This document summarizes research into using gaze-contingent depth of field (DOF) in stereo displays to improve depth perception. An experiment was conducted with 18 participants who viewed 3 scenes under 4 conditions: no DOF/stereo, DOF only, stereo only, and DOF with stereo. Participants rated depth perception, viewing comfort, and image quality. Results showed that DOF with stereo best enhanced depth perception but did not improve comfort due to perceptible blur. Image quality had a strong impact on all ratings. Future work should consider scene type, task, individual tuning, and methods to minimize blur and latency.
