Safe Haven

Everyone has the right to a life without abuse or the fear of living through violence circumstances on a daily basis. Safe Haven has been in operation since 1983, it is an organization that serve as a shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. In Mississippi this organization serves several counties such as Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Clay, Monroe, Choctaw, Webster, Attala, Montgomery, Calhoun and Chickasaw. The website, WomenShelter.org provides access to finding shelters for those who are in need of these facilities quickly. Shelters offer refuge to abuse victims, but they also operate Hotlines, which are there in most cases so that the victims can find the resources for help and even just to have someone to talk too. They offer shelter, and also they assist with transitional housing, family shelters for those who have children, residential treatments centers, with other residential services for women. Furthermore, Safe Haven shelters are located in many state worldwide (Safe Haven Columbus Ms - Domestic Violence Shelter, 2016).
Suppling a safe haven or place to the women and children in our communities from domestic violence and abuse should be the responsibility of every society and culture. Even through there are numerous shelters within our communities that offer victims of violence and abuse a place of safety, but there are large recorded fatalities of violence against women, and the numbers are enormously higher than that of men.
The number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2012 was recorded as 6,488, whereas the number of American women documented as murdered by current or ex male partners during the same time period was 11,766. This example shows there have been more fatalities in violence against women than that of military fatalities during the war. Statistics illustrates that 85 percent of domestic violence is women and around 15 percent will be men (Vagianos, 2014).
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence accounts the role of the victim and the fact that they must find alternate living arrangements as fast as possible, which could offer the protection needed against their abusers. We understand that domestic violence is the essence of willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other forms of abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control that is perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. This could include physical or sexual violence, and also psychological and emotional abuse. The regularity and harshness of the abuse can differ significantly, but nevertheless the one constant component of domestic violence or abuse is one partner’s unfailing efforts to maintain power and dominates over the other partner (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2016).

Selected Article
The article that I’ve selected in relation to the topic of women in society it titled, “The Role of Women in Society: from Preindustrial to Modern Times.” The article discussed the role of the women in agriculture and distinguished based upon ethnicity. During the preindustrial period, majority of the agriculture work was done by women, although dominated by men. The article centered the women’s role based upon different cultures and marital status. Once the plough was invented, women’s input dwindled or ceased. In modern times, countries with a tradition of plough use, women are less likely to participate in the labor market, are less likely to own firms, and are less likely to participate in national politics.
Feminist Theory
The feminist theory I selected is liberal feminism. According to Robbins, S. P., Chatterjee, P., & Canda, E. R. (2012) liberal feminism refers to women being basically the same as men and therefore should have equal rights to men. The focus of the theory is for women’s rights to control their own bodies through sexual education and contraception, in relation to abortion rights. This theory relates to social work practice due to the profession being majority women. Due to being a woman dominated field, it shows that women can be in a leadership position as a man could. This feminist theory hasn’t really influenced my understanding of women’s role in society, but rather confirmed my thought process. Often times we hear how men make more money than men, although they can do the same job and this theory opposes that.
The Bradley Case
The Bradley case better references radical feminism rather than my choice of liberal. Radical feminism focuses on issues of violence against women, including sexual harassment, rape, battering, and prostitution.
My views of women’s roles inform my next steps with Tiffani due to teaching/assisting her with the liberal theory. The case ended with Tiffani overcoming her urge to see Donald, attaining her GED and planning to attend college. Due to such improvement, I would continue to uplift Tiffani and encourage her to be the best she could be. Continue with college and obtain a degree in the study that interests her. Even finding part-time employment while attending college to keep her occupied.

2. Gender Sensitization refers to theories which claim
that modification of the behavior of teachers and
parents (etc.) towards children can have a causal
effect on gender equality.
The dictionary meaning of gender is – the class in
which a noun or pronoun is placed in grammatical
grouping.
3. The aim of gender sensitization is to make
people aware of the power relations between
men and women in society and to understand
the importance of affording women and men
equally opportunities and treatment.
4. Gender equality should be a priority not only in the
organization’s mission statement, general objectives,
and policies, but also in its internal regulations
(recruitment procedures, terms and conditions for
workers, etc).
Adequate resources should be devoted to putting
such policies into practice.
Management-staff relations should be as non-
vertical as possible: open, consultative, listening.
5. There should be greater parity in numbers and
distribution of staff, more – importantly, women on
the staff and especially in management must be
committed to gender equality.
This means not feminine management, but feminist
management, understood as management (by both
sexes) that is committed to women’s empowerment.
The organization should offer non-gender-
stereotyped roles and choices for both men and
women.
There should be space for, and encouragement of,
bottom-up initiatives and informal, ‘horizontal’ for
ideas and dialogue.
6. Decision-making access for women should be built into
the organization’s structures, not dependent on
informal agreements or arrangements, so that
women’s access to decision-making does not depend on
the personalities and efforts of individuals.
Management should give unequivocal support to gender
teams and staff members with specific responsibility
for gender issues.
There should be scope for different organizational
styles and cultures to coexist and be valued and for
men and women together to explore and utilize
difference without disempowering either side.
9. Sexual harassment is rampant extremely
widespread. It touches the lives of 40 to 60
percent of working women, and similar
proportions of female students in colleges and
universities.
11. It will not. Generally, simply ignoring
sexual harassment will not stop it. Ignoring
such behavior may be taken as a sign of
encouragement or tacit consent. Many
reports, that when they directly tell the
harasser to stop, the harassment often,
but not always ends. Ignoring such conduct
may even be perceived as complicity,
condoling and encouragement of the act.
12. Women enjoy attention from the other sex and
when they can’t handle they complain of sexual
harassment.
13. Display of “Power” on the part of perpetrator
is the root cause of Sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment is form of harassment-
which is unwanted and unacceptable to the
victim. A.P. survey (Women Police Officers)
86% of Sexual harassment are true. In fact
most cases of Sexual Harassment go
unreported as
a) 48.2 % - embarrassed.
b) Fear of being blamed.
14. Many women make up and report stories of
sexual harassment to get back at their
employers or others who have angered them.
15. Research shows that less than one percent of
the complaints are false. Women rarely file
complaints even when they are justified in doing
so.
17. Sexual harassment is offensive, frightening and
insulting to women. It has an adverse effect on
their mental and physical health.
18. Women usually keep quiet out of fear, to
protect the family honor, for children’s sake or
she thinks she is at fault.
Many women think it is all normal and inevitable.
It is a woman’s lot and there is seemingly little
she can do to escape her lot.
19. UN declaration, 1993, on elimination of
violence against women defines violence as :
Any gender based violence that results or is
likely to result in physical, sexual or
psychological harm or suffering to women.
Includes threats of such acts, coercion or
arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether
occurring in public or private.
20. A form of gender violence which is now defined as
sexual harassment.
“Before sexual harassment was given a name women
just called it “life”.
Lyn Farley’s 1978 book, Sexual Shakedown,
introduced the term.
Further reinforced when in 1979, Catherine
MacKinnon published, The sexual harassment of the
working women
