has transformed the ideas of global communication process.
Related to that, this essay is written as an effort to comprehend the role of
individual in globalized world, especially by studying the case of Julian Assange
and Wikileaks. This essay is divided in three parts. The first part of this essay
explains background as well as global controversy surrounding Wikileaks and its
spokesman, Julian Assange. The second part identifies the areas that Assange have
directly impacted, especially in terms of participation, journalism practice and
privacy. Finally, the last part of this essay reflects on Assange s role in the
globalized media economy, particularly drawing on his background as an Australian
as well as the position of Australia in global economy.

the labeling on her body like she an animal, the statement Peta made saying All

Similarities Between Zombieland And Shaun Of The Dead
Horror and Comedy have both been genres that stray very far from one another. In
the last few years, many movies have starting appearing that combine the two, into
a subgenre called comedy horror. Two films in particular that use this subgenre are
Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. Zombieland is a film focusing on a young
guy called Columbus who is in search for his family, and meets a few people along
the way through the zombie apocalypse. Shaun of the Dead focuses on a middle
aged man called Shaun who lives a boring life and is now faced with the zombie
apocalypse and losing his girlfriend. This essay will explore the similarities and
differences between these two films.
The first film of this essay is Zombieland by Ruben Fleischer, this film focuses on
the adventures of an awkward and quirky guy called Columbus as he tries to get
back to his parents while surviving the zombie apocalypse.
The purpose of this film is the purpose that any big hollywood film has, which is to
make money for the crew that created it, and to entertain viewers of the film. The
audience of this film would most likely be people who are in their late teens and
over. This is because of the nature of the film, it s quite graphic and could be too
much for people who are younger than this. There are several scenes in which
zombies are seen eating people, and are also seen being shot, both of which are
extremely graphic and could be found as quite disturbing.
A comedy horror film such as Zombieland or
Wonder Woman And Superman
The most famous heroine of all time, says DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman has
it all, from beauty to brains to brawn. She was known as Diana, the Princess of the
Amazons, before she became known as Wonder Woman. She is similar to male
superheroes, such as Superman, in many ways, but there are definitely differences.
I think we can all agree that the most obvious difference is Wonder Woman is a
girl. She teaches love, and she fights for peace. She doesn t fight unless it is
necessary. She stands for feminism and represents an evolving female. Wonder
Woman was the Princess of the Amazons. She was born and raised on what is
known as Paradise Island. This is where she learned how to fight like a warrior. She
received her powers from the Greek gods. Once she received the powers, she
decided to go to America to help fight against the criminals and villains in the world.
Supermanwas from a planet called Krypton. His dad sent him to Earth on a rocket
ship in order to save him from the attack on their planet. Upon arriving to Earth,
Superman gained power after absorbing the yellow sun rays. As his powers grew
stronger, he started to utilize them in a positive way. All superheroes have super
abilities. Some of the abilities Wonder Woman and Superman have in common are
super strength, super speed, durability, healing power, stamina, and enhanced senses.
They can anticipate the next move of their enemy. Although many superheroes also
share these basic capabilities, they have

Medieval World Syllabus Essay
The syllabus in correspondence with The Medieval World demonstrates a clear
understanding of course expectations and assignments. The student guideline
identifies a variety of assigned course work, outlines the material that will be
discussed in class, and allows the students to develop their own scholarly interests
and goals for the year. The assignments explained within the syllabus include a hand
drawn map of Europe where students are required to label geographic places and
features that are influential in the Middle Ages. In addition, students will be required
to submit note annotations based on primary and secondary sources. The primary
source criteria will instruct students to summarize the text with the identification of
details it contains. Students will also need to provide the historical significance of the
primary source, connecting the text to a larger picture. The secondary source criteria
direct students to structure pages of notes in a template comprised of significant

Write An Essay On The Rideau Canal
The Rideau Canal is the oldest continuously operating canal in North America;
operated today much as they were in 1832 1834 when they first opened. Maintained
by Parks Canada and their lock staff. Becoming employed on the Rideau Canal is a
fantastic opportunity whether you are a lockmaster, canalman, or a student; for each
of these positions you have to complete a test varying in difficulty the higher the
positon is.
To be a student the only requirement other than passing the test in the interview is to
be a full time student; whether that be high school or college/university. I myself have
the privilege of being a student on the canal over the summer and there is nothing I
would rather be doing with my summers; as long as I m an exceptional employee I

