`` Weapons, Technology Determination And Ancient Warfare ``
Technological Determination and Hoplites
Logically, it makes sense that the army with the most advanced technology would win battles against a
less equipped one. However, in his paper titled Weapons, Technology Determination and Ancient
Warfare, Fernando Echeverria Rey brings to light the paradox of this idea in ancient warfare, as well
as undermine the modern idea of technological determinism by claiming that it does not have an
ancient equivalent. His argument approaches the study of ancient warfare from different perspectives
as he [offers] alternative ways to explain technological and tactical change in warfare (Echeverria
2010: 24). Echeverria Rey makes strong points for his arguments and supports his ideas clearly. While

While the political level and structural level entail that ancient communities were determined by
military factors (Echeverria 2010:22) and that these military factors produce and explain broader socio
political change (Echeverria 2010:22) respectively. By focusing in on the battlefield level in his paper,
Echeverria Rey stresses the distinction between these three levels and maintains clarity in his
argument. He supports his argument by also putting to the test the assumptions, that first some kinds
of weapons and tactics are objectively superior to others and that secondly, societies are always trying
to create or import such superior weapons and tactics (Echeverria 2010:24.) While hoplites may not be
the epidemy of ancient warfare technological innovation, they are an important part of the history of
ancient warfare and exemplify Echeverria Rey s argument.
A hoplite is commonly interpreted as the quintessential Greek heavy armed infantry man (Echeverria
2012:292). Originally, the hoplite soldiers were generally expected to provide his own arms and armor
(Bertosa 2003:361). Because of the monetary demand of being a hoplite soldier, a hoplite had to
provide their own equipment such as a spears or shields, the majority of early hoplites were wealthy
farm owners whose main goal was to protect their own land from enemies. The role of a hoplite was
critical in ancient civilization

The Importance Of Righteousness In The Book Of Job
Book of Job
Job was a righteous man who feared God and upheld divine standards. He abounded in gifts of mercy
and acts of godly devotion. Job routinely offered sacrifices to atone for his children s sins. Hence, God
was quite pleased to observe as His servant maintained integrity in his dealings (Carney, 2014). The
Almighty spoke about Job s godly devotion to Satan the Devil. It was then that the latter questioned
Job s motives. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was primarily concerned with selfish interests. The
Devil accused God of providing inordinate protection to his servant. In this regard, the Almighty was
presumed to have bribed Job. God saw it fit to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job to test the patriarch
s motives (Carney, 2014). In this essay, I will highlight the significance of righteousness in the debates
between Job and his friends.
Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous
standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children
died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances.
Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to curse
God and die. Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was determined to
intensify his physical attacks on Job. The patriarch was struck with a debilitating illness that subjected
him to constant pain (Carney, 2014).

The Importance of Market Research
Market research refers to the process of carrying out extensive research to determine whether goods
and services are likely to satisfy customer requirements (Arora Mahankale, 2013). It is way of making
sure that a new or existing business rolls out products or services that will have a positive impact in
the market. Therefore, market research is an important requirement to both new and existing business
holdings. In the case of new businesses, one is likely to get financial assistance if they have done
proper research on the market. This information can be used to guarantee the success of a new
business. Market research is fundamental step that should be taken by all business because of the
benefits that come with it (Beri, 2008). The main argument in the paper is that market research is an
essential part of a business regardless of whether they are new or not. First, it would be important to
explore the concept of market research before going deep to outline its benefits. Basically, there two
types of market research, which are Primary Market Research and Secondary Market Research. A
research on a particular market is likely to return qualitative and quantitative information. Qualitative
information involves opinions obtained from different people in the market through interviews and
surveys. Primary Market Research entails interviewing or talking to customers to get their thoughts on
a new product. In most cases, this kind of research will give qualitative

Environmental Effects Of Plastics Essay
ng produced at alarming rates recently and according to (Jenna Jambeck) over 275 million metric tons

environment, animals, where does it go? There are 7 types of plastic according to Mercola; Plastic #1:
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is things like water bottles and condiment containers, this plastic is
listed as safe but can leach chemicals during production. Plastic #2: High Density Polyethylene
(HDPE) is used for milk, juice, and shampoo bottles, these are considered as a low level of toxicity.
Plastic #3: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) these plastics are used for plastic wrap, plastic toys, some
medication containers. PVC is considered semi toxic and releases hormonal toxins that can alter
someone s hormones. Plastic #4: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), used for bags, milk cartons, and
garbage bags it is very low toxicity. Plastic #5: Polypropylene (PP), is used for yogurt and similar
containers and is found to release some toxins.Plastic #6: Polystyrene (PS) , this is styrofoam and is
very bad it can release styrene which can damage the nervous system and is linked to cancer.
Temperature also plays a role because when styrofoam is at a low temperature less is leaked and when
at a high temperature more is leaked. Plastic #7: any other plastic or combination of plastics this one is
dangerous because you don t know what is in it and what chemicals you could be coming in contact

The Significance And Meanings Behind The Use Of Symbols
The significance and meanings behind the use of symbols and iconography within Western
Christianity and Buddhism has evolved in the depiction of Christ and Buddha. The purpose of this
essay is to compare some key elements of Christian and Buddhist symbolism as pertaining to the
meaning of concept of God, the soul, suffering, and their view of religious concepts.
Concept of God First let s look the idea of God. According to the Christian religion God is divine and
is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscience and that man was made in his image. Christianity s
approach is that man was created by an external God in which the goal of the Christian s life is to be
one with God. This oneness with God is considered to be attainable by following the ... Show more

By following these teachings each Christian individual soul will be redeemed by the second coming of
Jesus, the Messiah, who will save the all Christian Souls providing everlasting life. This relationship
between the external God and the existence of an eternal, individual soul, the self, which will go to
either Heaven or Hell, is what drives the Christian faith.
The best way to look at the Buddhist conception of the individual being is to examine what he
observed as the three signs of existence. The first of the three signs is that of dukkha, the universality
of suffering . As an example of this concept of universal suffering is that of the death of a friend or
loved one, it is fair to say that all human beings have suffered this sorrow hence the universality of
suffering. The second sign of existence is that of Anicca this meaning the impermanence of the self.
This the reality that nothing is permanent in life that it is constantly changing and this goes without
exception for all things. For example we are constantly going through different challenges in life and
when one is overcome another one will arise. We go through the aging process. We die. This is the
concept that the only constant in life is change. The final third and final sign of existence is that of
Anatman which literally means no self or no soul. This concept is quite different than Christianity
view of the individual whom is defined as a permanent being

Online BSN to DNP Programs: A Solution for the High Level Talent Shortage
In the United States, more than 58 million citizens live in areas that are classified as primary care
shortage areas. These regions, official labeled Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), fail to
maintain a sufficient talent pool of primary care providers as outlined by federal guidelines. According
to a report issued by the Kaiser Foundation, Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) have the potential to
fill this void. As of 2012, approximately 127,000 APNs deliver treatment in the country and 60,400 of
those practitioners server as primary care providers (PCPs). Although these professionals can serve as

Duck Hunting Essay
Duck hunting is an absolute passion for me and nothing could possibly interrupt this annual event. For
me, sitting out in a duck blind at 5:30 in the morning with the brisk cold air biting at my skin is
something I look forward to each and every year. Even having to break through a layer of thin ice to
make it out to my blind never gets old. The frigid cold on my hands can get unbearable at times, but
the possibility of frostbite is never at the forefront of my thoughts. After all, when the ducks start to
fly, nothing can force me off the lake.
My passion for duck hunting began when I met Bruce, a friend of my dad s who introduced me to the
sport. He is a phenomenal man who really has a brilliant knowledge in the sport of duck ... Show more

