Q: Your book is all about the retirement and financial planning secrets of millionaires. How are the
secrets of millionaires useful to ordinary people?
Jim Trippon: One of the things I discovered while researching this book is just how many
millionaires there are in America. About seven million millionaires nationwide! That
demonstrates to me just how many people have achieved success in today’s economy. I believe
that success leaves a trail of clues and I want to show you how to find those clues and apply
them in your own life.
Q: Your new book, Stay Rich Forever is sharply critical of a number of popular financial books already
on the market. What is wrong with them?
Jim Trippon: I think it is absolutely foolish to suggest spending down one’s principal. Books
such as “Die Broke” do a terrible disservice to readers with that kind of advice. It is impossible
to predict when one will die and people are living much longer than ever before. It’s also
impossible to predict what most investments will earn. If you can’t predict that kind of
information accurately it is clearly impossible to plan on spending every last penny and dying at
exactly the right time as these books suggest. The consequences of making a wrong prediction
could be financially ruinous. That’s why that kind of book is so terribly dangerous to retirees.
Better advice for readers is absolutely essential.
Q: Why should viewers/listeners/readers take your advice over that of other financial authors?
Jim Trippon: I believe in giving practical, useful and responsible advice. I believe you don’t
have to be a millionaire to learn from one. Successful people have a lot to teach all of us. I have
researched the habits of 1,000 millionaires over the past 20 years. I have advised many of the
millionaires interviewed in this book and I believe they have a lot more real world experience to
offer readers than most financial pundits.

Q: How much money do people need to retire?
Jim Trippon: I have a simple formula: You will find you have enough money for retirement
when, on an “inflation adjusted basis"; you can maintain the lifestyle you want to live without
invading your investment principal. If living the life you want means spending down your
principal, then you aren’t financially ready for retirement. Once again, don’t forget to factor in
inflation when you calculate your income needs.
Q: F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote: “The rich are different from you and me.” You’ve interviewed and
worked with 1,000 millionaires, how are they different from the average person?
Jim Trippon: I tell the stories of many millionaires in my book and the surprising thing I found
is that 80 percent of millionaires are self-made. That means they don’t start out any different
from the average person. They make themselves different; they build different lives by using a
wide variety of practical techniques that anyone can adopt.
Q: Can ordinary people really learn anything from millionaires? Give me an example of practical
money-saving techniques anyone can use.
Jim Trippon: Many of the “millionaire techniques” that I describe are all about saving money.
Millionaires do a lot of things to hold on to their money such as comparison shopping for
everything through the Internet, doing energy audits to save 35 percent on electric bills,
financing their cars through low interest home equity loans, using cell phones with nationwide
free long distance, splitting prescriptions and raising insurance deductibles. Saving a dollar is
even better than earning one. After all, there’s no tax bite on money you save.
Q: In your book, you write about using “tax loopholes” to increase income. Is that dangerous in any
way?
Jim Trippon: I strongly recommend arranging one’s finances to take advantage of every
available tax benefit. I absolutely do not recommend tax evasion. That would be illegal. But I do
strongly advocate “tax avoidance”…avoiding taxes on every penny of income that the law
allows. The average person is unaware of the many ways that tax burdens can be eliminated
using new and sophisticated planning techniques. But millionaires make it a point to find out,
with the help of experts, how to cut taxes.