Macbeth Tragic Hero Research Paper
A tragic hero is a protagonist, usually of noble birth or high standing, who brings
about his own downfall by a choice brought on by a character flaw. Tragic heroes
learn from their mistakes and stand up to their fears no matter the consequences.
Many novels, such as Macbeth, have a tragic hero. Some may argue if Macbeth is a
tragic heroor not. However, he is in many ways. Some may see Macbeth as a villain
due to his vile actions but he is, in fact, a tragic hero. Macbeth fulfills the

  • 4. The Jackhammer Syndrome Poem Analysis Society s conventions teach that immoderate desires are unappealing manifestations of basal instincts that individuals must learn to control. However, a certain sense of liberating freedom is also attached to the idea of living in uninhibited by the guidelines that society imposes. The Jackhammer Syndrome , a poem by Al Purdy, and Susan Orlean s The Orchid Thief present two different narratives concerning the pursuit of personal desire and deal with the consequences that ensue from this behavior. Their characters experiences suggest that the unchecked pursuit of personal desires, at the expense of conformity within society, does not produce lasting gratification. The Jackhammer Syndrome is narrated by an individual who recounts various memorable events in his life. He mentions such instances as hide and seek and run sheep run/in my old hometown/where the kid was pretty funny and swimming across a river meeting a girl halfway/along the wet footpath and going/on together to the other/side for an hour doing/nothing dizzily balanced in the moment. These memories, which seem ordinary and pleasant, are described by the narrator in a way that causes the reader to question his true feelings towards them. Throughout the entire poem, the author does not use a single mark of punctuation, dividing thoughts according to verse instead. However, the more the narrator reminisces, the less coherent the verses become, combining multiple ideas that lack an obvious connection. These
  • 5. Essay on On Roman Military Matters by Vegetius On Roman Military Matters, commonly referred to as De Re Militari, by Flavius Vegetius Renatus is essentially a field manual focusing on Roman military organization and how to field an army in a time of war. Vegetius discusses not only the development of the Roman soldier, from recruitment to final training, but also the organization, weaponry, strategy and tactics employed by the Romans legions. Though Vegetius, through evidence, had no military background or experience, and it is unclear on what evidence he based his argument, he accurately and in great detail described the structure of the Military of the late Roman Empire. If the recruit failed the examination, a ceremony that Vegetius fails to describe, a better candidate would replace them. Initial training, according to the author, consisted of marching, running, jumping and swimming. Vegetius placed great importance on what seem like basic human actions and believed that those skills were essential in the development of a fit soldier. Following the initial training, levies were outfitted and trained on the use of the primary Roman weaponry, the short sword, javelins, bow, sling, and introduced to the wear of the requisite Roman armor. Vegetius concluded with the subsequent training of the soldiers in order to sustain their level of readiness. The author contended that his purpose for Book I was to point out methods required to field a good and serviceable army and discussed that some nations lost their sense of military discipline and that fact caused their downfall on the battlefield. In Book II The Organization of the Legion, Vegetius described the composition of the Roman legions. He began with the explanation of the differences between legions and auxiliaries, legions being Romans and auxiliaries being drawn from barbarians. Here, Vegetius discussed the decay of the legion and stated that it was up to the eEmperor to restore the Roman army to greatness, a