At exactly 11:54 a.m., we heard the echoing sound of shotguns. Although it wasn t noon, Bruce was
blowing duck calls like they were going out of style. Shots were being fired from almost every
member of our group, and Bruce was dropping a flock of Mallards into our decoys.
After the initial excitement had settled down, the dogs came back with only five retrieved ducks.
Instead of being disappointed, we were amused. You see, we seemed to have hit more air than ducks.
Maybe if we would have shot the clay pigeons a few more times in target practice, we would have
done better.
As opening day progressed, we improved a lot. Our group ended up five short of the 50 daily limit for
the ten of us. At the end of the hunt, we reminisced about the day s events while we cleaned the ducks,
barbecued and laid out our hunting plans for day two.
Day two arrived a lot sooner than we had expected. Since opening day was complete, additional
hunting hours could now begin at sunrise. When we got out to the blind, the ducks were once again
thick in the air. I don t know why, but as I was sitting in the blind, I remembered a quote I had read in
a Field and Streams magazine. The quote was A successful hunt can not be successful without a
successful duck caller. I have never found a quote to be truer. From day two on, it became my motto.
Bruce continued to call the ducks into our decoys

There was once a man and a woman who had wished and hoped for a child. In the home of the man

The Hero s Journey In Whirligig By Paul Fleischman
In stories, there is always a pattern that they all have in common. This certain pattern is known as the
Hero s Journey. There are varying descriptions of the Hero s Journey steps but only the steps that are
set by the teacher is used. These steps are the The Call , Allies , Preparation , The Guardians of the
Threshold , Crossing the Threshold , Road of Trials , Saving Experience , Transformation , and
Sharing the Gift .This essay is explaining what the Hero s Journey is in the book Whirligig by Paul
Fleischman. The step that is coming up is the Call which is when the hero starts their journey.
The Call occurs when Mrs. Zamora requests Brent to make the whirligigs in the corners of the United
States. For example, Mrs. Zamora tells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this sentence, you can see that Brent only prepared materials to build the whirligig. This shows
that Brent is prepared to go on his journey because he has all of his necessaries in his luggage for the
quest. Also, this shows that Brent still is self conscious, comparing others to him. Therefore his
preparation is done, and he next needs to cross the Threshold blocking him from starting his quest.
There are no Guardians of the Threshold in this story unless Brent s parents are counted in the first
place. The book stated that Brent s parent raised one objection after another (Fleischman 41). The
Guardians of the Threshold usually prevents the hero from going on his quest, and this statement
shows that Brent s parents are objecting on the quest. If their objection is fulfilled, Brent wouldn t
have gone on the quest at first. This fits the standards of being the Guardians of the Threshold but
nothing is done. In conclusion, it could be called the Guardians of the Threshold by some.
A main problem in Brent s journey that is a Threshold of sorts is that he s self conscious. He doesn t
believe he has much of a future after his journey and compares to other people. In the book, it says He
was no longer of their kind and never will be (Fleischman 36). This sentence proves that he feels

Managed Care Payment Systems
Managed Care Payment System: A Critique
Richard Schulz
HCS 521 Health Care Infrastructure
University of Phoenix
Professor Jay Littleton
December 9, 2006
Introduction Individual payments for health care services received have undergone many changes over
the past one hundred and fifty years in this country. For many years a fee for service system was in
place. This was acceptable at the time because costs were low. However, as costs began to rise,
changes in the system occurred as well. Private insurance companies started to form in the 1920s to
help consumers afford medical care when needed. Through several evolutions over the years and due
to increased costs of medical care, we saw new market oriented public policy ... Show more content

Compared to Medicare fee for service, managed care plans typically cover more services and impose
lower out of pocket costs but is limited to the providers authorized by their plan (Scanlon, 1998). The
question of quality of care and services provided started to chink away at the armor of managed care.
The Balance Budget Act also played a role in determining the amount of services to be offered.
Research proved that plans were being overcompensated. Discrepancies arose from a wide difference
of payments due to location. The BBA realigned how it made payments for managed care. The result
may be a decrease in services provided (Scanlon, 1998). The dissatisfaction with managed care for
some consumers has resulted in the change of some insurance plans altogether. Significant numbers of
health plans have reduced their reliance on managed care tools at a time when health insurance
premiums have returned to double digit rates of growth in many markets. Faced with fewer
instruments for curbing utilization and constraining provider payments, health plans have attempted to
mitigate premium growth by shifting costs to consumers. These developments promise to lighten the
administrative and financial burdens that managed care has imposes on physicians and hospitals,
while leading consumers to

Compare and Contrast Between Classical India and China Essay

The Gupta s promoted Sanskrit, which became the language of educated people, but this, did not
change the diversity of popular, regional languages. Both India and China were technologically
advanced in their societies with new inventions and ideas. Economic relationships between classical
China and India were similar and almost seemed to rely on one another. India was considered the
center of trade . Most trade routes were all passing through and dependent on India. Indian emphasis
on trade and merchant activity was far more than in China, and also greater in the classical
Mediterranean world. During the Maurya rule, India expanded their trade between the main centers of
civilization Eurasia and Africa. Some products produced at one end of the system, such as Chinese
silks and porcelains, were carried the whole length of the trading networks to be sold at the other end
of the routes, in Rome. As a result, China and India both had to work together and figure out a way to
make sure and help each other because both civilizations depended on each other for different things.
Social classifications and expectations between classical china and classical India were very similar to
each other. Both classical China and classical India had what is called a caste system. A caste system
is when a citizen is organized into a special group that determined everything from their job, to their
political rights, to their religious beliefs, and who they would marry.

Strengths:
Starwood has created a brand name for itself worldwide and has been able to gain a high number of
loyal customers. The group has provided good service to customers and has received a number of
positive feedbacks from the customers. The popularity of the group is seen clearly by its ranking in the
Worldwide Top 10 hotels.
Starwood has over 897 hotels worldwide which shows the large operational scale. Starwood has

There is a major growth possible in the developing countries (Ferguson and Hlavinka, 2006). This
would help them improve market presence and also help them spread their brand far and wide across
the world. The travel and tourism industry is a booming one here and the company will be able to
make its mark in the area.
The group has large opportunities to get into franchising with third party to spread the brand. Also
opening of restaurants would help them create more public awareness and help the brand be
popularized (Ferguson and Hlavinka, 2006).
The business travel that was affected by the drop of the US markets can now be recovered and
improved. This would open up avenues for the Element hotels that specifically deal with business
travelers.
Also a small part of Starwood s revenues are earned from resort ownership. This now is set for rapid
growth, which should also help increase the revenues.
Threats:
Starwood has shown a good growth rate of 3.0%, according to figures in table 1. However competitors
growth rate is a threat to the group as well. In table 1 Hilton has shown a growth of 5.30% increase in
rooms in one year, this could cause a major threat to the group.
As mentioned above, the company has over 50% of its operations in US, this makes it very dependent
on the US markets and adverse happening in the markets would also affect the company to a great