Q: Everyone would like to become a millionaire, but unless we have huge salaries, it’s going to take
more than money-saving techniques to reach that goal. Is there an investment strategy that will help us
get there?
Jim Trippon: There are many sound investment strategies and I wouldn’t suggest a “one size
fits all” strategy to your readers/listeners/viewers. I certainly don’t believe in get-rich-quick
investment schemes. In fact, one of the most important ways to “Stay Rich Forever” is to avoid
the many scams that promise instant wealth. After all of the financial disasters and scandals on
the stock market, I hope we’ve all learned to be a little more careful with our money. I find that
millionaires tend to be careful people, not gamblers. I also suggest ways to hire a good financial
advisor who should be able to keep you away from the most dangerous investment strategies.
Q: One of the worst things that could happen to any retiree is to run out of money. Does that happen
often and why?
Jim Trippon: You’re right. It’s a serious danger because few retirees have the option to go back
to work and earn more money. Sometimes a nest egg can be lost because of a catastrophic
event. More often, financial disaster happens in ways that can be avoided…ways that include
bad investment decisions, poor tax planning and the failure to make some crucial decisions on
retirement day. Important financial problems can also arise from second marriages. These are
things that anyone, whether or not they are a millionaire, can take specific action to prevent.
Q: Do millionaires ever stop worrying about money?
Jim Trippon: You might think that millionaires have other things to worry about but my
research shows that’s not the case. I find that their number one worry is about running out of
money even if they have millions in the bank. They also spend a lot of time thinking about
managing their investments. And, number three on their list of concerns is avoiding taxes.
Getting rich is all about being careful with money and staying rich clearly means remaining
vigilant. That’s one of the key lessons I learned from my survey of millionaires.
Q: How much debt is acceptable?
Jim Trippon: Prior to retirement, debt for home ownership can still be a good investment.
Certainly a small amount of debt can help a small business owner get established. But I
have never seen a consumer loan that is beneficial to a retiree. It is imperative to
eliminate every bit of debt before retiring.

How to Prepare For a Two-Year
Countdown to Retirement
“If you are getting ready to retire, you need to follow a timetable and begin preparations
up to two years in advance,” advises Jim Trippon, CPA, and author of the newly
published Stay Rich Forever. Use this as a checklist for counting down to retirement.
24 months prior to your retirement, you should do the following:
 Build a sustainable budget
 Review your debt plan
 Interview investment advisors
12-18 months prior to your retirement, you should do the following:
 18 months prior: Hire investment advisor for at least 25 percent of your
portfolio
 18 months prior: Develop an investment policy statement
 13 months prior: Acquire a written copy of company benefits policies
 12 months prior: Begin tax planning with CPA
6-9 months prior to your retirement, you should do the following:
 9 months prior: Re-evaluate investment advisor with respect to your goals
 8 months prior: Complete your advisor team
 6 months prior: Accumulate company retirement forms
 6 months prior: Go through underwriting if you are considering additional
life or health insurance
3 months or fewer prior to your retirement, you should do the following:
 3 months prior: Review rules for company stock options with CPA &

 2 months prior: Open rollover IRA

Ten Reasons Why You Need an Investment
Transition Plan For Cases of Illness or Incapacity
If you were too ill to manage your investments, who would do it for you? Your spouse? Your
children? Are you sure? "A commonly overlooked issue in retirement planning is that of having a
seamless transition plan in place for the management of your investments in case of your illness
or incapacity," says Jim Trippon, CPA, author of Stay Rich Forever.
If you become so ill that you are incapacitated one of three things will happen:
1. You will have a properly written and executed power of attorney for a person you pre-
designated to take over the management of your financial affairs, OR
2. You will have a properly written and executed living trust agreement for a co-trustee or
successor trustee you designated to take over management, OR
3. A judge will take control of all your assets and funds and will appoint a guardian to
manage your affairs. This guardian may be someone you know (such as your spouse) or
it may be someone you have never met.
Here are 10 reasons to make sure your investment plan will be carried out if you become ill or
incapacitated:
1. You lose control of how your money will be managed without a plan.
2. Lacking a plan may create substantial personal and financial stress on your family.
3. Without a plan, your accounts might be frozen while court proceedings decide who will
manage them.
4. If you don't have a plan, your family may not even know where to locate all of your
assets, at the time you need them the most, to cover your healthcare costs.
5. Without a plan, your guardian may dispose of your best investments and put the money
into something safe like a non-interest-bearing checking account.
6. Your income taxes may skyrocket when your portfolio is restructured if you lack a plan.
7. Without a plan, a court appointed guardian may end up in charge of all your worldly
possessions.
8. Your assets, absent a plan, may be depleted from the charges a court appointed
guardian levies to manage your financial affairs.
9. Without a plan, you eliminate the possibility of naming one of your family members or
trusted friends to manage your assets the way you want them handled.
10.If you lack a plan, it will be too late to explain how you want your assets managed
because by definition you are incapacitated and therefore unable to do so.
"Most potential clients I meet assume that if they become ill, a family member will be able to
step right in and take over management of their investment portfolio," says Trippon, "The reason
for this erroneous belief is that it sounds like a reasonable and practical solution. Unfortunately,
unless you have taken specific steps to document and record these wishes, it is more likely that
your assets will end up in a passbook savings account controlled by a court, or worse yet,
controlled by a guardian chosen by your local judge, who will be billing your account regularly
for his 'management fees’."