The theatrical production for which this costume design concept originated, transpired in 1939; however, the image itself was drawn in 1923. The design of the suit coat, pants, and hat are all a simple checkerboard pattern with alternating white and black squares with each white space having a dollar sign inside of it. The man seems to be of a fairly white complexion suggesting that the man to play this role in the playwas white. In itself, the image, is simple with minimal shading, a small shadow of the man and a blank background. The production for which this costume design was made was titled Better Times and told the story of a small town facing economically adversity as a result of the introduction of a charging tax hike. Ultimately, the citizens of the suburban area united as a community to help each other repay debts, fines and taxes to finally negotiate with the man in the money suit. The man in the money suit was a government agent in charge of collecting debts. Comparing Beggar Woman by William King and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell Beggar Woman (William King) and To His Coy Mistress (Andrew Marvell) are two poems written in the 17th century when society was very different to how it is today: women had no status, rights, or independence. All aspects of society were male dominated, they ruled, and so all laws and acts were in the favour of males. The poems are great examples of how society was when they were written, they also mirror the roles each gender played in the various aspect of life, the males active and controlling, the women passive, and they had to be compliant. • 14. The Overcrowding Of The Correctional Facilities There is a constant struggle in corrections to balance the safety of the public and achieve rehabilitation of criminal offenders. The greatest threat to maintaining this balance is the overcrowding of prisons. In 2011, the United States Supreme Court ruled that massive overcrowding of California prisons violates its prisoner s eighth amendment right protecting them from cruel and unusual punishment (Boylan, 2015, p. 558). At the time California s correctional institutions were at double their capacity, housing over 155, 500 prisoners in only 33 institutions (Specter, 2010, p. 194). The overcrowding of correctional facilities is one of the biggest problems facing corrections policy makers in the United States. The overcrowding of prisons is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overcrowding affects nearly every correctional institution in the United States and Canada. In British Columbia some maximum security institutions are at 200 percent over capacity. A Saskatchewan ombudsman found that Saskatchewan provincial facilities are running at double capacity. And in Prince Edward Island, a facility that was intended to hold 80 prisoners currently holds over 130 inmates (John Howard Society, 2014). This overcrowding is occurring at the same time that correctional spending has increase. In five years spending on correctional services has increased by 17 percent (Kennedy, 2014). The situation of overcrowding in American and Canadian facilities is so dire that it is having adverse effects on prisoners and prison staff. As determined by the United States Supreme Court, prison overcrowding is extremely detrimental to inmate s physical and mental well being. Thomas McNulty (2005, p. 494) argues that prison overcrowding has turned facilities into warehouses where correctional services and rehabilitation are sparse due to lack of resources. Prisoners in overcrowded prisons have reported experiencing insufficient medical attention, security, and rehabilitation programs (McNulty, 2005, p. 494). Furthermore, prison overcrowding places employees of these facilities in unnecessary danger. Many overcrowded prisons are understaffed, meaning there are less people to handle growing populations of dangerous offenders. When you put hundreds of men

While Rivers was expressed his devotion to his country, he recalls an experiment he performed where the patient stabbed Rivers arm in retaliation for the severe pain Rivers inflicted upon him. Though Rivers felt distress at the amount of pain he was causing, he still struggled in his own internal debate between his duty to continue the experiment and a reluctance to cause pain (47). Analysis Of The Prologue Of The Canterbury Tales Bhakta, Karan English IV, Sixth Hour Mr. Adcock 8 December 2015 The Religious Vows In The Prologue of The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer has some religious characters who break the vows they pledge for, to get a place in the Church. Many characters in the story seem to have an awkward characteristic that the writer did not notice. Why do the religious characters break the vow? How do they break it? For example, the monk was a primary part of the church, but as you keep reading, the characters start to change in ways you could never imagine. Some character do not interact with each other depending upon their social class level. The vows that the religious characters break are the Vow of Poverty, the Vow of Chastity, the Vow of Obedience, and the Vow of Stability. The vow that is probably the most frequently broken is the Vow of Poverty. According to the Prologue of The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer says; I saw his sleeves were garnished at the hand/ With fine grey fur, the finest in the land. / And on his hood, to fasten it at his chin/ He had a wrought gold cunningly fashioned pin (197 200). As a religious figure, the monk probably should not be expensively dressed in fine fur or gold jewelry. He is also showing others that he is rich with all this jewelry. • 18. The Romance Of The Rose Analysis The Romance of the Rose was written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. De Lorris was a French poet that wrote the first section of the poem, while De Meun was a French author that wrote the second section. After de Lorris wrote the first section, he died, which lead to de Meun finishing it. Their parts are related but have many differences. As de Lorris section is very comprehendible, de Meuns is vaguer and requires more critical thinking. The poem has created an abundance of arguments surrounding the topic of a women s dignity and role. These arguments had immense impacts on today s pop culture. The book developed the notion of lovenot being an emotion, but more of a pose. They did this by making characteristics, such as Courtesy, Beauty, and Wealthy, as characters themselves to see how they would act in certain circumstances. This helps the reader believe that the authors are trying to display how these traits are treated in real life. The author states, FIer color made her look like a new rosel and her skin was so tender that one could tear it with a tiny thorn (de Lorris 42), which helps the reader understand how the characters names will be a big part of the poem and the moral surrounding it. It also suggests that some women are less fragile, and harder to pursue than others which is directly related to how people perceive women outside of the poem. The imagery and descriptions of the narrator s thoughts controls how the whole poem is

