Presentaion is about GDI system and how its functioning can meet Euro 6 emission norms as well as customer requirement for better fuel economy for the longer runs.

4. § Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is certainly not new.
§ The first known application of this technology was introduced in
1925 in a Hesselman engine for airplanes.
§ Cars starting using it in the 50’s with the Mercedes Benz Gullwing
(1953) having this technology.
§ Uses a COMMON RAIL- INJECTORS
§ deliver fuel directly into the
combustion chamber sometimes
on the intake stroke and sometimes
on the compression stroke.

5. COMBUSTION MODES:
1. ULTRA-LEAN BURN, (40:1 or even higher)
At lower speeds, the mixture is injected at the end
of the compression stroke for lowest heat losses. This
is when the compression ratio in the cylinders is
maximum
2. STOICHIOMETRIC (14.7:1),
injected during the intake stroke for optimum
combustion and minimum waste gases during
moderate city driving conditions.
3. FULL POWER OUTPUT
Fuel is injected in the intake stroke at a higher .This
is done at high speeds or high load conditions like
climbing a hill.

6. GDI engines is implemented with the two basic charge modes:
STRATIFIED CHARGE
HOMOGENEOUS CHARGE.

7. § GDI is Ideal for implementation of Turbocharger- fuel injection is operated by ECU
§ Turbocharger comprises of TURBINE COUPLED COMPRESSOR.
§ Downsizing can be easily achieved by TC, without compromising with Power output.

of the actuators
§ Run the engine under optimal conditions based on

12. HIGH PRESSURE INJECTOR
§ The compact, lightweight,
and high-response injector is designed
for direct injection gasoline engines.
§ Fuel is sprayed at high pressure (20MPa)
through a nozzle with many tiny holes.
§ Atomized fuel is sprayed to optimize
combustion in the engine.
§ A magnetic circuit is optimized to control
fuel injection volume with high precision
and achieve high response
§ The number of components is minimized
to make the injector compact and
lightweight

13. § Ignition performance is determined by the
flame-out action (action in which the
electrodes sap the thermal energy of the
flame kernel).
§ The smaller the contact area between the
flame kerneland the electrodes, the smaller
the flame-out action and the higher the
ignition performance.

attention over the last few years as a way to significantly improver fuel
efficiency and to meet current Euro Emission norms.
o Further evolution of GDI is possible by Implementation of various Sensors
and Actuators , to meet the future emission norms.