How to Find The
Right Investment Advisor

Choosing an investment advisor is one if the most important steps you will take as you get your
financial house in order. An investment advisor will help you set goals, including the age at
which you want to retire and choosing the funds required to get there. They are responsible for
filtering through the endless stream of financial products available and evaluating which ones
will enhance your personal situation.
Your main priority should be finding an investment advisor you are comfortable with. Does he
or she meet both your immediate and future needs? The first thing to consider is the education
and reputation of the advisor. What are the advisor’s credentials? How long has he or she been
in business? What experience does the company have, especially with people in your
circumstances? Where did the advisor go to school? What is the advisor’s recent employment
history? What licenses are held? Is the advisor and the company registered with the SEC, with
your state, and the NASD?
Before interviewing advisors, develop specific questions related to your financial goals and your
own personal style. Are you looking for a partner in managing your investments, or are you
willing to provide the advisor with control? Do you have any social or political beliefs that will
need to be considered in establishing your goals and selecting an advisor? Remember to look
for a teacher and not a salesman. You want someone who is willing to explain the financial
buzzwords, not just dazzle you with them.
Ask the advisor:
 Will you receive an annual review of your strategy or portfolio evaluation?
 How often should you meet?
 What sort of contact can you expect?
 Will the advisor check with you to see if your objectives have changed?
 What products and services are available?
 Do they have access to many different asset classes or are they restricted to the
sale of only mutual funds?
 Are their offices conveniently located?
 What are the costs involved? What is the advisor’s usual hourly rate, flat fee, or
commission? Most firms charge a combination of fee-based services and
commission.
 Will your account be a priority?
 Is the amount of money you intend to have them manage comparable to the
assets of other clients?
 Will your advisor be accessible for questions or meetings?
 What other staff will influence decisions made on your account? Be sure to
interview all such staff!!!
The most important ingredient in a successful relationship is chemistry. Chemistry means
having mutual trust and respect and reaching a level where you are comfortable and confident
in your investment advisor’s abilities.

10-Point Scam-Prevention Checklist
"There are plenty of investment scams to watch out for," says Jim Trippon, CPA, "Even the brightest and
richest can fall victim to con artists seeking to make a buck, fraudulently, at your expense. Below are 10
suggestions for how you can avoid being taken advantage of:
1. Trust your gut instincts. If an investment sounds too good to be true, it probably is and you
should politely decline to pursue it.
2. Double-check it with advisors you trust. Before making an investment, run it by your trusted
advisors -- your comprehensive financial advisor, your CPA, your attorney, and of course, your
spouse.
3. Only invest with member firms of the NASD and SIPC. If buying securities, only do business
with investment companies, which are members of the NASD (National Association of Securities
Dealers) and the SIPC (Securities Investors Protection Corporation).
4. If a security is not publicly traded, don’t buy it. Never buy a security that is not already
publicly traded with a verifiable history. Never buy a “private placement,” “limited partnership,”
“precious metal,” “viatical settlement,” or “promissory note investment.”
5. Never buy any investment over the phone.
6. Get the broker’s license number and check his or her background. Ask if the investment
broker you are speaking with is licensed with the NASD and obtain their CRD number. Then
check his or her background by contacting the NASD public disclosure program at (800) 289-
9999 or (301) 590-6500, or on the Internet at www.nasdr.com. You will be able to learn how long
the broker has been in business and what complaints (if any) are on the advisor’s record.
7. If buying insurance, verify it is licensed for sale in your state. If you are buying an insurance
product, verify that both the product and the broker selling it are licensed with your state
department of insurance or insurance commissioner. You can generally reach this department by
contacting directory assistance in your state capital. Or you can locate your state insurance
commissioner information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners at
www.naic.org.
8. Check the financial ratings. If you are buying an insurance product, also verify the insurance
carriers’ financial strength rating from the major rating agencies: A.M. Best, Duff & Phelps, &
Standard & Poor’s.
9. Use restrictive endorsements. When buying an investment always make your check payable to
the investment company using a restrictive endorsement. If you are opening an account with ABC
brokerage and your name is John Smith you should style your check as follows: “ABC Brokerage
FBO John Smith”. The letters FBO stand for “For the Benefit Of” which means that it can only be
deposited into your account at ABC Brokerage. Never make your investment check payable to
the individual selling the reinvestment and never invest using cash.
10. Get it in writing. Get a copy of everything you sign and all account-opening documents,
prospectuses and product disclosures.
The bottom line on scams boils down to the use of common sense. Do not let greed or anxiety trick you
into a foolish investment, and do your homework before buying anything.

