GeoPackage is the modern alternative to formats like SDTS and Shapefile. At it’s core, GeoPackage is simply a SQLite database schema. If you know SQLite, you are close to knowing GeoPackage. Install Spatialite – the premiere spatial extention to SQLite – and you get all the performance of a spatial database along with the convenience of a file-based data set that can be emailed, shared on a USB drive or burned to a DVD.
A ‘context document’ specifies a fully configured service set which can be exchanged (with a consistent interpretation) among clients supporting the standard. The OGC Web Services Context Document (OWS Context) was created to allow a set of configured information resources (service set) to be passed between applications primarily as a collection of services. OWS Context is developed to support in-line content as well. The goal is to support use cases such as the distribution of search results, the exchange of a set of resources such as OGC Web Feature Service (WFS), Web Map Service (WMS), Web Map Tile Service (WMTS), Web Coverage Service (WCS) and others in a ‘common operating picture’. Additionally OWS Context can deliver a set of configured processing services (Web Processing Service (WPS)) parameters to allow the processing to be reproduced on different nodes.

The United States will be deploying 16,000 traffic speed monitoring sensors - 1 on every mile of US interstate in urban centers. These sensors update the speed, weather, and pavement conditions once per minute. MongoDB will collect and aggregate live sensor data feeds from roadways around the country, support real-time queries from cars on traffic conditions on their route as well as be the platform for real-time dashboards displaying traffic conditions and more complex analytical queries used to identify traffic trends. In this session, we’ll implement a few different data aggregation techniques to query and dashboard the metrics gathered from the US interstate.

2015 FOSS4G Track: Open Specifications for the Storage, Transport and Process...GIS in the Rockies
This talk presents an overview of some of the most important Open Specifications (OS) for the storage, transport and processing of geospatial data and why they matter for the development of the next generation of geospatial systems and data infrastructures. For applications that frequently access geographical data and rely on both speed and accuracy, both application and database design is crucial. In this presentation, we are going to focus on the database side. More specifically, we are going to evaluate three of the most popular open-source databases, MongoDB, Postgres, and Elastic against geospatial workloads. For each of these databases, we are going to examine the implementation and the performance of geo-queries. We are going to discuss best practices and design patterns for each database and try to find a winner among the three.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has activities relevant to the workshop scope of "the current state-of-the-art in satellite data interoperability”. This presentation will focus on two main topics with the option to discuss other relevant topics that the participants may wish to discuss, e.g., WFS3. The two focus areas of development: 1) Geospatial Datacubes and 2) Earth Observation Exploitation Platforms. 1) A Geospatial Datacube provides access to and analytics on analysis ready data (ARD) organized with coordinate axes of space and time with cells in the cube containing data of geospatial features, e.g., imagery. OGC members implementing geospatial datacubes are documenting common practices to spur development and leading to the possibility to federated geospatial datacubes. 2) OGC is forming a Earth Observation Exploitation Platform Domain Working Group with the goal of defining a standards-based framework for cloud-based access to and analysis of EO data. However, there is no widely used benchmark for evaluating geospatial RDF stores which takes into account recent advances to the state of the art in this area. In this paper, we develop a benchmark, called Geographica, which uses both real-world and synthetic data to test the offered functionality and the performance of some prominent geospatial RDF stores.

Abstract: Creating useful local context requires big data platforms and marketplaces. Contextual awareness is relevant to location based marketing, first responders, urban planners and many others. Location-aware mobile devices are revolutionizing how consumers and brands interact in the physical world. Situational awareness is a key element to efficiently handling any emergency response. In all cases, big data processing and high velocity streaming of location based data creates the richest contextual awareness. Data from many sources including IoT devices, sensor webs, surveillance and crowdsourcing are combined with semantically-rich urban and indoor data models. The resulting context information is delivered to and shared by mobile devices in connected and disconnected operations. Standards play a key role in establishing context platforms and marketplaces. Successful approaches will consolidate data from ubiquitous sensing technologies on a common space-time basis to enabled context-aware analysis of environmental and social dynamics.

Managing geospatial data has long been owned by relational database technology, but with recent advances in spatial indexing support in NoSQL databases, building spatially-aware apps with non-relational technologies is fast, performant and scalable. In this session we introduce spatial functionality in Apache Lucene and IBM Cloudant. Cloudant Geo supports Lucene spatial search as well as a more advanced geospatial search and indexing capability using GeoJSON documents, which allows for more types of spatial objects along with spatio-temporal indexing and query. To illustrate the powerful capabilities of the geospatial platform, we'll demonstrate a sample application called Field Work. This is a pure Javascript/HTML5 mobile app for utilities maintenance people to do remote work -- using the GeoJSON format to update the spatial layout of infrastructure such as pipes or meters, and even creating work orders -- whether online or offline.

Technologies that were once too complex and esoteric to be used by anyone outside of NASA or the military became standard offerings for the likes of Hotels.com and Foursquare, and are now being regularly deployed by even the smallest startups. Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

The system is built on PostGIS, Mapserver and custom PHP.
Like OGC standards, OpenPOIs is part of the public Internet infrastructure. OGC standards and OpenPOIs are platform, vendor and data neutral. The OGC's vision and mission, experience with legal and organizational issues involved in "openness", and rich connections to the world's providers and users of geospatial data and technology put the Consortium in a unique position to launch and host this resource.The potential societal benefits are broad and deep. Linked POI registries will support disaster management, public health, resource management, science, and more. Better geospatial standards are another benefit of this project. Current growth areas in Web-based computing are "RESTful" programming, linked data and the Semantic Web. OpenPOIs is designed to accommodate and leverage these developments. The Web and Semantic Web provide tools with which the POI vision can be achieved, and OpenPOIs provides the data. Existing OGC Web Services (OWS) standards have just begun to evolve to track these developments, and experience gained with the OpenPOIs Registry will help move the standards forward.
