Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was an Italian Renaissance composer born in 1526 in Palestrina, Italy. He was a major figure in the development of Roman Catholic church music through genres like masses, motets, and madrigals. His most famous works included masses and motets that showcased Renaissance polyphony and modal counterpoint in a liturgical style that came to be known as the "Palestrina style". He served as an organist and teacher in his native Palestrina before being invited to prestigious positions in Vienna and Mantua.