How to Avoid Running Out
of Money During Retirement
How much is enough to retire? Fifty-nine percent of people age 65 or older receive
income from assets. Forty-one percent collect a pension. Twenty-two percent still earn
income from a job or business. Ninety percent collect social security. (Source: 2000 US
Dept. of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging). "Whatever amount you
retire with and regardless of what you continue to earn as a source of income once
retired," says Jim Trippon, CPA, author of Stay Rich Forever, "you want to protect your
assets and income from the IRS, unplanned expenses, scams, lawsuits and other
hardships."
Outside of taxes, here are the major money-depleting expenses to watch out for:
Unplanned healthcare expenses
 Your health or disability plan may not include long-term health care or assisted living.
 Buy long-term care insurance if you have assets and income to protect, you want to
avoid being financially dependent on others or if you want to maintain choice about how
and when to receive care.
 Health plans like Medicare cost retirees thousands of dollars for prescription drugs,
doctor's fees, hospitalization costs and long-term care costs such as a nursing home.
Investment scams and swindles
 Watch for unlicensed individuals, such as life insurance agents, selling securities.
 Beware of elaborate schemes, pay phone and ATM sales fraud and Internet fraud.
 Avoid fake promissory notes and redeeming high-yield CDs prematurely.
 Don't trust scammers who use one’s race or religion to gain your trust for an investment.
Debts acquired in re-marriage
 Re-marriage accounts for 40 percent of all marriages and causes major changes in
one's financial planning.

settlement that is financially devastating, but the cost of paying for a legal defense.

