- I am speaking to you today on behalf of EUROCITIES, the European network of major cities. Together our 140 members make up a quarter of the EU’s population. Our role is to provide a voice at EU level for city mayors on the big issues that affect the day-to-day lives of our citizens. And also to provide a permanent framework within which they can exchange, learn from one another and develop new solutions to shared challenges.As the city of Ghent we are Vice-Chair of the knowledge society forum within EUROCITIES, which brings together cities of the network – through expert working groups –on issues such as smart cities, open data, eInclusion and broadband.

- EUROCITIES has been very supportive of the development of the Smart Cities and Communities initiative and city representatives will contribute directly to the working groups of the new stakeholder platform.the two-way process that is also at the heart of the work of the EUROCITIES network: connecting EU strategies and frameworks directly to citizens – which we can do as cities, the level of government closest to the citizens and as the places where the majority of the EU’s population live. But also ensuring we use the knowledge and expertise we gain through projects such as our EUROCITIES NiCE project, our Green Digital Charter, Apollon and Fireball, to inform the development of EU policies and strategies of the future
