Small dairy farmers in developing countries face challenges participating in the formal dairy market due to lack of infrastructure and distrust with dairy companies. The document proposes focusing on medium sized farmers of 10 or more cows and professionalizing the dairy production system with technologies, services, quality standards and cool chain infrastructure in order to improve livelihoods and sustainability of the dairy industry. Partnerships between supply chain actors and farmers are needed to support innovative solutions that can give dairy farmers access to markets.