Jim Trippon: I think it is absolutely foolish to suggest spending down one’s principal. Books such as “Die Broke” do a terrible disservice to readers with that kind of advice. It is impossible to predict when one will die and people are living much longer than ever before. It’s also impossible to predict what most investments will earn. Jim Trippon: I have a simple formula: You will find you have enough money for retirement when, on an “inflation adjusted basis"; you can maintain the lifestyle you want to live without invading your investment principal. If living the life you want means spending down your principal, then you aren’t financially ready for retirement. Once again, don’t forget to factor in inflation when you calculate your income needs. Jim Trippon: I tell the stories of many millionaires in my book and the surprising thing I found is that 80 percent of millionaires are self-made. Give me an example of practical money-saving techniques anyone can use. Jim Trippon: Many of the “millionaire techniques” that I describe are all about saving money. Millionaires do a lot of things to hold on to their money such as comparison shopping for everything through the Internet, doing energy audits to save 35 percent on electric bills, financing their cars through low interest home equity loans, using cell phones with nationwide free long distance, splitting prescriptions and raising insurance deductibles. Saving a dollar is even better than earning one. After all, there’s no tax bite on money you save. Q: In your book, you write about using “tax loopholes” to increase income. Is that dangerous in any way? Jim Trippon: I strongly recommend arranging one’s finances to take advantage of every available tax benefit. I absolutely do not recommend tax evasion. More often, financial disaster happens in ways that can be avoided…ways that include bad investment decisions, poor tax planning and the failure to make some crucial decisions on retirement day. Important financial problems can also arise from second marriages. These are things that anyone, whether or not they are a millionaire, can take specific action to prevent. Q: Do millionaires ever stop worrying about money? Jim Trippon: You might think that millionaires have other things to worry about but my research shows that’s not the case. I find that their number one worry is about running out of money even if they have millions in the bank. They also spend a lot of time thinking about managing their investments. And, number three on their list of concerns is avoiding taxes. Getting rich is all about being careful with money and staying rich clearly means remaining vigilant. That’s one of the key lessons I learned from my survey of millionaires. Q: How much debt is acceptable? Jim Trippon: Prior to retirement, debt for home ownership can still be a good investment. Your spouse? Your children? Are you sure? "A commonly overlooked issue in retirement planning is that of having a seamless transition plan in place for the management of your investments in case of your illness or incapacity," says Jim Trippon, CPA, author of Stay Rich Forever. If you become so ill that you are incapacitated one of three things will happen: 1. You will have a properly written and executed power of attorney for a person you pre- designated to take over the management of your financial affairs, OR 2. You will have a properly written and executed living trust agreement for a co-trustee or successor trustee you designated to take over management, OR 3. A judge will take control of all your assets and funds and will appoint a guardian to manage your affairs. This guardian may be someone you know (such as your spouse) or it may be someone you have never met. Here are 10 reasons to make sure your investment plan will be carried out if you become ill or incapacitated: 1. You lose control of how your money will be managed without a plan. 2. Lacking a plan may create substantial personal and financial stress on your family. 3. Without a plan, your accounts might be frozen while court proceedings decide who will manage them. 4. If you don't have a plan, your family may not even know where to locate all of your assets, at the time you need them the most, to cover your healthcare costs. 5. Without a plan, your guardian may dispose of your best investments and put the money into something safe like a non-interest-bearing checking account. 6. Your income taxes may skyrocket when your portfolio is restructured if you lack a plan. 7. Without a plan, a court appointed guardian may end up in charge of all your worldly possessions. 8. Your assets, absent a plan, may be depleted from the charges a court appointed guardian levies to manage your financial affairs. 9. Without a plan, you eliminate the possibility of naming one of your family members or trusted friends to manage your assets the way you want them handled. 10.If you lack a plan, it will be too late to explain how you want your assets managed because by definition you are incapacitated and therefore unable to do so. "Most potential clients I meet assume that if they become ill, a family member will be able to step right in and take over management of their investment portfolio," says Trippon, "The reason for this erroneous belief is that it sounds like a reasonable and practical solution. Unfortunately, unless you have taken specific steps to document and record these wishes, it is more likely that your assets will end up in a passbook savings account controlled by a court, or worse yet, controlled by a guardian chosen by your local judge, who will be billing your account regularly for his 'management fees’."

An investment advisor will help you set goals, including the age at which you want to retire and choosing the funds required to get there. They are responsible for filtering through the endless stream of financial products available and evaluating which ones will enhance your personal situation. Your main priority should be finding an investment advisor you are comfortable with. Does he or she meet both your immediate and future needs? The first thing to consider is the education and reputation of the advisor. What are the advisor’s credentials? How long has he or she been in business? What experience does the company have, especially with people in your circumstances? Where did the advisor go to school? What is the advisor’s recent employment history? What licenses are held? Is the advisor and the company registered with the SEC, with your state, and the NASD? Before interviewing advisors, develop specific questions related to your financial goals and your own personal style. Are you looking for a partner in managing your investments, or are you willing to provide the advisor with control? Do you have any social or political beliefs that will need to be considered in establishing your goals and selecting an advisor? Remember to look for a teacher and not a salesman. You want someone who is willing to explain the financial buzzwords, not just dazzle you with them. Ask the advisor:  Will you receive an annual review of your strategy or portfolio evaluation?  How often should you meet?  What sort of contact can you expect?  Will the advisor check with you to see if your objectives have changed?  What products and services are available?  Do they have access to many different asset classes or are they restricted to the sale of only mutual funds?  Are their offices conveniently located?  What are the costs involved? What is the advisor’s usual hourly rate, flat fee, or commission? Most firms charge a combination of fee-based services and commission.  Will your account be a priority?  Is the amount of money you intend to have them manage comparable to the assets of other clients?  Will your advisor be accessible for questions or meetings?  What other staff will influence decisions made on your account? Be sure to interview all such staff!!! The most important ingredient in a successful relationship is chemistry. Chemistry means having mutual trust and respect and reaching a level where you are comfortable and confident in your investment advisor’s abilities.

