Online lube oil debris monitoring is an effective system for early detection of bearing damage in aero-derivative gas turbines. It identifies damage at the earliest possible stage by continuously monitoring the lube oil for debris. This allows operators to plan maintenance before damage worsens. In a case study, the system detected initial bearing damage in a GE LM2500 turbine and tracked its progression. Operators were able to schedule repairs and avoid secondary damage or unplanned downtime. Reliable early detection of damage from oil debris monitoring minimizes costs from lost production and repairs compared to detecting damage through vibration monitoring alone.
