Turkey has a complex democratic system. It has been governed for the past 10 years by a conservative religious government that has become increasingly authoritarian. While some personal freedoms are protected, others have faced increasing restrictions, such as control of the internet and headscarves becoming mandatory in public schools. Political dissent is also suppressed, as seen in the large Gezi Park protests in 2013 that resulted in thousands of arrests and injuries. Economic growth has increased living standards overall, but around 10 million people still live in poverty and unions have limited rights. The rights of Kurds and other minorities are also restricted in areas like education and self-determination.
