You as a nonprofit can “direct sell” on eBay to anyone in the world to raise money. eBay credits some fees and the buyer gets a tax deduction. 2. List your organization as a beneficiary on Giving Works and a “community seller” can select you as the beneficiary for a sale of their product for 10 - 100% of the proceeds. Seller gets a tax deduction for the amount that goes to the nonprofit. HelaCommunications.com

Editor's Notes

  1. READ SLIDE Being social utilizing social media is the same as being social in actual life. All of your social media relationships require give and take to make the most out of them. I know many people that just have Facebook or Twitter accounts to see what everyone else is doing and that’s fine, but you can benefit more from these relationships if you engage with them. That means posting comments, tagging photos, replying and re-tweeting.
  2. READ SLIDE Email started hitting the workforce in the mid 90s. I like using this statement as an analogy because you can and should look at social media today the same way you looked at email in the mid 90s. If you didn’t catch on, you very quickly became outdated and irrelevant. Most social media platforms have only been around for 6-8 years so they are really still in their infancy. As I’m sure many of you know, these website make physical changes, upgrades and policy changes pretty frequently and that’s going to continue rapidly for the next few years. So the point of this slide is to say to you all today, that if you’re not already engaged in social media, you are missing out on a lot of technology that is going to be the basis for the way we communicate in the future - even more than the way we do today.
  3. Here are some of the social media that we’re going to discuss today. Some of the information is going to be very basic and some of you will have already heard some of what I say. Some of the information will likely be new and hopefully helpful. Social media is now so VERY broad that it’s hard to pinpoint just one or two areas without knowing everyone’s knowledge base. I also want to mention that I’m going to talk about how to use social media personally throughout the presentation as well as some general tips on ways to use it professionally. Even if you aren’t the person who handles your social media at work, odds are that you will one day be involved or that it’s good for you to know about how social media works professionally just to be informed. So let’s get started and go ahead and set the scene a little bit with Facebook.
  4. Just by a show of hands, how many people have a Facebook account? How many people would say they are “active” on Facebook?
  5. Okay, so let’s understand the breadth of Facebook a little bit and why it’s so important today for how we are social with one another. READ SLIDE In only seven years of existence, Facebook already has 600 million users. That’s pretty remarkable for a start-up company that was launched from a Harvard dorm room.
  6. READ SLIDE I fall into both of those categories. The last thing I do before I turn off the lamp is check Facebook and Twitter. The first thing I do is check both accounts when I wake up in the morning. If I can’t sleep, I read FB and Twitter or play some of my game applications.
  7. READ SLIDE Facebook is getting a little bit older. In fact, the fast growing demographic of Facebook users is over the age of 50. There are many reasons why - but one major reason is because parents and grandparents are finding that it’s a really good way to stay in touch with their own children.
  8. READ SLIDE So, basically, if you have internet access in the United States, which I assume that everyone in this room does have internet access, 70 percent of those internet users have a Facebook account. This 41.6 percent number is a little misleading because it includes all people in the United States, and some of those people are babies or young children. Now, I actually know many babies and young kids that have Facebook pages or are merely an extension of their parents pages, but in reality, if you’re five years old, you probably don’t need a Facebook page. This other statistic is very important - READ SLIDE. This number is going to grow. Facebook is trying very hard to get into China, but there is still a lot of pushback from the Chinese government. If and inevitably WHEN they get into China, Facebook will have tremendous growth. From a cultural and political perspective, Facebook will also play a major role in many of China’s policies.
  9. READ SLIDE
  10. READ SLIDE Some people find this statistic very depressing, but I am able to have relationships through Facebook that I would not have had otherwise. I’m able to talk to my relatives in India on a regular, non-invasive basis and quite honestly, it’s not always easy to just pick up the phone and call those guys. Also, I’m not from Mobile, and I’ve lived in Atlanta, Chapel Hill and Detroit, and I am able to stay in touch with friends and co-workers that I wouldn’t have…those relationships would have fizzled. So I definitely talk to people more online that I do in real life and the reason why is because I’ve been able to expand my social network so much more. And I’m sure that many of you can say the same thing. You may have 300 Facebook friends. Well, that doesn’t mean that you would be talking to these 300 people all the time in real life, you just now have more opportunities to engage them because of social media. Right?
  11. Let’s see what takes place within a 20 minute timeframe with Facebook users worldwide… READ SLIDE These numbers are averages. During holidays or major news events, all of these numbers will go up. It’s interesting… Think about what would have happened if Facebook was around on September 11, 2001. We would have had a completely different experience and memory of that day. In a lot of ways, it would have been helpful to communicate when cell towers were overloaded.
