Frida Kahlo was a Mexican surrealist artist who painted many portraits,
self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico.
Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyocoan, Mexico City, Mexico. She
was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother
of Spanish and Mexican-Indian descent.
She was left disabled by polio as a child, and at the age of eighteen was
seriously injured in a traffic accident, which so seriously injured her that she
had to undergo more than 30 medical operations in her lifetime. During her
slow recovery she began to paint.
In 1927 Frida joined the Mexican Communist Party. Through the Party she met the
celebrated muralist Diego Rivera and they got married in 1928. They had one of the art
world’s great and greatly troubled marriages.
During her lifetime, Frida painted the diary of her life. She produced 151
paintings, 55 of which are self-portraits.
“I paint myself because I am so often
alone and because I am the subject I
know best.” - Frida Kahlo
Kahlo's first self-portrait
was “Self-Portrait in a
Velvet Dress” in 1926.
In her second-self portrait,
“Time Flies” painted in
1929, Kahlo used a folk
style and vibrant colors.
“The Bus” (El Autobus). Painted in 1929, four years after a bus
accident that left her permanently damaged. It appears to be a
simple painting of a cross section of Mexican society.
“Frida and Diego Rivera”.
Painted in 1931, as a wedding
portrait. In this painting of her
and Diego, she recorded the up
and downs of her marriage.
“The Two Fridas”. Painted in 1939 during a time when Kahlo was divorced
from her husband Diego Rivera, the artist portrays two sides of herself.
This painting, “Self-Portrait with Thorn
Necklace and Hummingbird”, was painted
by Frida Kahlo in 1940. It is considered to
be the most famous self-portrait by Frida.
“Diego on my Mind”. Painted in 1940, Kahlo and Rivera reconciled and
remarried after their short separation.
“Without Hope”. This painting was painted in 1945, when Frida Kahlo was forced to
be fed by prescription of her doctor. In the back of this painting Frida Kahlo wrote down
the following explanation:
“Not the least hope remains to me...Everything move in time with what the belly
contains. ”
“The Little Deer”. Painted in 1946. In this painting she combines the
ancient Aztec symbol of the deer with the Eastern word “Carma” inscribed
on the painting.
