Live Webcast on Jan. 29, 2013
Despite its name, effective Data Science requires a certain amount of artistic flair. Analysts must be creative about how and where they find the insights that will drive business value. One classic roadblock to that kind of frictionless process? Programming. Not everyone can code Java, which makes the unstructured domain of Hadoop quite challenging for the average business analyst.
Check out the slides from this episode of the Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst Dr. Robin Bloor explain how a new generation of analytical platforms will solve the complexity of unifying structured and unstructured data. He'll be briefed by Steve Wooledge of Teradata Aster who will tout his company's Big Data Appliance, which leverages the SQL-H bridge, an innovation designed to connect Hadoop with SQL.

This talk introduces Linked Data and Semantic Web by using two examples - population sciences grid and semantAqua - a semantically enabled environmental monitoring. It shows a few tools and the semantic methodology and opens discussion for LOD and team science
This document discusses big data trends and concepts. It notes that the cost of data storage has dropped and social media has grown exponentially. Unstructured data from sources like social media is increasing. Big data has potential for new insights but requires new database technologies to handle structured and unstructured data. Advanced quantitative methods like machine learning, data mining, and predictive analytics can generate new insights from big data. However, more data does not always lead to better results and small, targeted data may perform better than big data in some cases like economics forecasting where theories are not well understood.
The document discusses how GIS can help address challenges facing the world such as population growth, resource shortages, and climate change. It argues that GIS provides a framework for understanding the earth through geographic knowledge, analysis, and visualization. GIS tools allow for collaboration and integration across domains to support better decision making in areas like natural resource management, transportation, and land use planning. The document outlines how GIS is being applied worldwide and proposes establishing standards, prioritizing data collection, and training to implement an effective GIS system at the state level.
The digital universe is booming, especially metadata and user-generated data. This raises strong challenges in order to identify the relevant portions of data which are relevant for a particular problem and to deal with the lifecycle of data. Finer grain problems include data evolution and the potential impact of change in the applications relying on the data, causing decay. The management of scientific data is especially sensitive to this. We present the Research Objects concept as the means to indentify and structure relevant data in scientific domains, addressing data as first-class citizens. We also identify and formally represent the main reasons for decay in this domain and propose methods and tools for their diagnosis and repair, based on provenance information. Finally, we discuss on the application of these concepts to the broader domain of the Web of Data: Data with a Purpose.
Publishing biodiversity: The interplay between Scratchpads and the new Biodiv...Dimitrios Koureas
Scratchpads are virtual research environments that allow researchers to collect, curate, analyze, and publish biodiversity data in a seamless workflow. They facilitate open access to digital data through standardized modular platforms that allow data sharing and interlinking. The new Biodiversity Data Journal will publish taxonomic treatments, checklists, keys, and datasets that have been generated using Scratchpads. This will integrate the processes of conducting research and publishing results within a single online environment.
In this talk I expanded on the human needs of geospatial solutions - including user design, productivity and digital vs analog tools. Providing food for thought on the 'what', 'why' and 'how' of GIS and spatial problem-solving, this talk was delivered on 6 December 2019 at the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Geography as part of the EEO and AGI Scotland seminar series.

Why You Should Replace Windows 11 with Nitrux Linux 3.5.0 for enhanced perfor...SOFTTECHHUB
The choice of an operating system plays a pivotal role in shaping our computing experience. For decades, Microsoft's Windows has dominated the market, offering a familiar and widely adopted platform for personal and professional use. However, as technological advancements continue to push the boundaries of innovation, alternative operating systems have emerged, challenging the status quo and offering users a fresh perspective on computing.
One such alternative that has garnered significant attention and acclaim is Nitrux Linux 3.5.0, a sleek, powerful, and user-friendly Linux distribution that promises to redefine the way we interact with our devices. With its focus on performance, security, and customization, Nitrux Linux presents a compelling case for those seeking to break free from the constraints of proprietary software and embrace the freedom and flexibility of open-source computing.
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