Wiz Khalifa Biography
When I heard about the band, Artic Rush, on their tour called, Freeze the World, I was immediately
intrigued. I then made my way to Seattle, WA on June 20, 2016, to see if band was all it s cracked up
to be. The first thing I noticed multiple different was the tickets were an extraordinary price of only
$75! That is outrageously cheap for the quality of the show. The lead singer, Jimmy Buffet has an
amazing voice with multiple personalities shown in the different songs. On the guitar is Wiz Khalifa
who has many electrifying solos and plays with fire in his heart. The keyboardist, Drake, doesn t get
much credit but in the background of each song you can clearly hear his smooth keyboard style played
with perfection. Kanye West also has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The great thing was there was snow in June! That created an amazing experience that will certainly
not be forgotten. The band then performed their big hit known across the nation called, A Touch of Ice.
The atmosphere during the show had me electrified and made me get on my feet. The most memorable
part to me was when Wiz Khalifa froze the crowd with his outstanding guitar solo. The next song
entitled, Icy Roads, was a song that Jimmy Buffet really sung his heart out. It was a slower song than,
A Touch of Ice, with a whole different, smooth style. Lasers, lasers, lasers! While the song went on,
there was an eye grabbing laser show! The crowd would see lasers of all colors, glistening across the
arena! Unfortunately, during the show, one of the speakers died, freezing all action. That was the only
disappointing thing to me, and if they make sure that doesn t happen again, the show will be perfect!
After the show Drake told reporters, I feel like we played our hearts out on the stage. There are still
people who deserve just as much praise as we do and they are the people backstage. They make sure

Essay on Psychological Egoism
Psychological Egoism
The descriptive claim made by Psychological Egoists is that humans, by nature, are motivated only by
self interest. Any act, no matter how altruistic it may seem on the outside is actually only a disguise
for a selfish desire such as recognition, avoiding guilt, reward or sense of personal goodness or
morality. For example, Mother Teresa is just using the poor for her own long term spiritual gain. Being
a universal claim, it could falter with a single counterexample. And being that I believe this claim to
be bunk I will tell you why!
If I help a friend out of trouble, there is a chance that I would feel happy afterwards. But was that
happiness the motive for my actions or just the result? I didn t ... Show more content on

Furthermore, how can one know with any certainty that they are acting in their ultimate self interest?
What they do could me in their immediate self interest, but could work against them in the future,
knowingly or unknowingly.
Also, when a situation arises in which one must make a split decision, does the psychological egoist
expect a human to deliberate whether the action is in their self interest or not? For example, if I see my
child run out onto a busy street and I can see that if I run out and grab her I can save her life and if I do
not, my child will be squished by a speeding car. Do I, as the egoist would expect, take the time to
deliberate that saving my child will result in all kinds of good for both her and I? No, I rush out and
grab her in an instant and the good comes later. Now of course it is true that we sometimes get
satisfaction and/or good feelings from acting unselfishly, but it would be a post hoc fallacy to say that
we perform unselfish acts solely for the sake of that satisfaction. Also, self interest and an interest for
the welfare of others can certainly be bedfellows, and not strange ones. Using the shopkeeper
example, he could opt never cheat his customers simply because he knows that honesty is good for
business. He could cheat his customers and make a boatload of money, but he knows that it is wrong
to cheat and lie to people it hurts them, is unfair and may make him feel guilty. So, self interest or
selfishness is not

Themistocles Oedipus In The Persian Expedition
In The Persian Expedition, Xenophon follows the fate of 10,000 Greek mercenaries as they make their
long and arduous journey from deep in Persian territory back to Greece, their homeland. In addition to
details of the trip, Xenophon discusses some personal qualities of Cyrus and the leaders of his
mercenary s. Themistocles was an Athenian politician from a slightly earlier period who rose to
prominence using his cunning, cleverness, persuasion, and deception. Presented favorably by Plutarch
in The Rise and Fall of Athens: Nine Greek Lives, and critically in The Histories of Herodotus,

Xenophon s main reason for disliking Menon was his deceitfulness and dishonest nature: The shortest
road to the achievement of his desires lay he thought through false swearing, lying, and cheating
(Xenophon, 2.6). Xenophon also valued the honesty of Cyrus. He would tell no lies to anyone
(Xenophon, 1.9). Themistocles was also deceitful and willing to do whatever was necessary to
survive, as illustrated by his clever trick in Salamis: so he cast around for a counter stroke and hit
upon his celebrated trick Siccinus (Plutarch ,3.12). Even when Themistocles did not lie outright, he
valued his manipulative powers: Themistocles told them that he had brought two gods, persuasion and
compulsion (Plutarch, 3.21). He used his cunning to get his way, threatening to lie to get the sailors in
trouble if they crossed him: but partly by entreaties and partly by the threat that he would denounce
them to the Athenians and make it appear that they had known all along who he was, but had taken
him on board in the first instance for a bribe, he forced them to stand out to sea and reach the coast of
Asia (Plutarch, 3.25). Themistocles, though brilliant and clever, resorted to lying and manipulation
when honesty was not productive enough, in contrast to the truth telling Cyrus, whom Xenophon

Gross Domestic Product
I. Introduction
1. Introduction and objectives
The wealth and success of a country is something that theoretically is very hard to measure and
quantify. However, tools called Indexes can be used to report on the past, present or future state of
country. The usage for these Indexes is quite obvious: they can be used to benchmark the situation of a
country compared to its peers, create historical trends in order to estimate if any improvements have
been made throughout the years in multiple fields. Of course, they can also be used as political tools
for the world leaders for internal purposes (linked to government policies) but also external policies as
it can be a mean to determine the power that a country can have on the international level. The main
Index that has been used for the past 80 years and is still used nowadays to measure the economic
wealth is the Gross Domestic Product (or GDP). It is important to remember that the initial goal of
these indexes (and particularly the GDP) is to measure and give a detailed report of the addition,
subtraction and multiplication of certain numbers that compose a country s economy. Therefore, a
measurement tool is not an end goal in itself.
Nevertheless, this index became the reason for an international competition between countries to
decide which one is the most able to bring this number to the maximum. This might not be an issue if
the GDP was not mainly a measurement of the economic wealth of a country. During the years, new

The Impact Of Education In The Middle Ages
During the time of the Middle Ages, life as a citizen saw little to no change. With the feudal system in
place, people were born into different social classes like Lords, Knights, and Serfs. However, it was
extremely difficult, if not impossible, to move up in one s class. Once someone was born into a
specific role in society, people believed that it was his or her fate to remain in that class. Also, society
was not progressing. One example of this can be seen in the Black Death. This Black Death, or,
Bubonic Plague, killed off nearly one third of the entire population. Civilians were stunned, and did
not know why this event occurred, or how to solve the problem. Nobody could figure out how to stop
the disease, because no medical advancements were taking place, and people were uneducated.
Education in the Middle Ages was not available to everyone, so many people were illiterate, causing
society s growth to pause. It became clear that people needed to change their mindset in order for their
lives to be better. This change came in the Renaissance time period, where a significant growth in
many areas of life occurred. The positive growth was so impactful that P.J. O Rourke, an American
political journalist once said, Not much was really invented during the Renaissance, if you don t count
modern civilization. People today look back on the Renaissance, and embrace how it is considered as
a rebirth period. The Renaissance was a turning point for intellectual

