Berberis (Mahonia) fremontii, known as Fremont's mahonia, is a woody shrub or small tree native to the southwestern United States. It grows 6-10 feet tall with blue-green, spiny-edged leaves and clusters of bright yellow flowers in spring followed by dark blue-purple berries. The shrub is drought tolerant once established and provides habitat and food for birds and pollinators. It is used in gardens as an attractive water-wise screen or hedge and its roots and bark were used medicinally by Native Americans.
