Singapore’s BCA and Gates
Ecosystem to upgrade Cochin city
T K Devasia (devasia@khaleejtimes.com) / 30 April 2014
A high level delegation from International Development Division of the BCA visited the
city and offered its ‘gamechanging’ technology to build a friendly and sustainable
environment in Cochin that has many similarities with Singapore.
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of government of Singapore has agreed to partner
with development agencies and industry in Kerala to elevate the port city of Cochin to a global city.
A high level delegation from International Development Division of the BCA visited the city and
offered its ‘game-changing’ technology to build a friendly and sustainable environment in Cochin
that has many similarities with Singapore.
The agency has joined hands with Gates Ecosystem, a platform created by returning Non-resident
Indians (NRIs), to identify the right kind of opportunities that BCA and other Singapore companies
can partner with in the city.
The Gates Ecosystem, initiated by prominent NRIs in the Middle East with the aim of pooling their
resources, knowledge, expertise and vision for the development of the state, will act as a catalyst in
the transformation of the city in a harmonious setting.
The BCA delegation led by executive manager Zeng Han Jun held extensive interactions with Gates
executives and office bearers of the Cochin Corporation and Greater Cochin Development Authority
and explored areas of cooperation during their two-day visit of the city last week.
A Gates delegation will visit Singapore in June this year to take the discussions to the next level, said
Balagopal Valiyath, director of the Gates Ecosystem. He told Khaleej Times that the BCA had
expressed keen interest in associating with the development of IT parks, incubation hubs,
transportation facilities, centres of excellence and a global finance resource centre.
The delegation also expressed willingness to associate with the ‘New Township’ project proposed by
the Cochin Corporation during their talks with Mayor Tony Chammany. The township project
envisages developing an international resident hub, with all modern facilities including business
centres, schools, hospitals, shopping malls and parks within the township.
The delegation also discussed the possibility of participating in an IT hub project mooted by Gates
Ecosystem. The hub is proposed as a self-sustained integrated township with all supporting
infrastructure like residential, educational, hospitality, healthcare and recreation within walking
distance.
It was mutually agreed that BCA participating in this model township would pave the way for many
of the Singapore companies also to participate in the GATES project as well as several other
emerging opportunities in Cochin.
The BCA delegates expressed the hope that these projects would help Cochin develop into a city of
international standards. The meeting also discussed the opportunity of developing bilateral
relationship between the businesses in Singapore and Cochin, through the Gates Ecosystem.
