hey’re ready to turn the page on the old politics and the old policies - whether it’s the
war in Iraq or the health care crisis we’re in, or a school system that’s leaving too
many kids behind despite the slogans. I can no more disown him than I can my white
grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for
me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who
once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than
one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.1
This time we
want to talk about the men and women of every color and creed who serve together, and fight
together, and bleed together under the same proud flag. And he does not bring up a specific
issue. We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton
was President - when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of
down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.2
This is the reality in which Reverend Wright and other African-Americans of his generation
grew up. But the anger is real; it is powerful; and to simply wish it away, to condemn it
without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that
exists between the races. And I’ve seen it in this campaign. We will open centers of scientific
excellence in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and appoint new Science Envoys
to collaborate on programs that develop new sources of energy, create green jobs, digitize
records, clean water, and grow new crops.3
When we send our young men and women into harm’s way, we have a solemn obligation not
to fudge the numbers or shade the truth about why they’re going, to care for their families
while they’re gone, to tend to the soldiers upon their return, and to never ever go to war
without enough troops to win the war, secure the peace, and earn the respect of the world.
Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is
the United States of America. And in time, I came to see faith as more than just a comfort to
the weary or a hedge against death, but rather as an active, palpable agent in the world and
in my own life. There is a young, twenty-three year old white woman named Ashley Baia who
organized for our campaign in Florence, South Carolina. We cannot walk alone.4

After the war, they studied on the G.I. You’re on your own. Because if you
don’t have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters.
So America will defend itself respectful of the sovereignty of nations and
the rule of law.
We rolled out our Innovation Readiness Index™ last fall, a report to
gauge where FIs are on the road to becoming innovators. Our Innovation
Playbook series was subsequently developed to zone in on specific
patterns in our dataset. The first, published in January, was our Top
Payments Performer Edition and dug deep into what top innovators are
doing to make an impact. In March, the FI Segments Payment Performer
Edition examined mid-sized FIs with assets ranging from $5 billion to $25
billion.
Tell that to the military families who shoulder their burdens silently as they
watch their loved ones leave for their third or fourth or fifth tour of duty.
So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country.

They want a sense of purpose, a narrative arc to their lives. And I found
that I recognized in these folks a part of myself. This is the reality in
which Reverend Wright and other African-Americans of his generation
grew up. And as someone who watched my mother argue with insurance
companies while she lay in bed dying of cancer, I will make certain those
companies stop discriminating against those who are sick and need care
the most.

I thought of the 900 men and women - sons and
daughters, husbands and wives, friends and
neighbors, who won’t be returning to their own
hometowns.5
They’re ready to turn the page on the
old politics and the old policies - whether it’s the
war in Iraq or the health care crisis we’re in, or a

despite the slogans. To the Joshua generation,
these challenges seem momentous - and they are.
You know, a while back, I met a young man named
Seamus in a V.F.W. Now let me be clear. I believe
we can provide jobs to the jobless, homes to the
homeless, and reclaim young people in cities
across America from violence and despair. They’re
looking to relieve a chronic loneliness. It’s a story
with a simple truth: that violence is a dead end.
The Arab-Israeli conflict should no longer be used
to distract the people of Arab nations from other
problems.

At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to
gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a
politician’s own failings. As a boy, I spent several
years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan
at the break of dawn and the fall of dusk.6
This
bond is unbreakable. That is in Israel’s interest,
Palestine’s interest, America’s interest, and the
world’s interest. The fourth issue that I will address
is democracy.
The day after Pearl Harbor my grandfather signed
up for duty; joined Patton’s army, marched across
Europe. So it’s 1985, and I’m in Chicago, and I’m
working with these churches, and with lots of
laypeople who are much older than I am. I just think
he doesn’t know. Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald,
which was part of a network of camps where
Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot and gassed
to death by the Third Reich. The same is true for
the astonishing progress within Muslim-majority
countries from Kuala Lumpur to Dubai.
