2. History of Rock Definition: Hard edged music performed with electric guitars, bass and drums, and usually accompanied by lyrics sung by a vocalist. Chuck Berry is a pioneer rock artist, he was the original inventor of rock and roll in 1955. He was a black man playing black music, the music industry soon understood that there was a white market for black music and rock and roll blew up over night. (Elvis Presley)

3. The Early 60’s One of Chuck Berry’s followers was the Rolling Stones, they transitioned from single artists into musicians capable of producing albums of songs. 4. The 70’s Rock music split up into three “main” categories: Heavy metal: such as Led Zeppelin Hippie Bands: such as Pink Floyd Punk: such as The Clash A fourth type of rock was less recognized but took shape as well, Industrial rock, a type of rock that inspired future rock bands.

5. The 80’s As the 80’s began rock was losing commercial steam, its sound was growing stale. American bands such as R.E.M were dubbed as college rock because of their popularity on college radio stations By the end of the 80’s college rock had become known as alternative rock or indie rock because the bands were often signed to small, independently-owned labels. In 1988 Billboard created a new chart for rock

6. The 90’s Alternative rock became the dominant popular music (in the beginning of the decade) The death of Kurt Cobain caused alternative to lose its luster by the middle of the decade which set the stage for mainstream rock’s reemergence. One of the first bands to capitalize on mainstream rocks comeback was Limp Bizkit.

7. 21st Century The most successful acts in the 21st century possess the same spirit as their 60’s predecessors, even though they sound different. Linkin Park fuses hip-hop and metal, while 3- Doors-Down keeps hard-rock traditions of the past, while providing a contemporary spin. Rock music will keep evolving in the future, drawing from its rich history background.

9. Activites for Children Two activities to do in the classroom with rock music and your students. (geared toward 3rd grade students) 1.) Split the students into groups of 4 or 5, call the groups their “rock band” -have the children name their rock band, and have each individual member make an instrument for the band. -The students can use materials provided by the instructor.

10. Activities continued 2.) Split students into groups. Play different rock songs and while listening to the songs have the students in their groups identify the instruments they hear. -Also have them act out how each instrument they heard are played. -You could also play a rock video and mute it and just have them identify the instruments they see being played by the rock band.