Rockville High School Security Essay
Higher security due to the incident at Rockville High Recently at Rockville high school a 14 year old
girl was raped by two older kids in the bathroom. Because of this incident, Montgomery County has
realized how poor the security is in each school. They are enforcing new rules to make the schools
more secure. I agree with the new change in security because some schools might not have security
cameras or guards to protect the school. But, some people also don t agree with the new rules.
I agree that all MCPS schools should increase the security to make things safer in school. Smith said,
safety policies at the school have changed to make roaming the halls between periods more safe.
Schools are increasing security by adding cameras in places that might not have cameras and by hiring

The Lightning Thief Book And Movie Analysis
Movies are Thieves A common goal of Hollywood productions is to attract a vast audience. In order to
earn mass profits from their movies, directors will change any storyline to create an easy to follow,
action filled success. The Lightning Thief novel, written by Rick Riordan, and The Lightning Thief
motion picture provide excellent examples of how books are morphed into classic, money making
attractions. Even though The Lightning Thief book and movie both share main characters and settings,
the book expresses more detail and educates the audience while the movie focuses more on action and
convenience, allowing for more errors between plots. Action is one of many differences found
between the book and the motion picture. The entire plot of the movie revolves around finding and
fighting for the pearls of Persephone, but in the book, Percy, the main character, receives the pearls as
a gift on behalf of his father for use in a time of trouble. The settings and opponents faced by Percy
and his companions, Annabeth and Grover, are the same: Medusa at the Emporium, Hydra at the
Parthenon replica, and the Lotus eaters at the casino. However, the reward for winning in the book is
survival, not a pearl as portrayed in the movie. Another example is the scene involving Hades
Minotaur. Percy is not an experienced fighter at the beginning of the book; therefore, Percy faints after
taking one of the Minotaur s horns. The movie illustrates Percy as a potentially skilled hero in

The Long-Term Causes Of The 1905 Revolution
Many things caused the 1905 revolution. There were a great number of long term issues, short term
issues and recent issues that lead to the revolution. There was a large deal of long term causes of the
1905 revolution. Two of them being the fact that peasants were unhappy with their living conditions
and how land was divided up, and the government s policies to develop industry had negative effects
on people, and were hindered by famine and industrial slumps. Peasants were unhappy with their
living conditions for a large time, with peasants for a large amount of time being slaves until the
emancipation in 1961, in which they were promised land but not given it. Land was not equally spread
amongst Russia s citizens and the nobility held a large amount of land compared to the peasants, even
after the emancipation. This led to discontent with the government and its policies from the peasants.
The government s attempts at industrialising Russia also were a long term cause in the 1905
revolution. 3 officials attempted to industrialise Russia through different methods. They attempted to

social, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Violence, aggression, and substance abuse between
members of the family have been continued patterns of family life. I want to see the outcome of how
children interact, cope or deal with life after living in a domestic abuse or substance abuse situation.
As teachers it is our duty to call child protective services or call the number for domestic abuse when
we see a child hurt or bruised. The research objectives were to examine if and how they identify,
assess and meet the needs of children and our young people who are vulnerable as a result of domestic
abuse, to identify gaps in service provision and professional practice and make recommendations for
improvement ( Peckover p. 401). As a teacher we have to make sure to teach slowly and gain the child
s trust if they came from an abusive family. We have to gain their trust in order to speak to them, give
comfort to them without them cringing, and to make sure to say that we are there for that child. When

The Colonization Of Africa During The 19th Century
The Europeans became invested in Africa in the start of the 17th Century when the Dutch established
a port on the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa to grant their ships extended range to
better access the rich Indies. Modern day South Africa, known at the time as Pretoria, was a hotly
contested place among the European powers. Initially there was not much to attract Europeans to the
area besides its great strategic location. Dutch settlers, also known as Boers, were apt to travel inland
and constantly established properties beyond the official borders of their colony. The migration of the
Boers often translated to skirmishes with native African tribes. The British also established a colony
on the Cape of Good Hope. The Brits sometimes brokered treaties and attempted to keep the Boers
and tribes from fighting amongst each other. In the middle of the 19th century Britain controlled the
colonies of the Cape and Natal. The British colonies extended from the Cape to the North and around
the eastern sea shore, nearly to Portuguese Mozambique. The Boers occupied two interior colonies:
The Orange Free State and the Transvaal. The African tribes were positioned in between all of the
colonies. The Zulu For centuries the Zulu tribe, also known as the Zulu Kingdom, had fought
neighboring tribes and became the strongest of them all. The Zulu were located across the Mzinyathi
and Thukela rivers and north of the Natal Territory. In 1824 the leader of the Zulu

Essay On Social Media And Technology
In recent discussions of technology, a controversial issue whether the social media provide a net good
for the society has raised wide concern. Social media, as a kind of new technology, has developed so
fast and affected our society in various aspects, such as the way of communication and self
assessment. On the one hand, some argue that social media is good for the society because it makes
our life more convenient and provide us a new way to know the world. That is true to some extent. For
example, we can see our families or friends who are far from us via social media, such as Facebook.
From this perspective, social media is good for the society because it helps us keep the relationship
with others, especially people with the long distance. Also, there is much fresh news and information
related to different fields on social media. People can get much new information from the feed on
social media. On the other hand, however, others argue that social media is influencing people
negatively. There is an increasing number of individuals, especially the younger generation, being
addicted to social media. One of this view s main proponents argues, technology addiction is labeled,
when the use is beyond the control and causing harm or impairment. This is a serious problem so we
have to think about the solutions to it. According to this view, people s health, especially the mental
health is under threat. People who are addicted to technology have to check their social media

Media s Growing Sexualization Of Women
If you turn on the television or flip through a fashion magazine, it is very likely you will presented
with many displays of hypersexualization of girls and women in advertising images and in media.
There are many components to sexualization. It occurs, according to the American Psychological
Association, when a person s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behavior, to the
exclusion of other characteristics. This person is held to a standard that equates physical attractiveness
with being sexy. Sexualization happens when a person is sexually objectified that is, made into a thing
for others sexual use, rather than being seen as a person with their own independent actions and
abilities to make decisions. Oftentimes, sexuality is inappropriately imposed upon a person without
their knowing it or consent. Sometimes, researchers use the word hypersexualization to describe
roughly the same idea. In the article, Media s Growing Sexualization of Women , hypersexualization
is defined as, The act of making something extremely sexual and erotic. The hypersexualization of
females is fairly prevalent across different cultures. The media seems to be bombarded by it;
magazines are plastered with risque images of barely clothed woman and even young girls. In 2011, a

award suits him best. A Long Way Gone tells the story of a young boy who experiences war for years
without any family and only the hope of living to find them one day. The story begins with the terrible
happening of rebel attacks while Ishmael is far from his family. He had travelled to this city near his
home to attend a talent show. Soon, as they return, they take notice of the attacks and have no choice
rather than fleeing far from their home. Accompanied by his older brother and a few friends, they
suffer in staying alive while trying to keep away from the war the best they can. With no map, they
begin their journey. Hunger, fear,