Below are 10 suggestions for how you can avoid being taken advantage of: 1. Trust your gut instincts. If an investment sounds too good to be true, it probably is and you should politely decline to pursue it. 2. Double-check it with advisors you trust. Before making an investment, run it by your trusted advisors -- your comprehensive financial advisor, your CPA, your attorney, and of course, your spouse. 3. Only invest with member firms of the NASD and SIPC. If buying securities, only do business with investment companies, which are members of the NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers) and the SIPC (Securities Investors Protection Corporation). 4. If a security is not publicly traded, don’t buy it. Never buy a security that is not already publicly traded with a verifiable history. Never buy a “private placement,” “limited partnership,” “precious metal,” “viatical settlement,” or “promissory note investment.” 5. Never buy any investment over the phone. 6. Get the broker’s license number and check his or her background. Ask if the investment broker you are speaking with is licensed with the NASD and obtain their CRD number. Then check his or her background by contacting the NASD public disclosure program at (800) 289- 9999 or (301) 590-6500, or on the Internet at www.nasdr.com. You will be able to learn how long the broker has been in business and what complaints (if any) are on the advisor’s record. 7. If buying insurance, verify it is licensed for sale in your state. If you are buying an insurance product, verify that both the product and the broker selling it are licensed with your state department of insurance or insurance commissioner. You can generally reach this department by contacting directory assistance in your state capital. Or you can locate your state insurance commissioner information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners at www.naic.org. 8. Check the financial ratings. If you are buying an insurance product, also verify the insurance carriers’ financial strength rating from the major rating agencies: A.M. Best, Duff & Phelps, & Standard & Poor’s. 9. Use restrictive endorsements. When buying an investment always make your check payable to the investment company using a restrictive endorsement. If you are opening an account with ABC brokerage and your name is John Smith you should style your check as follows: “ABC Brokerage FBO John Smith”. The letters FBO stand for “For the Benefit Of” which means that it can only be deposited into your account at ABC Brokerage. Never make your investment check payable to the individual selling the reinvestment and never invest using cash. 10. Get it in writing. Get a copy of everything you sign and all account-opening documents, prospectuses and product disclosures. The bottom line on scams boils down to the use of common sense. Do not let greed or anxiety trick you into a foolish investment, and do your homework before buying anything.

Fifty-nine percent of people age 65 or older receive income from assets. Forty-one percent collect a pension. Twenty-two percent still earn income from a job or business. "Whatever amount you retire with and regardless of what you continue to earn as a source of income once retired," says Jim Trippon, CPA, author of Stay Rich Forever, "you want to protect your assets and income from the IRS, unplanned expenses, scams, lawsuits and other hardships." Outside of taxes, here are the major money-depleting expenses to watch out for: Unplanned healthcare expenses  Your health or disability plan may not include long-term health care or assisted living.  Buy long-term care insurance if you have assets and income to protect, you want to avoid being financially dependent on others or if you want to maintain choice about how and when to receive care.  Health plans like Medicare cost retirees thousands of dollars for prescription drugs, doctor's fees, hospitalization costs and long-term care costs such as a nursing home. Investment scams and swindles  Watch for unlicensed individuals, such as life insurance agents, selling securities.  Beware of elaborate schemes, pay phone and ATM sales fraud and Internet fraud.  Avoid fake promissory notes and redeeming high-yield CDs prematurely.  Don't trust scammers who use one’s race or religion to gain your trust for an investment. Debts acquired in re-marriage  Re-marriage accounts for 40 percent of all marriages and causes major changes in one's financial planning.  Setting up trusts, wills, tax-filing procedures and pension plan calculations may need to be altered once another person comes into the equation.  One spouse's debt, obligations for child support or alimony, poor financial planning or lack of income can drain the resources of the other spouse. Unplanned litigation and processional liability suits for events occurring before retirement  First, maintain a general liability umbrella insurance policy. It is sometimes just called an "umbrella" policy. It should be for a minimum of $1 million in coverage. Call your agent to determine the proper coverage for your situation. You will find it very inexpensive to buy.  If you retired, or nearing retirement from a profession that commonly gets sued such as a physician or attorney, purchase a special type of professional liability insurance, called "tail coverage." See your agent for details.  Purchase a "pre-paid legal" services policy. In many cases it is not the ultimate settlement that is financially devastating, but the cost of paying for a legal defense.
