4.  It is also called spencer well`s artery forceps.
 It has a ratchet and two blades with uniform
serrations.
 It is used to control bleeding,not only from arteries
but also from the veins and capillaries.once the
bleeding point is caught,they are coagulated or
ligature is applied.hence the name haemostat.
 The curved artery forceps are commonly used.

7.  The smaller version of this is called mosquito forceps
 Mosquito forcep is extremely useful plastic surgery
operations
 It is also available as straight artery forceps which is
used to hold the stay sutures
 Also used to crush the appendicular base,
 To hold the hernial sac and to apply transfixation
ligature
 To hold fascia, aponeurosis, peritoneum etc

8.  It has ratchet and triangular expansion at the tip.curved
inwards with fine teeth at the tip of the instrument,blades
are straight
 It can be used to hold the tough structures such as fascia,
aponeurosis etc
 Even though it can cause trauma because if its better grip.
 It can be used to hold the duodenum for duodenal closure
during gastrectomy

10.  Commonly used in appendicectomy, thyroidectomy and
to hold the fascio aponeurotic layer during laprotomies.
 It is also used to catch the bladder neck during resection
of prostate.

11.  This is similar to artery forceps with serrations.
 It is available as curved and straight
 There is a sharp tooth at the tip of the instrument
.hence, it has a better grip.
 Kocher`s forceps can be used to hold tough structures
such as fascia etc.
 During thyroidectomy it is used to hold strap muscles
for dividing them.
 In gynecology it is used to clamp pedicles during
TAH

14.  In obstetrics it is used in artificial rupture of
membrane.

15. It is 22.5 cm long.
Sponge holding forcep has a ratchet and
two long blades.
Operating end is rounded with serrations.
Ratchet lock helps to secure grip on
holding the swab

the part with antiseptic agents at the time of
surgery.
 it can also be used as a blunt dissector with the

19. Also called Mayo`s scissor.
Tissue cutting scissor does not have
ratchets and operating end is sharp
Used to dissect tissue planes during
surgical operations and to cut or
divide important structures.
Also called golden hand scissor

21. It has a handle and 2 long blades.
No serrations.
Tip is sharp.
No ratchets.
It is used to cut the sutures or
knots.Hence,called as suture cutting
scissor

23.  Outer surface has groove to get a firm grip.
 Availabe as toothed forcep and also non-
toothed forceps
 These foreceps are very useful to pick
individual layer such as serosa,seromuscular
layers,mucosa etc during anastomosis.
 Forceps with fine teeth can be used to catch
bleeding points for coagulation points.

27.  This is a long instrument with a ratchet lock.
 The operation end has two small stout blades
with serrations.
 The instrument is used to hold the curved
needles which are used to suture the part.
 A firm grip is essential to apply proper
sutures.
 Generally needles are held at the junction of
2/3rd and 1/3rd so that it will allow a smooth
clockwise movement of hand which in turn
allow the needle to pass through needle.

31.  Popularly called as the surgeon`s knife.
 Used to incise the skin and subcutaneous
tissue.
 Surgical scalpels consists of two parts,a
blade and a handle.
 Scalpels may be single use(disposable) or
re-usable

33.  Cheatle`s forceps are long,mettalic forceps
with curved blade.
 Serations are present in the blades for a
better grip.
 The handle has no lock.
 Cheatle`s forcep is used to pick sterilized
articles like sponges,gauge pieces or other
instruments to transfer to the instrument
trolley.
 It has long blades the hands of a nurse or
assistant are well away from cleaning area.

35.  Short instrument,has a ratchets and catch.
 Operating end is sharp.
 Available in different sizes.average size is 4-5
inches in length.
 Once the part is cleaned and draped the clips
are used to hold the towels in place.
 Can also be used to fix suction tubes/cautery
cables etc to drapes.
 Can be used to hold ribs while elevating ribs
in chest injury.

38.  Long instrument with right angle at the
operating angle.
 Because it is long,dissections at deeper
planes can be done easily,as in isolation of
vagus(neck dissection and tonsillectomy).
 This instrument is extremely useful in
ligating the major vascular pedicles e,g
A. superior thyroid pedicle----thyroidectomy
B. Cystic artery------cholecystectomy
C. Left gastric artery and vein in gastrectomy
D. Ligating middle thyroid vein

40.  Scissors is bent at angle,to get below the
bandage easily.
 The tip of the lower blade is flat and blunt.

42.  To retract skin edges.
 To retract tough fascia.
 Used to retract small incisions.
 Superficial retraction of skin incisions during
laparotomy.

44.  Morris retractor is usually curved.
 Used to retract strong structures like
abdominal wall muscles and it gives wider
space to work e,g in gynae
 Long instrument with broad operating end
 Blade has a beaked end to give better hold
over retrating tissue.

46.  It has only one blade.
 Superficial retractor,can be used to retract
the layers of the abdominal wall,muscles etc
 Also used in thyroidectomy ,
appendicectomy.
 It is also used to retract the tissue whe space
available is less.