Rwandan Conflicts And The Effects Of African Conflict In...
05. EFFECTS OF AFRICAN CONFLICTS:
The effects of conflicts in terms of refugee flows into neighbouring countries and the emergence of
internally displaced persons (IDPs) has demonstrated that no African country is an island unto itself .
Refugee camps in the Mano River Union region of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have served as
source of instability for countries in the region. It is estimated that there are close to three million
refugees in central Africa alone. The camps in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from the
Rwandan genocide of 1994, remain a source of concern for all the key actors involved in the Great
Lakes region. 200,000 refugees have spilled into Chad as a result of the violent conflict in Sudan s
Darfur region, creating tension along the border. Dadaab(Kenya) hosts people that have fled various
conflicts in the larger Eastern Africa region. Most have come as a consequence of the civil war in
southern Somalia, including both Somalis and members of Somalia s various ethnic minority groups
such as the Bantu. These situations illustrate the need for effective post conflict reconstruction
processes and the institutions to back them up. IDPs and refugees make it difficult for host
communities and displaced communities to settle down and initiate development. Therefore, a central
pillar of post conflict reconstruction is the incorporation of IDPs and refugees into the host community
or the repatriation of refugees, after consideration of possible

US Prison System Essay
US Prison System There are many people who are critical of the US s prison sysetm; the idea of
locking up those who commit crimes against a society simply to keep them from doing harm. Many
say that more rehabilatation is necessary to improve these individuals and, therefore, society as a
whole. What are some ways of doing this? Do you agree/disagree with this view and why? Is the
prison system currently in place the best option for society? 2 pages, double spaced, 12pt. font.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can t make it drink. Everyone knows that you can t help
someone unless they want to help themselves. When the prison system was first established, the
possibilities in rehabilitation were nothing like they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People often say about celebrities or political figures, They are not above the law. This is true, no one
is above the law, but the law was made by other humans just like you and me and humans make
mistakes...a lot.
The prison system is something that you would have had to experienced to know enough about to
judge whether it is the best option for society. My outsider and nieve view is that there is no perfect
way to deal with people that hurt other people. God says to forgive thy enemy and love him as your
brother. That is practically unrealistic in our world for anyone. Hanging outlaws is no longer an easy
solution to crime.
No one should be caged like an animal, animals shouldn t either for that matter, but when someone
violates/abuses another person s rights; they deserve to have their rights taken away. To have your
freedom taken away may be worse than death. At least in death you are free. If there were a better
option, someone would have thought of it by now.
An idea that was followed through was the electric ankle brace, in which people who commit
misdometers(eg. cable theft), or are on parole are on house arrest. They cannot leave at certain times
and if they do, the ankle brace sends an alerts the police.
This option is all anyone could come up with? People have been murdered due to the fact some felons
were let out on the ankle brace when they should have been locked up where they couldn t do any
harm to anyone but

Essay on The Speckled Band and The Man with the Twisted Lip
Examine the settings which Arthur Conan Doyle has chosen for his stories in The Speckled Band and
The Man with the Twisted Lip. Consider the effects the writer has created and how they contribute to
the atmosphere. Arthur Conan Doyle s character, Sherlock Holmes, lived in Victorian London during
the 19th century. His perception of the streets is portrayed as a dark and isolated environment. The
atmosphere was far from welcoming. The streets were overrun with crime, beggars and prostitutes.
Through the dense smog, the gas lamps provided feeble lighting which flickered as passer bys walked
on their way. The odour which drifted through the air was vile. This was the result of no sewage
system and low levels of hygiene. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A.C. Doyle reinforces its undesirable presence by describing it as vile . The reader will instantly see
that it is a dirty, eerie place where no one would want to be. It is also personified as lurking which
gives it a sense of hidden mystery. Holmes and Watson s journey is prolonged and tiresome as they
travel through: the endless succession of sombre and deserted streets This description is effective
because it makes the reader think of the continuous series of streets which have no definite end and
lead to nowhere. The adjective sombre makes the reader think of a dull, dismal space containing
emptiness. Everything Watson and Holmes pass along their way appears to be gloomy and depressing:
another dull wilderness of bricks , ...a dull wrack. , star twinkled dimly Stars are expected to be bright,
however here it is described in a contrasting manner. Although it is twinkling, it is still dim. The
reader may imagine that these streets are so dismal not even the brightest star could appear as it is. As
the reader is taken to the setting of the opium den, it feels as if they have been lead to an even more
discomforting place. The steps lead: down to a black gap It is like being transported to a cold and
sinister place. The reader is given the feeling of being taken down to hell. They are unaware of what
lies beneath,

Examples Of Optimism In The Book Unbroken
Imagine floating on a raft in the middle of the ocean. You are famished and dehydrated and on the
brink of death. Sores cover your sunburnt skin, and sharks surround the raft waiting for you to fall in.
But somehow you remain optimistic. You find happiness in the little things. Perhaps a rain storm
passed and you were able to drink and collect water. Maybe you caught a fish or a bird to eat. It s the
little things that are keeping you alive. This is how Louie and Phil were in Laura Hillenbrand s
Unbroken. They were both very optimistic about the situation. However, their friend Mac was very
pessimistic. He would not talk, ate all the chocolate rations, and was just trying to protect himself. All
of these men were able bodied, fit, and received ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Louie and Phil used all of their strength to overcome the obstacles they went through, both physically
and mentally. Their physical strength was tested throughout their entire journey. Being stranded on the
ocean took the initial toll on Louie and Phil s bodies by diminishing them down to 67 87 and 80
pounds, respectively. Both of them had weighed around 150 pounds when they had crashed. Louie s
mental strength was tested as well. He started to have hallucinations of people singing in the clouds,
most likely due to dehydration. The two retained their strength though, by focusing on their survival
and trying to remain sane. Their optimism also had a great influence on how strong they were. In Ruth
Robertson s (2016) article The Strength of Optimism she states, There are many benefits to having a
more optimistic mindset. Research tells us that it can lengthen your life, determine how you overcome
life s obstacles, build resilience and manage the risks of developing depressive disorders and other
mental health issues (para. 3). Robertson is saying that optimism can help you through the hard times
that life throws at us. A positive mindset can transform a life or death situation. Louie even retained a
lot of physical strength while he was in the prisoner of war camps. Near the end of his imprisonment
he would have to carry literal tons back and forth for hours. The Bird, one of the Japanese guards and

Always Ad Analysis Essay
Introduction Always is a company that sells and makes pads, tampons, and liners for women and
young girls on their monthly cycle. This ad is effective because they are targeting young girls who
have the same questions about their monthly cycle. They want to make them feel less worried as much
as they can. I found this ad on YouTube from always verified account. Monthly cycles can be very
overwhelming when first starting it because the thought of it and seeing blood can freak a person out.
This ad is very helpful for young girls to make them feel more comfortable about what choice of pads
to use to help them get through the rough days from their monthly cycle. Also, to help them better
understand that it is possible to still live a normal life and to not let the monthly cycle interfere with
their daily activities or habits. Physical Description The main character in this advertisement is a

how she was concerned it would never come because she was almost fourteen years old. She was
worried that she couldn t do things the same way she did it before because of the monthly cycle. This