  12. To sum it all up, READ SLIDE. If you have access to the internet and you’re not on Facebook, you are likely becoming someone that’s a little outdated. Now - that might sound like tough love, but think about how much email has changed the way we work and communicate and process information. The possibilities for Facebook are endless. So if you’re not in the game now, are you going to be able to play five years from now when it’s even more integrated with everyone’s life?
  13. Okay…so we set the scene with the demographics of Facebook. Now, I’m going to use my personal page to highlight some very basic features for those of you who may still be hesitant about the platform. When you set up a Facebook account, you have a personal page. OPEN my personal page and show how to: - Make a status update - Showcase photos and videos - how to tag people - Invite to events - people use for birthday parties, study groups, dinner parties, fundraisers and even things like weddings and receptions. - Apps & games - we’re going to talk a little bit more about this later - but using apps, particularly when you use Facebook on your phone, can greatly expand how you spend your time on Facebook. - Privacy - recommend that you go to your privacy settings and really read them. Because privacy is not and never should be one size fits all. Everyone has different level of expectation for your own privacy in your real life, so you should absolutely customize your privacy settings on Facebook to what works for you. - Places - will talk more about this later, but I’m going to check in on FB using my iphone right now.
  14. So when you have a personal page on your Facebook account, you can also have what is called a product page linked to your account. SHOW MY PRODUCT PAGE - you can see that I have four different product pages that I serve as an administrator for. READ # 1 - GO TO NEXT SLIDE AND THEN GO BACK. READ # 2 - You can have fun on Facebook and post different trivia items, you can talk about upcoming events or sales, you can even break news to your Facebook fans. I don’t care what industry your company is in, you have lots to talk about on Facebook, so mix it up. READ # 3 - Bellingrath Gardens does a great job with this. READ # 4 - There are many URL shorteners out there now. And they allow you to track how many people click on your link. So you are instantly able to track the effectiveness of your Facebook post. READ LAST LINE - Bottom line is that your company should have a Facebook page…and if you are still unsure about it, search other Facebook pages for companies that are similar to you and I guarantee that you will find some of those similar businesses utilizing Facebook.
  15. I know that many of you work at nonprofits and that you are all obviously involved with the Junior League, so I wanted to touch on some tips for nonprofits on Facebook very quickly. CLICK ON FACEBOOK CAUSES - Causes is a 3 rd party app available through Facebook that allows individuals to raise money for nonprofits. This particular cause - the race to end cancer - was started by a college student who felt like she didn’t have enough time to volunteer. So she started this cause - and by the way, she had no affiliation with the hospital - as a way for her to give back. Now, the hospital helps to co-manage the page and they’ve raised more than XX thousand dollars. CLICK ON FB ADS LINK - show cost per click INTEGRATE - very important to integrate. Social media is not an island. IMPACT - the point is to be social and you can use your nonprofit’s FB page to tell your story.
  16. So hopefully that was a lot of food for thought about Facebook. We’re going to move on to the third most visited website out there and the second most popular social media platform - YouTube.
  17. So let’s set the scene with YouTube. READ SLIDE. SHOW VIDEO… Founded by three executives that worked for PayPal. The idea came from two different issues. One of the founders became frustrated when he couldn’t find the video of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction and the other was that the founders were frustrated that they couldn’t email a video due to size restrictions. Thus YouTube was born….
  18. READ SLIDE - grew very quickly…just like Facebook.
  19. READ SLIDE In a 60 day period on YouTube, more video content is uploaded than all three of the major U.S. television networks have produced in the past 60 years, combined.
  20. READ SLIDE…. Does anyone have a guess???
  21. Yep. Tina Fey’s impersonation of then vice-presidential candidate on Saturday Night Live dramatically increased YouTube usage for the older demographic. The funny thing is that the highest quality video was on NBC.com. But YouTube had already branded itself so well, that most searchers just went to YouTube to find, watch and then email the video.

  23. So, let’s go over a few basics on how to utilize YouTube… The same way that you have a personal page on Facebook, you can have a personal “channel” on YouTube that allows you to post videos, showcase the videos you like, make comments, etc. CLICK ON LINK - Nowadays, it’s easiest just to use your smart phone to take and upload video. My YouTube channel is nothing to write home about, but I use it to post videos of my mom making Indian recipes. UPLOAD THE VIDEO, and if you make it public, see what happens…SHOW CHARLIE BIT MY FINGER. Tags are important - way to categorize your video for searching. Most videos are under two minutes in length. Another way you can really benefit is to search YouTube the same way you do Google.