Sage 50 Accounting Report Reflection I have learnt how to use Sage 50; how to recognize and record correct transactions based on source documents; if HST is required, whether it is HST payable or HST recoverable; using accounting principles to check each transaction; correcting errors according to general ledger; I can analyze the difference between balance sheet and income statement. To begin with, I have learnt how to use Sage 50 to record transactions, and have realized the benefits and drawbacks of using this software. As we have each transaction sheet, we have to recognize the debits and credit account first, and record the corresponding amount into each account. After I have record every entry I found that my net income is off 40350 dollars. It really freaked me out. Then I checked the general ledger, I found after I borrowed $40000 from bank, it became credit balance. I realized that I must have put the debit 40000 in to the wrong account. Thus, I checked, and it was the exact same error as I have thought. Secondly, there was still $350 less than expected. I firstly checked whether I have put the amount into the wrong side or have I missed $350. Eventually, I found it was not simply just putting into the wrong column, but I have selected the false account. I chose to debit equipment account instead of the expense account. Thus, after adjusting these 2 entries, the figures reached the expected

It was passion. • 29. Hemostasis Research Paper Hemostasis is the process that causes bleeding to stop. It also changes blood from a liquid to a gel. It consists of three processes, vascular spasm, platelet plug formation and blood coagulation. Vascular spasm is the first step in heeling in the wound. Vascular spasm is when the damaged blood vessels constrict due to tightening of muscle cells on the inside wall. This helps decrease bloodflow, thus minimizing blood loss. Then plateletplug formation occurs. This is when platelets adhere to the damaged endothelium and form a plug. Normally platelets do not stick to the endothelial lining but during an injury collagen is exposed. The exposed collagen activates the platelets to stick together and form a plug. Once the platelets are stuck together

This demonstrates how the illegal opium trade largely imbalanced the trade with the West. It was estimated that between four and twelve million Chinese males under the age of 40 were addicted to the use of opium. Tensions grew rapidly following the Kowloon Incident, where drunk British sailors from several opium clipper ships rioted in Kowloon, killing a Chinese man and vandalizing a Buddhist temple (The First and Second Opium Wars). Lin Ze xu, the Emperor s special emissary, ordered the seizure of opium and closing of ports. In response, the British superintendent of trade, Charles Elliot, ordered the blockade of Pearl River, thus initiating the war. Economically, China cut off trade with Britain and the Western nations. This reinforces the idea that they were an isolationist country with respect to trading with the West. The first Opium War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Nanking on August 29, 1842. Some of the most important economic parts of the treaty included, Ceding the island of Hong Kong to Great Britain, opened five Treaty ports to Western trade and residence, and paid nine million dollars in reparations to the

The Pomegranate Eavan Boland s poem The Pomegranate utilizes the intricacies of the Greek myth of Persephone and elegantly intertwines the story to detail the bond of daughter and mother and the cyclical journey from daughter to mother. The myth of Persephone deeply resonates within Boland due to the versatility and impactful meaning of the story. Which in turn gives the poem a ambivalent and bittersweet emotional narrative with a reflective tone. Boland immediately manipulates the cyclical essence of the poem through juxtaposing the little girl in the myth, Persephone, to the little girl reading the poem, the narrator. The author does this by seemingly mixing the two together as displayed in the following lines, I can enter it anywhere and have. As a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the narrator progresses through motherhood Boland symbolizes the end of the mother s journey with winter which is associated with cold, harsh, barren, and grey conditions. The metonymy of wrapping a complex thought, such as the conclusion of motherhood, with the word, winter, is made more powerful. Ultimately, Bolands use of winter and its imagery allows the reader to understand the pain and desperation of a mother letting her child lose into the world. The idea of the inevitability of the cycle of life is further pushed by the core motif of the pomegranate. In the myth of Demeter and Persephone the pomegranate exemplifies temptation, procreation, and evil. Boland takes advantage of the connotation of the pomegranate established by the myth through the juxtaposition of the pomegranate with modern day representations of adulthood such as, her teen magazines, her can of coke, and her plate of uncut fruit. The pomegranate. This quotation demonstrates Boland s intention to illustrate the child s desire to grow despite what the mother may feel. This is further supported by the line, a child can be hungary. I could warn her. There is still a chance. The quotation supports the idea that I child will hunger to become an adult regardless of the implications. Which leads the mother to come to terms with her daughter beginning the journey into, ultimately,

The social life in Hamlet is based on a Christian lifestyle and around the church. Due to everyday life being based on the church, suicide is greatly looked down upon in the society. On page 253, Act Five, Scene One, lines 244 and 245 when the Doctor says, No more be done. We should profane the service of the dead... The Gravedigger is saying that it is not fair to the rest of the Christians that Ophelia gets a proper Christian burial as a response to Other because he is talking about that since Ophelia is rich she gets a proper Christian burial and if she is poor she would not have gotten that because she committed suicide. This shows that the rich in their society receive benefits that the poor do not get, even when it comes to tragic things such as suicide, yet, as mentioned previously the Doctor could not do much for her because suicide is so badly looked upon.