Essay on African Diaspora
Part 1: Question one is what is the African diaspora? (Who should be considered in the African
diaspora? How is this like the black Atlantic and how is it different?). Students should use the Colin
Palmer piece to answer this question. In its most recognizable form, the African diaspora refers to the
many cultures and societies abroad that exist throughout the world as the result of the historic
movement, mostly forced, of native Africans to other parts of the globe. Most specifically, the African
diaspora is the blanket term used to represent a confluence of events that led to the forced
displacement of millions of innocent people. The term first originated in the 1950s and initial studies
focused on the dispersal of people of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No diasporic community manifests all of these characteristics or shares with the same intensity an
identity with its scattered ancestral kin. In many respects, diasporas are not actual but imaginary and
symbolic communities and political constructs; it is we who often call them into being. (Palmer) It is
essential to note that the term African Diaspora does not describe any single event, group of people or
set of customs. It represents a current state of being for many citizens of the world and provides
context for understanding the social structures and intercultural relationships of the world we live in
today. Collin Palmer provides great insight into the context of diaspora. He writes that there have been
several movements, massive migrations of people, throughout history. There is no single diasporic
movement or monolithic diasporic community to be studied, but rather a confluence of people, events
and ideologies that span thousands of years, across every continent. Each period of movement, each
diasporic stream, happened for different reasons. Palmer s approach to the African Diaspora begins
with a look nearly 100,000 years into the past. He identifies five major streams, with the first African
diaspora that occurred as a

