THOR Workshop - Data Publishing Elsevier
Elsevier supports researchers in sharing their data through several programs and services:
1. A data-linking program connects articles to over 60 domain-specific data repositories through in-article data accession numbers and banners.
2. Mendeley Data is Elsevier's research data repository, allowing researchers to store, share and publish research data with a DOI and link to related articles.
3. In-article data visualization tools display plot data from supplementary materials in journals, allowing readers to access, explore and download underlying data.

The Dataverse project, developed at Harvard's Institute for Quantitative Social Science since 2006, is a widely used software platform to share and archive data for research. There are currently more than 20 Dataverse repository installations worldwide, with the Harvard Dataverse repository alone hosting more than 60,000 datasets. Dataverse provides incentives to researchers to share their data, giving them credit through data citation and control over terms of use and access. In this talk, I'll discuss the Dataverse project, as well as related projects such as DataTags to share sensitive data and Cloud Dataverse to share Big Data.

FAIR data has flown up the hype curve without a clear sense of return from the required data stewardship investment. The killer use case for FAIR data is a science knowledge graph. It enables you to richly address novel questions of your and the world’s data. We started with data catalogues (findability) which exploited linked/referenced data using a few focused vocabularies (interoperability), for credentialed users (accessibility), with provenance and attribution (reusability) to make this happen.

Data Publishing: The research community needs reliable, standard ways to make the data produced by scientific research available to the community, while giving credit to data authors. As a result, a new form of scholarly publication is emerging: data publishing. Data publishing - or making data reusable, citable, and accessible for long periods - is more than simply providing a link to a data file or posting the data to the researcher’s web site. We will discuss best practices, including the use of persistent identifiers and full data citations, the importance of metadata, the choice between public data and restricted data with terms of use, the workflows for collaboration and review before data release, and the role of trusted archival repositories. The Harvard Dataverse repository (and the Dataverse open-source software) provides a solution for data publishing, making it easy for researchers to follow these best practices, while satisfying data management requirements and incentivizing the sharing of research data.

Live hosts on a network, network topology, OS version, open ports on hosts, services running on hosts, running applications and their versions, patching level, vulnerabilities.
In passive information gathering, the hacker does not directly contact the target; therefore, no audit logs have been created. Both non-technical (such as employee names, birth dates, e-mail addresses) and technical information (IP addresses, domain names) can be gathered. This information can be used in many ways in the subsequent steps of the attack. For example, the phone numbers or e-mail addresses you discovered can be used in social engineering attacks. DNS records or subdomain names can be used to leverage specific attacks against hosts or URLs.

1) In this phase, an attacker may collect a lot of information without being noticed.
2) In some cases, an attacker may even discover vulnerabilities.
3) The information collected in this phase can be quite valuable when evaluated together with the information collected in the scanning and enumeration phase. For example, you might find the phone number and name of an employee in this phase, and you may find the computer IP address in the active scanning phase. You can use these two pieces of information together to leverage a social engineering attack. An attacker will increase the chance of gaining trust when s/he calls the victim's name and talk some specific about the victim's computer.
4) Companies should also perform reconnaissance and information gathering against themselves so that they can discover -before hackers- what kind of information the company and company employees disclose.
In this lab, you will practice 6 passive methods of Reconnaissance and Information Gathering. You have to use Kali VM in Sections 3, 5, and 6 of the lab. You may use Kali.

The Partos IATI programme aims to implement IATI within Dutch NGOs over two years. It provides helpdesk support and workshops to help 25 initial NGOs publish their data to the IATI standard in two batches. The goal is to embed open data practices within these organizations. Several NGOs discuss their experiences implementing IATI and insights it provided into their projects in Afghanistan and Congo. Questions remain around costs and data quality, but the standard itself is not seen as a major issue with better documentation and guidelines.

Looking back: open data for development camp
Over 127 people attended the two-day Open Data for Development Camp held in May 2011 in Amsterdam. The event saw over 1700 chat messages and 450 emails exchanged during its planning and saw 9 data sets and apps presented, with 6 sets of data released for the first time and 4 applications and APIs built. The Dutch government expressed its commitment to transparency and innovation using open data and there was an aim to increase cooperation between the government and NGOs on these issues through connecting actors and international networking.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
