Gifted and Talented Children Vision:
Our vision for students who are gifted and talented is that they feel valued in a learning
environment which both challenges and supports them to pursue excellence and develop a
passion for longlife learning (Education Queensland, nd)
‘Giftedness’ - Innate ability (little to no
systematic training or development)
‘Talent’ - Innate but developed ability
resulting from support, systematic training,
teaching and home/school input
Characteristics of Giftedness
•      Highly effective problem-solving behavior
•      Visionary leadership
•      Imaginative planning ability
•      High capacity for evaluative or reflective thought
•      Ability to integrate and synthesize ideas
•      Power to visualize and plan spatially
•      Beauty in forming and using language
•      Abstract thought in mathematical-scientific-technological areas
•      Advanced musical composition and or performance
Objectives
The Gifted and Talented policies created by Education Queensland (1993)
have three major objectives these being;
• Appropriate provision for gifted students to develop their potential
• Recognition and nurturing of a wide range of students' abilities
• Development of understanding of the educational implications of
giftedness.
Each of these objectives, help to accommodate and enrich learning
experiences for gifted and talented learners within a mainstream / contextual
classroom. They help further challenge students to achieve higher
academically in the specific area/s in which they have been identified as
gifted and or talented.