  • 2. `` Weapons, Technology Determination And Ancient Warfare `` Technological Determination and Hoplites Logically, it makes sense that the army with the most advanced technology would win battles against a less equipped one. However, in his paper titled Weapons, Technology Determination and Ancient Warfare, Fernando Echeverria Rey brings to light the paradox of this idea in ancient warfare, as well as undermine the modern idea of technological determinism by claiming that it does not have an ancient equivalent. His argument approaches the study of ancient warfare from different perspectives as he [offers] alternative ways to explain technological and tactical change in warfare (Echeverria 2010: 24). Echeverria Rey makes strong points for his arguments and supports his ideas clearly. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the political level and structural level entail that ancient communities were determined by military factors (Echeverria 2010:22) and that these military factors produce and explain broader socio political change (Echeverria 2010:22) respectively. By focusing in on the battlefield level in his paper, Echeverria Rey stresses the distinction between these three levels and maintains clarity in his argument. He supports his argument by also putting to the test the assumptions, that first some kinds of weapons and tactics are objectively superior to others and that secondly, societies are always trying to create or import such superior weapons and tactics (Echeverria 2010:24.) While hoplites may not be the epidemy of ancient warfare technological innovation, they are an important part of the history of ancient warfare and exemplify Echeverria Rey s argument. A hoplite is commonly interpreted as the quintessential Greek heavy armed infantry man (Echeverria 2012:292). Originally, the hoplite soldiers were generally expected to provide his own arms and armor (Bertosa 2003:361). Because of the monetary demand of being a hoplite soldier, a hoplite had to provide their own equipment such as a spears or shields, the majority of early hoplites were wealthy farm owners whose main goal was to protect their own land from enemies. The role of a hoplite was critical in ancient civilization ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Righteousness In The Book Of Job Book of Job Job was a righteous man who feared God and upheld divine standards. He abounded in gifts of mercy and acts of godly devotion. Job routinely offered sacrifices to atone for his children s sins. Hence, God was quite pleased to observe as His servant maintained integrity in his dealings (Carney, 2014). The Almighty spoke about Job s godly devotion to Satan the Devil. It was then that the latter questioned Job s motives. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was primarily concerned with selfish interests. The Devil accused God of providing inordinate protection to his servant. In this regard, the Almighty was presumed to have bribed Job. God saw it fit to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job to test the patriarch s motives (Carney, 2014). In this essay, I will highlight the significance of righteousness in the debates between Job and his friends. Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to curse God and die. Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was determined to intensify his physical attacks on Job. The patriarch was struck with a debilitating illness that subjected him to constant pain (Carney, 2014). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance of Market Research Market research refers to the process of carrying out extensive research to determine whether goods and services are likely to satisfy customer requirements (Arora Mahankale, 2013). It is way of making sure that a new or existing business rolls out products or services that will have a positive impact in the market. Therefore, market research is an important requirement to both new and existing business holdings. In the case of new businesses, one is likely to get financial assistance if they have done proper research on the market. This information can be used to guarantee the success of a new business. Market research is fundamental step that should be taken by all business because of the benefits that come with it (Beri, 2008). The main argument in the paper is that market research is an essential part of a business regardless of whether they are new or not. First, it would be important to explore the concept of market research before going deep to outline its benefits. Basically, there two types of market research, which are Primary Market Research and Secondary Market Research. A research on a particular market is likely to return qualitative and quantitative information. Qualitative information involves opinions obtained from different people in the market through interviews and surveys. Primary Market Research entails interviewing or talking to customers to get their thoughts on a new product. In most cases, this kind of research will give qualitative ... The Significance And Meanings Behind The Use Of Symbols The significance and meanings behind the use of symbols and iconography within Western Christianity and Buddhism has evolved in the depiction of Christ and Buddha. The purpose of this essay is to compare some key elements of Christian and Buddhist symbolism as pertaining to the meaning of concept of God, the soul, suffering, and their view of religious concepts. Concept of God First let s look the idea of God. According to the Christian religion God is divine and is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscience and that man was made in his image. By following these teachings each Christian individual soul will be redeemed by the second coming of Jesus, the Messiah, who will save the all Christian Souls providing everlasting life. This relationship between the external God and the existence of an eternal, individual soul, the self, which will go to either Heaven or Hell, is what drives the Christian faith. The best way to look at the Buddhist conception of the individual being is to examine what he observed as the three signs of existence. The first of the three signs is that of dukkha, the universality of suffering . As an example of this concept of universal suffering is that of the death of a friend or loved one, it is fair to say that all human beings have suffered this sorrow hence the universality of suffering. The second sign of existence is that of Anicca this meaning the impermanence of the self. This the reality that nothing is permanent in life that it is constantly changing and this goes without exception for all things. For example we are constantly going through different challenges in life and when one is overcome another one will arise. We go through the aging process. We die. This is the concept that the only constant in life is change. The final third and final sign of existence is that of Anatman which literally means no self or no soul. This concept is quite different than Christianity view of the individual whom is defined as a permanent being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For me, sitting out in a duck blind at 5:30 in the morning with the brisk cold air biting at my skin is something I look forward to each and every year. Even having to break through a layer of thin ice to make it out to my blind never gets old. The frigid cold on my hands can get unbearable at times, but the possibility of frostbite is never at the forefront of my thoughts. After the initial excitement had settled down, the dogs came back with only five retrieved ducks. Instead of being disappointed, we were amused. You see, we seemed to have hit more air than ducks. Maybe if we would have shot the clay pigeons a few more times in target practice, we would have done better. As opening day progressed, we improved a lot. Our group ended up five short of the 50 daily limit for the ten of us. At the end of the hunt, we reminisced about the day s events while we cleaned the ducks, barbecued and laid out our hunting plans for day two. Day two arrived a lot sooner than we had expected. Since opening day was complete, additional hunting hours could now begin at sunrise. When we got out to the blind, the ducks were once again thick in the air. I don t know why, but as I was sitting in the blind, I remembered a quote I had read in a Field and Streams magazine. • 15. The Hero s Journey In Whirligig By Paul Fleischman In stories, there is always a pattern that they all have in common. This certain pattern is known as the Hero s Journey. There are varying descriptions of the Hero s Journey steps but only the steps that are set by the teacher is used. These steps are the The Call , Allies , Preparation , The Guardians of the Threshold , Crossing the Threshold , Road of Trials , Saving Experience , Transformation , and Sharing the Gift .This essay is explaining what the Hero s Journey is in the book Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. The step that is coming up is the Call which is when the hero starts their journey. The Call occurs when Mrs. Zamora requests Brent to make the whirligigs in the corners of the United States. For example, Mrs. Zamora tells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this sentence, you can see that Brent only prepared materials to build the whirligig. This shows that Brent is prepared to go on his journey because he has all of his necessaries in his luggage for the quest. Also, this shows that Brent still is self conscious, comparing others to him. Therefore his preparation is done, and he next needs to cross the Threshold blocking him from starting his quest. There are no Guardians of the Threshold in this story unless Brent s parents are counted in the first place. The book stated that Brent s parent raised one objection after another (Fleischman 41). The Guardians of the Threshold usually prevents the hero from going on his quest, and this statement shows that Brent s parents are objecting on the quest. Managed Care Payment Systems Managed Care Payment System: A Critique Richard Schulz HCS 521 Health Care Infrastructure University of Phoenix Professor Jay Littleton December 9, 2006 Introduction Individual payments for health care services received have undergone many changes over the past one hundred and fifty years in this country. For many years a fee for service system was in place. This was acceptable at the time because costs were low. However, as costs began to rise, changes in the system occurred as well. Private insurance companies started to form in the 1920s to help consumers afford medical care when needed. Through several evolutions over the years and due to increased costs of medical care, we saw new market oriented public policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Compared to Medicare fee for service, managed care plans typically cover more services and impose lower out of pocket costs but is limited to the providers authorized by their plan (Scanlon, 1998). The question of quality of care and services provided started to chink away at the armor of managed care. The Balance Budget Act also played a role in determining the amount of services to be offered. Research proved that plans were being overcompensated. Discrepancies arose from a wide difference of payments due to location. The BBA realigned how it made payments for managed care. The result may be a decrease in services provided (Scanlon, 1998). The dissatisfaction with managed care for some consumers has resulted in the change of some insurance plans altogether. Significant numbers of health plans have reduced their reliance on managed care tools at a time when health insurance premiums have returned to double digit rates of growth in many markets. Faced with fewer instruments for curbing utilization and constraining provider payments, health plans have attempted to mitigate premium growth by shifting costs to consumers. These developments promise to lighten the administrative and financial burdens that managed care has imposes on physicians and hospitals, while leading consumers to ... • 23. Essay on Psychological Egoism Psychological Egoism The descriptive claim made by Psychological Egoists is that humans, by nature, are motivated only by self interest. Any act, no matter how altruistic it may seem on the outside is actually only a disguise for a selfish desire such as recognition, avoiding guilt, reward or sense of personal goodness or morality. For example, Mother Teresa is just using the poor for her own long term spiritual gain. Being a universal claim, it could falter with a single counterexample. And being that I believe this claim to be bunk I will tell you why! If I help a friend out of trouble, there is a chance that I would feel happy afterwards. But was that happiness the motive for my actions or just the result? I didn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, how can one know with any certainty that they are acting in their ultimate self interest? What they do could me in their immediate self interest, but could work against them in the future, knowingly or unknowingly. Also, when a situation arises in which one must make a split decision, does the psychological egoist expect a human to deliberate whether the action is in their self interest or not? For example, if I see my child run out onto a busy street and I can see that if I run out and grab her I can save her life and if I do not, my child will be squished by a speeding car. Do I, as the egoist would expect, take the time to deliberate that saving my child will result in all kinds of good for both her and I? No, I rush out and grab her in an instant and the good comes later. Now of course it is true that we sometimes get satisfaction and/or good feelings from acting unselfishly, but it would be a post hoc fallacy to say that we perform unselfish acts solely for the sake of that satisfaction. Also, self interest and an interest for the welfare of others can certainly be bedfellows, and not strange ones. Using the shopkeeper example, he could opt never cheat his customers simply because he knows that honesty is good for business. He could cheat his customers and make a boatload of money, but he knows that it is wrong to cheat and lie to people it hurts them, is unfair and may make him feel guilty. Themistocles was also deceitful and willing to do whatever was necessary to survive, as illustrated by his clever trick in Salamis: so he cast around for a counter stroke and hit upon his celebrated trick Siccinus (Plutarch ,3.12). • 25. Gross