This document describes a study that examined the effectiveness of a serious game for training surgical trainees to recognize and solve equipment-related problems during laparoscopic surgery. The study found that trainees who completed 2 sessions of the serious game were significantly better at solving equipment problems during a skills test compared to trainees in the control group. While problem recognition showed a trend of improvement for the game group, the difference was not statistically significant. Overall, the results provide preliminary evidence that a serious game may be a valid way to train surgeons in addressing equipment issues. However, the study was underpowered and had high loss to follow-up, so larger studies are still needed.