  24. You can and also should use YouTube for business use, particularly if you’re a nonprofit. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a thousand pictures… YouTube gives special rights to nonprofits that regular channels don’t have automatic access to.
  25. So moving on to Twitter….
  26. Twitter came onto the scene after Facebook and YouTube… READ SLIDE… Twitter became important and popular thanks to growth of smartphones and texting…
  27. That’s what the daylong brainstorming session came up with and if you recall the original Twitter, you remember that this is pretty much what it looked like. Twitter wanted to be simple, short and sweet.
  28. Read slide…
  29. Read slide So Twitter has a far smaller userbase than either Facebook or YouTube, but it plays some very, very important cultural roles, which will discuss in just a second.
  30. The information on this slide is very important for businesses and advertisers. When compared to Facebook, READ SLIDE…
  31. READ SLIDE This is also very important for businesses and advertisers who are trying to communicate with the college demographic.
  32. READ SLIDE
  33. Here are some basic tips for utilizing Twitter. Each Tweet is limited to 140 characters or less. Because characters are limited, url shorteners become all the more important in the Twittosphere. Twitter as a platform allows more developer-access than Facebook. So you can use Twitter from a variety of different applications whereas to really use Facebook, you have to login through Facebook. SHOW MY PAGE… SHOW HOOTSUITE…I very rarely use Twitter from actual Twitter platform. I use HootSuite at work and then my iPhone apps when I’m away from work.
  34. Twitter, just like other social media, allow you to interact with friends, family and products. SHOW SIX FLAGS PAGE Twitter has replaced RSS feeds for blogs and company info… Pop culture - I didn’t actually watch the grammys myself, but through Twitter, I know that Lady Gaga showed up as an egg and Bob Dylan sounded crazy as ever and that Eminem performed. I could have watched all three hours of the grammys but I was able to glean a lot of the top information with a one minute glance at my tweets. Hashtags are a way to categorize a tweet…SEARCH FOR #JUNIORLEAGUE Lastly, Twitter can change the world…we’ve all been hearing about Egypt, right? Well here is good video that showcases how social media, including Twitter helped to sustain that revolution.
  35. The top 20 most followed people are basically celebrities… TwitterCounter.com. - CLICK ON LINK…. When Lady Gaga tweets, X million people receive that information…
  36. 2011 is going to be the YEAR OF LOCATION BASED SERVICES. Saw huge growth in 2010 and Facebook Places launched in 2010. There is a lot of potential for growth with location based services but many people draw the line here about privacy concerns. So, it will be interesting to see how 2011 plays out with location based services.
  37. Facebook has the largest potential for growth. With more than 600 million users worldwide, it has the capability to mainstream location based services. But Facebook Places has actually not caught on as much as expected.
  38. There are many businesses that have launched very effective campaigns with Facebook Places. The University of Kentucky put the Facebook Places icon all throughout their campus as a visual reminder for students to check-in on campus. They saw this as a viral recruitment tool as the friends and family of students would see them checking-in on campus. Great way to spread the word to high school students.
  39. The statistics are still a little foggy on Facebook Deals. As of this month, Facebook says that quote “millions” of people have used the service, but it’s still not very well integrated on smartphone apps. Again, Facebook has a tremendous amount of potential because of their 600 million users to hurt competitors like Groupon, LivingSocial and Foursquare, but the Facebook Places app needs to catch on more. One major difference is that while Groupon can get up to 50 percent of each deal posted, Facebook’s Deals are free to businesses. So what does Facebook get out of the deals app? Two things that Facebook wants more of all the time - engagement and data.
  40. FourSquare was launched in March of 2009. Basically, people will check-in to a certain location using their smart phone and points are awarded for checking in at various venues. Users can connect their Foursquare accounts to Twitter and Facebook. By checking in a certain number of times, or in different locations, users can collect virtual badges. In addition, users who have checked in the most times at a certain venue will be crowned “Mayor” until someone surpasses their number. Various venues have embraced Foursquare, and offer special deals to users who are “mayors”.
  41. READ SLIDE That 3400 percent is not a typo. And Foursquare is still seeing steady growth - about 25,000 new users per day worldwide. So, all in all, location based services are still very new and will continue to grow, but a lot of businesses have not jumped onto this bandwagon yet. You can expect to see a lot more growth in 2011
