A quick guide to the basics of garment pattern making, including tools, techniques, and types of patterns used in apparel production. Great for students and industry beginners.
GARMENTS PATTERN
• Patternis a hard paper, which is made by following each individual
component for a style of garment or apparel.
• Actually, pattern is a template from which the parts of a garment
are traced onto fabric before being cut out and assembled.
• Separate patterns are made for each part of garments.

GRADING
Grading of pattern:Pattern grading is the scaling of a pattern to a
different size by incrementing important points of the pattern using an
algorithm in the clothing and. According to countries, pattern grading
includes USA's, EUR's, UK's, and CHN's. Generally, pattern grading
adjusts for people of different ages and genders.

Types of Pattern
Thepatterns used in garments industry are produced mainly in two
stages:-
•Block pattern
•Working Pattern/garments pattern
Block Pattern:- Block pattern or basic pattern means the actual
pattern which is fitted to a certain standard body structure, but
without any specific construction for enhancing beautification,
design or style.
Methods of patternmaking
Block patterns can be made in two ways.
I. Flat method
II. Modeling method
Flat method: In this method the pattern of different parts of
garments are made through technical drawing by manual or
computerized method. In this method, pattern making is possible
more rapidly.

Pattern making
Modeling method:It is a very old & widely used method. In this
method block fitted with the standard body measurement of dummy
is called toile. This toile is used in the body of the model and it is
made maintaining adjustment and balance with the body of the
model. Then, the toile is worn out from the body of dummy &
individual pattern is drawn on hard paper. It is very efficient but
higher time is required.

Working Pattern/ GarmentsPattern
Garments Pattern/Working Pattern:
•Garments patterns or working patterns are made based on
basic block.
•Each block pattern is kept on board paper and its copy is made
with the help of pencil. Then with the copy of this block pattern,
sewing allowance, trimming allowance etc. are added.
•For each part of a garment, separate working pattern or
garment pattern is made.
