Cyprus is a small Mediterranean island with a population of over 1 million people, most of whom speak Greek as Cyprus' official language. In 1974, Turkey invaded and occupied 37% of northern Cyprus, displacing over 150,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes. Many areas like Famagusta remain empty ghost towns today as their original owners have been prevented from returning. Cyprus has a rich cultural tradition including traditional clothing, cuisine, arts and crafts, and is predominantly Christian Orthodox with many historic churches across the island.
