2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

4. For my dps Inspiration I have used this grand theft
auto 5 spread which by the looks of it, it looks fan
made but I like the look of it as the font and the
way the pictures are presented are Rockstar's
style they like to include coloured borders to show
the importance of the image I think this is good
for my audience as it looks good with the
magazine genre and it will intrigue fans into
buying the product however this could work well
with a star wars magazine as the pictures and the
fonts would work with my magazine I'm also a fan
of the layout as its neatly packed and the way its
set is intriguing

13. These are several of the images I have chosen for my
dominant image I like these as they are heavily Star wars
related which is suspected for a Star wars game but these
show Some of the main characters which is expected in
the game I'm thinking about using a emperor palatine
picture as my front cover as it looks legit and professional
and could really drag star wars fans in i will have to give
credit to the creator of this image for using it as I do not
own the rights. For my primary images I will take a picture
of the Battlefront 2 case and maybe the new Star Wars
Jedi fallen order front cover I will also possibly even show
someone playing the games. I will include a few sub
images about other games maybe red dead or Battlefield
5, as other gaming magazines tend to this which will be
going with codes and conventions. There are many legal
issues when using other creators content as its copyright
and this could result in legal action if you don’t have the
proper permission.

14. I believe that this layout will work for my magazine as it can be compared to my
sci fi genre of star wars as they can be lots of pros to this adding star wars
colours in as my magazine is heavily based on star wars
18. This is my first step after using the clone tool on Photoshop to blend in
the the ps4 case and the background of the cover I have done this
because I think it looks better with the background blending in into the
cover my next steps is take off the red sticker.
19. Here is my front cover attempt number 1 I have used a stroke tool on title to get the
title with the border I went for the look of lightsabers as my magazine is about star
wars
20. Here I have added my masthead and added a
stroke effect and inner glow to it again to give
the look of clashing lightsabers I gave them
precise colours blue and purple (Mace Windu and
ObiWans lightsaber colours as well as red for
DarthVader's/Emperor palpatines)
21. Here I added more sell lines using the
text tool and added a stroke to them
so they pop out and look appealing to
the eye this also looks more
professional on my magazine.
22. Again I have experimented with my front cover again I have
altered my sell lines by increasing the font size and
changing the colours to catch the viewers eye I have also
added the issue number and date to show the
professionalism of the magazine and to make it look more
appealing
23. Here I have experimented again but added the price on I
have done the price in dollars because believe it looks
better to the magazine many popular star wars
magazines are exclusive to the us. I have not added a
barcode as I am arguing that my barcode will be on the
back of the magazine as I believe its more appealing
having it o the back than placing one on the front
24. Here is my DPS experimentation here I have added my
review talking about the game I'm doing Jedi fallen order
and I have used the text tool and altered fro my title by
changing the colours to red and orange this is because the
lightsaber you can get is a orange one in the game you
fight sith lords which they use red lightsabers this again can
be appealing to star wars fans .
Here I took a u turn on the article because originally I as
going to be writing about star wars battlefront 2 but I
changed my mind as I believed that doing Jedi fallen order
would be more beneficial as it’s a more modern coming out
in November of 2019 where battlefront 2 came out in
November of 2017 I think that Jedi fallen is still very
relevant in a lot of Star Wars fans mind as some have just
started to play or some have just finished playing some
may be revisiting it after completing it once or twice
already .
25. Here is my 2nd experiment of the magazine cover I
have added a star destroyer from the star wars films
into my dps as I think it will look more interesting and
it matches with my article as my writing a review
about the new star wars game so I'm trying to relate
to my audience I achieved the star destroyer effect by
using the eraser tool to get rid of the transparent
background and the quick selection tool to make sure
I didn't miss many white spots around the edges.
26. Here is my dps I have added some gameplay pictures in
this is going with codes and conventions as many gaming
magazines include gameplay screenshots in this helps
harness potential buyers.
27. Here I have added a stroke to my picture of
boba and added a stroke on it and lowed the
opacity so its dim I have added the drop cap as
well this goes with codes and convention of a
dps as most dps have these it makes the
article look more professional I have added the
game case as this is generating more
28. I used the spot healing brush to remove the thumb however this impacted the
pegi 16 in the corner so this had to removed I also used the clone stamp to
remove the sticker outline on the right hand side and to also blend in the blue
banner where a sticker had previously been I used the clone tool to remove the
black box in the left hand side.
