This document defines HIV/AIDS and discusses how it is transmitted, who is most at risk, and its impacts. It is transmitted most commonly through unprotected sexual intercourse in Africa. Those most at risk are people with multiple sexual partners in Africa, babies born to HIV-positive mothers in Africa, and intravenous drug users who share needles. HIV/AIDS has had large economic and social impacts through loss of income, healthcare and burial costs for infected households, and more than 13 million AIDS orphans in Africa. Potential solutions include education, testing, safe medical equipment disposal, abstinence or safe sex practices, and alternatives to breastfeeding for HIV-positive mothers.