Domestic Product I. Introduction 1. Introduction and objectives The wealth and success of a country is something that theoretically is very hard to measure and quantify. However, tools called Indexes can be used to report on the past, present or future state of country. The usage for these Indexes is quite obvious: they can be used to benchmark the situation of a country compared to its peers, create historical trends in order to estimate if any improvements have been made throughout the years in multiple fields. Of course, they can also be used as political tools for the world leaders for internal purposes (linked to government policies) but also external policies as it can be a mean to determine the power that a country can have on the international level. The main Index that has been used for the past 80 years and is still used nowadays to measure the economic wealth is the Gross Domestic Product (or GDP). It is important to remember that the initial goal of these indexes (and particularly the GDP) is to measure and give a detailed report of the addition, subtraction and multiplication of certain numbers that compose a country s economy. Therefore, a measurement tool is not an end goal in itself. Nevertheless, this index became the reason for an international competition between countries to decide which one is the most able to bring this number to the maximum. This might not be an issue if the GDP was not mainly a measurement of the economic wealth of a country. During the years, new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. The Impact Of Education In The Middle Ages During the time of the Middle Ages, life as a citizen saw little to no change. With the feudal system in place, people were born into different social classes like Lords, Knights, and Serfs. However, it was extremely difficult, if not impossible, to move up in one s class. Once someone was born into a specific role in society, people believed that it was his or her fate to remain in that class. Also, society was not progressing. One example of this can be seen in the Black Death. This Black Death, or, Bubonic Plague, killed off nearly one third of the entire population. Civilians were stunned, and did not know why this event occurred, or how to solve the problem. Nobody could figure out how to stop the disease, because no medical advancements were taking place, and people were uneducated. Education in the Middle Ages was not available to everyone, so many people were illiterate, causing society s growth to pause. It became clear that people needed to change their mindset in order for their lives to be better. This change came in the Renaissance time period, where a significant growth in many areas of life occurred. The positive growth was so impactful that P.J. In order to earn mass profits from their movies, directors will change any storyline to create an easy to follow, action filled success. The Lightning Thief novel, written by Rick Riordan, and The Lightning Thief motion picture provide excellent examples of how books are morphed into classic, money making attractions. Even though The Lightning Thief book and movie both share main characters and settings, the book expresses more detail and educates the audience while the movie focuses more on action and convenience, allowing for more errors between plots. Action is one of many differences found between the book and the motion picture. The entire plot of the movie revolves around finding and fighting for the pearls of Persephone, but in the book, Percy, the main character, receives the pearls as a gift on behalf of his father for use in a time of trouble. The settings and opponents faced by Percy and his companions, Annabeth and Grover, are the same: Medusa at the Emporium, Hydra at the Parthenon replica, and the Lotus eaters at the casino. However, the reward for winning in the book is survival, not a pearl as portrayed in the movie. Another example is the scene involving Hades Minotaur. The Colonization Of Africa During The 19th Century The Europeans became invested in Africa in the start of the 17th Century when the Dutch established a port on the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa to grant their ships extended range to better access the rich Indies. Modern day South Africa, known at the time as Pretoria, was a hotly contested place among the European powers. Initially there was not much to attract Europeans to the area besides its great strategic location. Dutch settlers, also known as Boers, were apt to travel inland and constantly established properties beyond the official borders of their colony. The migration of the Boers often translated to skirmishes with native African tribes. The British also established a colony on the Cape of Good Hope. The Brits sometimes brokered treaties and attempted to keep the Boers and tribes from fighting amongst each other. In the middle of the 19th century Britain controlled the colonies of the Cape and Natal. Rapunzel followed the pig to a lake in the middle of nowhere. The pig landed on the shore, where there was a huge house. Rapunzel knew right away it was the sorceress, due to the rapunzel flowers growing in the garden. Rapunzel stealthily went into the compound. She saw the pig land in the pig sty and the sorceress grabbing Cate and going inside. Rapunzel followed them inside and confronted the sorceress. The sorceress said that she wanted to get revenge on Rapunzel by kidnapping her family and tearing her life apart. A bit alarmed by this, Rapunzel conjured up her own magic she learned at the library and summoned a wolf that attacked the sorceress. The sorceress let go off Cate and tried to run away, but was eaten by the wolf. Rapunzel took Cate with her back to the castle, after stopping at McDonald s for a quick ... A large number of students who would never have been accepted into a traditional college, have now been given the opportunity to obtain a degree. Investors who have put money into these failing colleges have profited a great deal. Michael Clifford turned traditional colleges that were in a downward spiral, and close to shutting down into successful for profit schools. Even though the documentary shows a few students who are unhappy with their experiences, it seems that more people have benefited from these colleges than those who have not. ... • 37. Media s Growing Sexualization Of Women If you turn on the television or flip through a fashion magazine, it is very likely you will presented with many displays of hypersexualization of girls and women in advertising images and in media. There are many components to sexualization. It occurs, according to the American Psychological Association, when a person s value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics. This person is held to a standard that equates physical attractiveness with being sexy. Sexualization happens when a person is sexually objectified that is, made into a thing for others sexual use, rather than being seen as a person with their own independent actions and abilities to make decisions. Oftentimes, sexuality is inappropriately imposed upon a person without their knowing it or consent. Sometimes, researchers use the word hypersexualization to describe roughly the same idea. In the article, Media s Growing Sexualization of Women , hypersexualization is defined as, The act of making something extremely sexual and erotic. The hypersexualization of females is fairly prevalent across different cultures. The media seems to be bombarded by it; magazines are plastered with risque images of barely clothed woman and even young girls. In 2011, a French issue of Vogue featured females as young as ten years old as models, Stretched and slinked on an array of animal furs. Their clothing was low cut and revealing. Just because a victim does not speak up about this immediately does not mean it is not true, but some find it truly difficult to speak up because they are afraid. For example, in Oleanna Carol speaks about having a group and the professor then reinstated that this group advised her, so it was a sort of support group for her. A support group is good when it comes to situations like this when you feel alone. • 40. Rwandan Conflicts And The Effects Of African Conflict In... 05. EFFECTS OF AFRICAN CONFLICTS: The effects of conflicts in terms of refugee flows into neighbouring countries and the emergence of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has demonstrated that no African country is an island unto itself . Refugee camps in the Mano River Union region of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have served as source of instability for countries in the region. It is estimated that there are close to three million refugees in central Africa alone. The camps in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from the Rwandan genocide of 1994, remain a source of concern for all the key actors involved in the Great Lakes region. 200,000 refugees have spilled into Chad as a result of the violent conflict in Sudan s Darfur region, creating tension along the border. Dadaab(Kenya) hosts people that have fled various conflicts in the larger Eastern Africa region. Most have come as a consequence of the civil war in southern Somalia, including both Somalis and members of Somalia s various ethnic minority groups such as the Bantu. These situations illustrate the need for effective post conflict reconstruction processes and the institutions to back them up. IDPs and refugees make it difficult for host communities and displaced communities to settle down and initiate development. Therefore, a central pillar of post conflict reconstruction is the incorporation of IDPs and refugees into the host community or the repatriation of refugees, after consideration of possible ... This is true, no one is above the law, but the law was made by other humans just like you and me and humans make mistakes...a lot. The prison system is something that you would have had to experienced to know enough about to judge whether it is the best option for society. My outsider and nieve view is that there is no perfect way to deal with people that hurt other people. God says to forgive thy enemy and love him as your brother. That is practically unrealistic in our world for anyone. Hanging outlaws is no longer an easy solution to crime. No one should be caged like an animal, animals shouldn t either for that matter, but when someone violates/abuses another person s rights; they deserve to have their rights taken away. To have your freedom taken away may be worse than death. At least in death you are free. If there were a better option, someone would have thought of it by now. An idea that was followed through was the electric ankle brace, in which people who commit misdometers(eg. cable theft), or are on parole are on house arrest. They cannot leave at certain times and if they do, the ankle brace sends an alerts the police. This option is all anyone could come up with? Consider the effects the writer has created and how they contribute to the atmosphere. Arthur Conan Doyle s character, Sherlock Holmes, lived in Victorian London during the 19th century. His perception of the streets is portrayed as a dark and isolated environment. The atmosphere was far from welcoming. The streets were overrun with crime, beggars and prostitutes. Through the dense smog, the gas lamps provided feeble lighting which flickered as passer bys walked on their way. The odour which drifted through the air was vile. Sores cover your sunburnt skin, and sharks surround the raft waiting for you to fall in. But somehow you remain optimistic. You find happiness in the little things. Perhaps a rain storm passed and you were able to drink and collect water. Maybe you caught a fish or a bird to eat. It s the little things that are keeping you alive. This is how Louie and Phil were in Laura Hillenbrand s Unbroken. They were both very optimistic about the situation. However, their friend Mac was very pessimistic. Being stranded on the ocean took the initial toll on Louie and Phil s bodies by diminishing them down to 67 87 and 80 pounds, respectively. Both of them had weighed around 150 pounds when they had crashed. Louie s mental strength was tested as well. He started to have hallucinations of people singing in the clouds, most likely due to dehydration. The two retained their strength though, by focusing on their survival and trying to remain sane. Their optimism also had a great influence on how strong they were. In Ruth Robertson s (2016) article The Strength of Optimism she states, There are many benefits to having a more optimistic mindset. • 46. Essay on African Diaspora Part 1: Question one is what is the African diaspora? (Who should be considered in the African diaspora? How is this like the black Atlantic and how is it different?). Students should use the Colin Palmer piece to answer this question. In its most recognizable form, the African diaspora refers to the many cultures and societies abroad that exist throughout the world as the result of the historic movement, mostly forced, of native Africans to other parts of the globe. Most specifically, the African diaspora is the blanket term used to represent a confluence of events that led to the forced displacement of millions of innocent people. No diasporic community manifests all of these characteristics or shares with the same intensity an identity with its scattered ancestral kin. In many respects, diasporas are not actual but imaginary and symbolic communities and political constructs; it is we who often call them into being. (Palmer) It is essential to note that the term African Diaspora does not describe any single event, group of people or set of customs. It represents a current state of being for many citizens of the world and provides context for understanding the social structures and intercultural relationships of the world we live in today. Collin Palmer provides great insight into the context of diaspora. He writes that there have been several movements, massive migrations of people, throughout history. There is no single diasporic movement or monolithic diasporic community to be studied, but rather a confluence of people, events and ideologies that span thousands of years, across every continent. Each period of movement, each diasporic stream, happened for different reasons. Palmer s approach to the African Diaspora begins with a look nearly 100,000 years into the past. He identifies five major streams, with the first African diaspora that occurred as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
